So far every episode of The Mandalorian has been a delight. Episode 3 – The Sin – deals with the aftermath of Mando brining back his bounty to The Client (played by Werner Herzog). Despite the handsome payment Mando shows doubt. The Client senses this and warns the scientist with his small imperial cadre to hurry up the tests they want to run on the Yoda-species baby.

Meanwhile Mando (Pedro Pascal) check in with his coven. The bounty of Beskar steel he received allows the Armorer to make a new chestplate for him. But his fellow Mandalorians doubt his honor and the way he obtained the Beskar. It is the Armorer who reminds them all of their common ancestry.

Despite receiving another bounty from Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) Mando returns to the compound of The Client. In a daring assault he manages to rescue baby-Yoda and kill a fair amount of stormtroopers as well. However, the tracking device on baby-Yoda is reactivated and every bounty hunter in town chases after him. After being corned by Greef Mando is nearly overwhelmed until rescued by hos coven. In a final showdown with Greef Mando shoots him, but the Beskar still in Greef’s chest pocket saves him.

So far the story of The Mandalorian can hardly be said to be sophisticated, although there are plenty of hints at deeper themes. But it does not need to be. Mando may well be one of the coolest characters in Star Wars, along with Han and Chewie. And that is the point. The viewer enjoys watching Mando make dubious ethical decisions only to get himself into trouble when he regrets it. Mando can with ease move between the dark and the light-side. That, along with the Western theme. Because that is what The Mandalorian is, a Western with a Star Wars settings, means it perfectly fills the needs of the audience.

After 3 episodes I am wanting to see more of the universe of The Mandalorian. We know the story is set 3 years after the death of emperor Palpatine. In this episode it is mentioned that despite that the Empire is still conducting experiments – including on force sensitive Yoda-species babies. Rumor has it this will tie in with The Rise of Skywalker. But with just 5 more episodes to go I do believe the show needs to start moving. Considering Mando is now fleeing with baby Yoda I believe that will happen.

Next weeks episode will be directed by Bryce Dallas Howard. I am really looking forward to that episode as it will mean both father and daughter have directed in Star Wars for what I believe is the first time. So far we have yet to be introduced to characters played by Giancarlo Esposito, Ming-na Wen and Natalia Teena.
