Blade Runner 2049 International Trailer released by Sony

Ryan Gosling as officer K in Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049

Sony Pictures today released the first international trailer for Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s original dystopian movie. Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford (as Deckard) and a slew of supporting cast. The new trailer reveals quite a lot about the story for the sequel – a SPOILER alert is this warranted. Watch the trailer below.

Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard in Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049 is being directed by celebrated director Denis Villeneuve with movies Sicario, Arrival and the upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. The original Blade Runner was released in 1982 as an adaptation of Phillip K. Dicks novella ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?‘ The movie follows former police officer Rick Deckard as he is ordered to resume the hunt for artificial humans known as replicants that attempt to live amongst us. The sprawling neon lit Los Angeles mixed with the anguished atmosphere have made the movie a childhood favorite (along with Total Recall).

Jared Leto as Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049 is set 30 years after the original – the world is still a neon lit dystopia. Now officer K (Ryan Gosling) is tasked with hunting down replicants. The trailer below shows him receiving his orders from Lieutenant Joshi (played by Robin Wright). The trailer also clearly reveals that replicants manufacturer Niander Wallace (Jared Leto) is the antagonist who intends to build an army of artificial humans. Several interspersed shots show officer Ks relationship with a woman known as Joi (Ana de Armas).

October

Blade Runner 2049 is set for release on October 6th. It is telling that the movie has been rated R by the MPAA. This stands for violence, some sexuality, nudity, and language. I hope the sequel can live up tot he expectations. I actually feels that those expectations are low – the hype is not really there.
