Hunters
This April Syfy will release a new alien conspiracy series called Hunters. The show, a 13 episode crime drama sci-fi show is based on author Whitley Strieber’s novel Alien Hunter.
The series is written by Natalie Chaidez (12 Monkeys) and centers around the disappearance of a decorated Philadelphia cop’s wife. The cop, Flynn Carrol (Nathan Phillips) joins the Exo Terrorism Unit (ETU) to discover what happened. Before long Flynn discovers his partner Regan (Britne Oldford) is also an alien. Flynn will have to decide whether or nor this partnership will work. Also starring in the upcoming Syfy series is Julian McMahon (Childhood’s End) as deranged junkie and Hunter cell leader.
The trailer…
Syfy is thus releasing yet another show. After three space opera’s in just a few months (Dark Matter, Killjoys and The Expanse) the channel dares to release a alien conspiracy/invasion show. A genre that has been the graveyard for many past TV shows. At this moment it is difficult to judge where the emphasis will lie. Will it be light-banter with special effects or serious drama? From the trailer it seems like it will be a bit of everything. The show did remind me a little of V, the rebooted series from 2009. V only lasted for two seasons despite two established leading actresses: Elizabeth Mitchell and Morena Baccarin. With elements of a buddy cop movie Hunters’s best chance is to hedge it bets with the Fringe and X-files crowd.
Meanwhile 12 Monkeys will return for its second season on April 18th. Which means that after the 18th both shows will air on the same date for much of their duration. At this moment I am more eager to see the well established 12 Monkeys starring Aaron Stanford and Kirk Acevedo. Yet, you should never judge a show by its trailer or its pilot episode. Hunters will premiere on April 11.
