Sith lord unveils light saber - Star Wars VII Lightsaber

J.J. Abrams talks about Star Wars VII Lightsaber

One of the most talked about scenes from the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer was the new Sith ligthsaber. I dare say thanks to SciFiEmpire.net everybody got a high-resolution picture to pick their bone with. The controversy about the ligthsaber has hardly abated since the release of the trailer. Most think it is too gimmicky. After Episode 1 and 2 introduced new types of sabers it is hard to get around that argument. Many hope Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens will be an effort to move the franchise back to its roots. The question is why J.J. Abrams would even bother with such a distinctive design.

Director J.J. Abrams had the following to say to Collider about the new ligthsaber.

What’s been funny is, since the lightsaber’s come out, I cannot tell you how many contradictory emails I have received from people who have both defended it with unbelievably detailed graphics…I’ve gotten things that are nuts, and I’ve gotten people who’ve shown how it’ll kill you and how it doesn’t make any sense. It’s been the funniest thing to see the arguments that have developed over this thing.”

About the origins of the new saber he added this.

“It was a number of conversations (that led to the design). It was a sketch that became a whole thing and, you know, this was not done without a lot of conversation and it’s fun to see people have the conversation that we had, but in reverse.”

As for his progress on the new Star Wars movie, the director had the following to say.

“There are obviously an enormous amount of CG effects in the film, and I can’t wait for you to see the combination. But it was very important that we build as many sets as we could and that the film have a tangible, sort of authentic quality that you believed that these things were actually happening in a real space with real sunlight, if it was an exterior scene, or if we could build a big portion of a scene and not have anything be blue screen, do it where we could. It was a very important piece of work.”

The movie is still scheduled for a December 18th release. I think the controversy about the saber design won’t die down. It is a focal point for fans to state what they like and dislike about the franchise reboot. Meanwhile I have to apologize for adding to the confusion about the new ligthsaber. A few people have quoted me about the ‘hilted lightsaber’. Strictly speaking the added mini-sabers are cross guards intended the protect the users hands. The Sith ligthsaber is in fact more of a great sword.

Meanwhile in other news. Star Trek 3 is being written by Simon Pegg (yes for real) while J.J. Abrams will remain as Executive Producer. This was J.J. Abrams talks about Star Wars VII Lightsaber. Is the controversy regarding the ligthsaber affecting you at all? Or are you just patiently awaiting December 18th?
