Riddick 4: Furya starring Vin Diesel

Riddick 4: Furya starts production in 2020 – Katee Sackhoff onboard

Riddick 4: Furya starring Vin Diesel

It is hard to believe that it is almost 6 years since we last saw a Riddick movie on the big screen. It is also almost four years ago that I wrote a blog post announcing Riddick 4 Furya and a companion show called MERC CITY was in production. On the latter there has been no news – though with the streaming market still booming it may yet happen.

Instead a unofficial consensus is starting to build that a fourth movie is in pre-production. That will probably mean filming will start next year in 2020 with a tentative 2021 release date. Since 2000 when Pitch Black starring Vin Diesel started the Chronicles of Riddick franchise we have had a movie in 2004 and 2013. Each of the movies was written and directed by David Twohy. Meanwhile Vin Diesel has gone on to bigger things and is currently filming the latest iterations of The Fast and the Furious , Guardians of the Galaxy and Avatar.

Sadly the movies have never been big earners at the box office. Except for the first, which was a low-budget production that managed to double that in earnings. The last movie – Riddick – earned a handsome 100 million on a 40 million budget. I guess that is at least one reason for a studio to consider a fourth Riddick movie.

Riddick 4: Furya the return of Dahl

However, after 3 movies and plenty of tie-in media I do hope Riddick 4: Furya will bring something new. The last movie – Riddick (read my review here) – was basically a remake of the first with the sci-fi elements removed. One thing fans can look forward to is the return of Katee Sackhoff as mercenary sniper Dahl. Dahl worked for the Boss John’s merc gang tasked with hunting down Riddick. During the events of Pitch Black Boss John’s son William was killed. By the end of Riddick a truce was reached between Riddick and Boss John.

That leaves one storyline unfinished – Riddick’s search for his homeworld Furya. So far there have bene firm announcements regarding Riddick 4: Furya. The last confirmation was in July when Vin Diesel tweeted the script was complete. In the meantime Katee Sackhoff is set to return to The Flash and Star Wars Clone Wars. Also a second season of Another Life is in production – but that is not saying much as season 1 was at best a mixed tape of other Sci-Fi shows.
