Fantastic Four is back!
One of the last big summer blockbusters this year will be Fantastic Four. The superhero movie, starring Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Miles Teller and Micheal B. Jordan is based on the similarly named comic book series that started over 50 years ago. Normally I do not consider myself a big fan of the superhero genre. I enjoyed Spiderman starring Tobey Maguire but I ignored the reboot that came afterwards. Similarly I enjoyed Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy while I disliked the movies from the 80’s and 90’s. I prefer that my comic book movie has a decent amount of sci-fi or at least some grit. This new Fantastic Four movie ticks both boxes, but the real attraction is Kate Mara. Her performance as Zoe Barnes in House Of Cards puts her on the short list of actors and actresses I follow intensely. This Fantastic Four movie is what is known as an origin movie, it reveals how the four titular superheroes got their special powers and how they first formed a team together. The setup is thus similar to Batman Begins and Iron Man.
To avoid any confusion…Yes there was an Fantastic Four movie released some years back. This is the second Fantastic Four movie in a decade. The first, which is unrelated to this one and starred Jessica Alba. It received negative reviews even though it made an enormous profit. Now the franchise is rebooted. The movie is directed by Josh Trank whose only experience was the very successful movie Chronicle from 2012. Josh Trank had also been slated to direct a standalone Star Wars movie. However, a few weeks ago he announced he had moved away from such a project. Meanwhile the buzz surrounding Fantastic Four is slowly increasing. My guess is people weren’t pleased with The Avengers 2 and want another dose.
So what can we expect from Fantastic Four? As you may know each superhero has a special power. Richard Reeds / Mister Fantastic (Miles Teller) can stretch himself into any form possible. Johnny Storm / Human Torch (Micheal B. Jordan) is pretty much always on fire. Susan Storm / Invisible Woman (Kate Mara) is as you guessed it, sometimes invisible. Ben Grimm / The Thing (Jamie Bell) is made from stone and practically indestructible. Together they must deal with powers they were given by accident and attempt to defeat Doom (played by Toby Kebbell). The movie also stars Reg E. Cathey, another House of Cards alumni, as Dr. Storm. He is the father to both Storm members of Fantastic Four.
Below I have made an arrangement of trailer and TV spots you can watch. If these don’t convince you that Fantastic Four will be… well Fantastic than I don’t know what will.
The official trailer…
And here are four TV spots…
Fantastic Four is scheduled for release on August 7th. There may be some advanced screening the day before. Well, the night before…
