Ever since the end of Fringe in 2013 it has been quiet for Australian actress Anna Torv. She has starred in a few Australian productions but that’s it. A canceled TV show can have consequences but with her gravitas I hoped she would quickly star in another role. Now after almost 3 years she may get her break. Anna Torv is set to star in Mindhunter, a series produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron for Netflix. Torv will play a psychologist, possibly called Wendy, who joins a team of crack psychologist at the FBI that track down serial killers.
So what is Mindhunter all about. If we were to do a free association session some of you will bring up Manhunter, the Hannibal Lecter movie Manhunter from 1986, before Anthony Hopkins continued with the series in The Silence of the Lambs. Well you are on the right track. Mindhunter is based on the 1996 nonfiction book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. In the bestseller, Douglas recounts several of his biggest cases, including pursuits of infamous serial killers.
So Mindhunter could well be a true-crime thriller serial murder show produced and directed by David Fincher. After movies such as Zodiac, Gone Girl and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo I don’t think many of you need convincing this show is going to be brilliant. Quite frankly there is not a David Fincher movie that is not very good, including Alien 3. His TV credits are nothing to sneeze at either, House of Cards season 4 was just released before the weekend. I admit that binging on that may have prevented me from writing an article or two for those faithful readers.
The inclusion of Charlize Theron as producer may come as a surprise to some readers. I was wondering why she wouldn’t star in the series herself. However, the Fury Road actress does have a very busy schedule for the next two years with movies such as The Huntsman: Winter War and Fast 8. These roles are besides her busy schedule as a producer. Perhaps Charlize will have a recurring role, we shall see.
Stay tuned for more on Mindhunter.
