Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv)

So far season 4 of Fringe hasn’t been all that captivating. It has been OK in a time when just being OK isn’t really good enough. Last weeks ratings of Fringe once again dipped under the three million mark with a viewer rating of 2.99 million.

This weeks episode of Fringe is entitled ’The end of all things’ and is focused on the mythology. In some respects I am becoming rather tired with the mythology, it isn’t as captivating as it once was, the mystery is kind of gone.

Well, lets give this episode at least the benefit of the doubt.

Here is the press release…

Fringe - A Better Human Being - Olivia Dunham being tested

‘A Better Human Being’ is a very character driven episode of Fringe, after a season where this kind of story telling alternated with action-scenes it is pleasant to finally see progression in the characters.

The relationship between Olivia and Peter is the main driving force behind the character development but it certainly also affects Walter Bishop, his character is a lot more focused in this episode and even chastises Peter for what he believes to be a bad influence on Olivia.

There is of course and episode specific story arc, this week it is a Doctor Franks who has experimented with genetics by trying to invoke older dormant instincts in humans to create a better human being.

Fringe - A Better Human Being - Cast

The episode starts with three young men murdering a newspaper reported who was doing a story on Doctor Franks research. While the men are doing the deed a fourth is a patient at a mental hospital where he is later able to give a very precise description of the murder.

Walter later deduces after questioning the young man that he has a telepathic bond with the other men. Eventually Olivia and Peter locate doctor Franks who admits he experimented with fertilized eggs which he later used on women in his IVF clinic. Franks suggests the three men murdered the reported to keep their existence a secret.

Fringe - Alternate Olivia And Peter

While Olivia and Peter are trying to find the three men to stop them from killing others Olivia is having frequent flashes about herself from the other timeline. Her memories of Peter also leads to awkward moments when she thinks she has a romantic relationship with Peter.

Walter tests Olivia and confirms she can’t tell the difference anymore between the two timelines, however he suggests that it may actually be Peter who is inducing these alternate memories into Olivia. When Olivia was younger and experimented upon in the cortexiphan trials she had the ability for great empathy. Walter suggests that Peter’s longing for the alternate Olivia is inducing the memories of her into Olivia. This leads to a confrontation between Walter and Peter.

Fringe - A Better Human Being - Olivia, Peter and Doctor Franks

After the test is over Peter and Olivia resume their search for the telepathic young men that eventually leads them to a garage similar to the one seen the pilot of Fringe which exploded and killed Olivia’s partner. Olivia says the explosive used was Semtex but Peter did not know this, Peter suggests that Walter’s theory cannot possible be true because Peter could not have induced that particular memory into Olivia.

Olivia meanwhile seems not bothered about the other memories she has gotten, if anything seems quite content.

While Olivia and Peter are investigating the garage Astrid is questioning the telepathic boy from the mental hospital, he suggest that the three men will next try to murder Doctor Franks as well as Olivia and Peter. Astrid warns Olivia but it is already too late for Doctor Franks. Astrid’s character is once again being underused after her episode two weeks ago, I had hoped it would lead her character being given more screen time but then again Fringe has never been brillaint with the secondary character such as Charlie, Nina Sharp, Lincoln and Broyles.

Walter Bishop - Fringe

Walter meanwhile also comes to the conclusion that his theory about Peter inducing the memory is wrong and discovers that Olivia’s bloodstream is full of cortexiphan. Agent Lincoln Lee and Walter demand from Nina Sharp to see Massive Dynamics remaining supply of the drug. Agent Lee grows suspicious after Nina Sharp initially refuses. Walter all the while continues his focused impression and as such has becomes almost a new character.

Olivia and Peter meanwhile are ambushed by the telepathic men at the garage but manage to arrest all three. As they head back home the stop for gas, there they profess their love for each other and agree to resume their relationship. Here is where their character development ends and where we ended during the last season. After their long kiss Olivia goes inside to use the restroom but disappears when Peter starts looking. The whole scene is actually awkward, the dialogue is tense and the lighting is purposefully bright and over exposed.

Fringe - A Better Human Being - Nina Sharp

Agent Lee, Nina Sharp and Walter Bishop have entered the Cortexiphan store-room, Nina assures that all the vials are there and this seems to be true. Agent Lee and Walter have their suspicions and the tension is palpable. Walter takes one of the vial and drinks the red liquid, he suggest it is merely a chemical potion mixed with red food colouring. Agent Lee gives Nina Sharp a stern look before the scene, what happens after will have to wait until next week.

Fringe - Cortexiphan vault

In a surprise twist we see that Olivia has indeed been kidnapped, as the camera pans around her we see another woman has also been kidnaped and is sitting opposite Olivia, it is none other than Nina Sharp. This suggests that the Nina Sharp that has drugged Olivia with cortexiphan during this season is a shapeshifter. This scene is going to lead to a considerable amount of fan speculation. My best bet is that alt-Nina is proxy for David Robert Jones.

The episode thus sees most character turn into a more serious version of themselves. Agent Lee and Walter in particular seem hell-bent on uncovering the mystery of the missing cortexiphan while Olivia and Peter are struggling with their feelings for each other. I thinks this is a theme we will see for a few more episodes to come.

Olivia Dunham played by Anna Torv

Like many Fringe episodes, this one is difficult to review. The premise of the episode is a mystery in the spirit of those found on The X-files that needs to be solved but the episode becomes less interesting when the mystery disappears and instead a familiar conclusion takes its place.

As for the story…

‘Welcome to Westfield’ starts of with a dream, one in which Olivia and Peter are making love and whisper to each other that they love each other. The surprise comes when the viewer discovers that this is not Peters dream from a life before the time shift but is the Olivia’s dream. It is an allusion to the fact that she seems to be remembering parts of her life from before Peter’s time shift.

Olivia Dunham wakes from her dream (Anna Torv)

Meanwhile Peter and Walter have found a way to interface with the time machine and now they only need Broyles’s permission to use the device. However, here the scene skips to the mystery of this episode. In true X-files style we see a 18-wheeler truck drive through the dark and rustic back-country of Vermont when suddenly everything goes ape. The electronics in this truck fails and the driver is forced of the road just like many others. As the drivers discus amongst each other the strange happenings a bright light suddenly appears in the sky. At first we are to be believed that it is a UFO in an homage to the X-files, upon closer inspection we discover that is an airliner that has just like the drivers of the truck and cars lost control making it crash in a field besides the road.

Fringe UFO or airliner

It is thus for our gang to discover what has happened, as they go through their paces at the crime scene we see Walter discovering the unique magnetic properties that have been left behind by the discharge earlier. He speculates what has happened but needs the flight data recorder from the downed aircraft and several bodies to draw a conclusion. Broyles says he will oblige, while they wait Walter suggests to Peter and Olivia that they go to the town of Westfield that is marked on a road sign which has a diner that serves excellent rhubarb pie. Peter and Olivia indulge in Walter’s food fetish and they take of to go to Westfield. Almost immediately upon arrival the viewer will notice that things are off, it is way too quiet even for a small town in the dead of night. Olivia states that she is intends to find a payphone and to contact Broyles as she can’t get any connection on her mobile phone. While Walter orders the rhubarb pie from the waiter in the diner Peter takes of to find the lavatory. As Walter talks to the waiter the viewer will notice that he is behaving weird and has strange eyes though Walter at first doesn’t notice it, after the pie on his plate magically disappears and the waiter suddenly becomes angry with him does Walter know something is amiss.

Walter fights the waiter

Meanwhile Olivia has found a payphone but it is inoperable, she does find a abandoned car that is still running which forces her to acknowledge that the town of Westfield is no ordinary place. She hurriedly makes her way back to the diner.

After Peter has finished using the lavatory he hears a groan coming from behind a door, opening it he discovers a man bleeding badly. For a brief moment the viewer is lead to believe the man is a zombie. Later on we learn the man’s name is Cliff.

Walter meanwhile has gotten into a full-blown argument with the waiter who states that he wont allow Walter to steal the pie just like Cliff wanted to do, then suddenly everything is as normal and the entire scene is replayed yet again with the waiter serving Walter coffee and rhubarb pie and yet again getting into an argument. This time the waiter pulls a knife and a struggle ensues with Walter, Peter comes to Walters rescue but has difficulty overpowering the man as well. The two aren’t safe until Olivia enters the diner and shoots the waiter dead.

After they briefly discuss the odd happenings in Westfield Peter shows the heavily wounded Cliff to Walter. Olivia finds another body behind the counter. Walter states that he can’t help Cliff and they must get him to a hospital. As they drive out of the town Cliff mumbles the words ‘Can’t leave town’, our gang soon discover what that means. After they drive passed the sign that says ‘Thank you for visiting Westfield’ they also drive passed the sign that says ‘Welcome to Westfield’. Apparently they are trapped in some sort of bubble that surrounds the town.

Olivia Dunham talks to Cliff

The four make their way to the Westfield police station where Walter manages to patch up cliff, the station is however abandoned. Cliff says that some people are holed up in a nearby highschool after the rest of the towns people became violent. They decide to make their way there. Meanwhile Olivia has more flashes from her life before the time shift and begins to wonder if she is starting to have the same delusions that Cliff says affected the people of Westfield. After the four reach the highschool does Walter and Peter deduce what is happening, apparently David Robert Jones has managed to use the rare ore found two episodes before to make a tear in the space between this universe and the alternate universe. That way every person in Westfield becomes infected with the alternate counterparts which explains their violent abnormal behaviour. Cliff is not affected because he has no counterpart in the alternate universe.

Welcome to Westfield - Walter and Olivia

As soon as Walter deduces the mystery of this episode things become less interesting as it reaches its end. Apparently Jones’s plot was to destroy the town in an experiment, Walter and Peter deduce that only at the very epicentre will they be safe from the effects of this gash in space-time. With the use of an old school bus do the survivors manage to reach the epicenter and thus survive Jones’s prototype device.

Broyles later explains that agents found devices with the rare ore surrounding the town and that it seems Jones was running a test of some sort.

In the last scene of the episode we see Olivia getting ready for a date, she pours a drink when her date sounds the doorbell. Upon opening the door we see it is Peter, he asks her what that nice smell is and she says it is their favorite cooking. Olivia kisses Peter and the startled Peter realizes that Olivia can’t tell the difference anymore between this reality and the one from before the time shift.

Welcome to Westfield - Walter Bishop

Conclusion…

This episode pays many homages to various horror thrillers, the first half of the episode works well in that regard though the second ‘daylight’ half is a lot less interesting. This is a flaw that seems to affect many Fringe episodes. The writers don’t seem to be able to keep viewers entertained for the full 45 minutes.

In an interview with website givememyremote.com executive producer Jeff Pinkner discusses tonight’s episode ‘Welcome to Westfield’, the love triangle between Olivia, Peter and Lincoln and the future of the series.

According to Pinkner tonight’s episode is most definitely not a ‘bottle show’ and fans will really like it (well that alright then).

As far as the love triangle goes Pinker admits that this Olivia is not the same Olivia from before the time shift and as for any relation between Peter and Olivia he said ‘there are bumps in the road’.

As for the future of the show Pinker says it has a loyal fan following that watches the show on DVR and as such Nielsen ratings aren’t the complete story, though he admits the show is in troubles waters.

This weeks episode of Fringe sees the return of David Robert Jones which raises the boiling point in a way that seems like he never left. The plot this time makes my head spin and frankly that is what I am looking for in a Fringe episode.

Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv)

As for the story…

Following from “Back to Where You’ve Never Been“, the alternate universe’s Olivia (Anna Torv) and Lincoln (Seth Gabel) track down David Robert Jones (Jared Harris) to a warehouse, unaware that Colonel Broyles (Lance Reddick) had alerted Jones to their arrival. Jones waits until Olivia and Lincoln arrive before destroying one of his beloved shapeshifters, warning that if he’s willing to destroy someone he loves, they should fear what he would do to anyone else. He asks to be taken to Fringe headquarters.

There, Peter (Joshua Jackson) and the prime universe’s Lincoln (Gabel), having been cleared to return to the prime universe, are present when Jones is escorted to an interrogation room. Peter recognizes Jones and offers to interrogate him; Peter is able to throw Jones off guard, revealing that he knows Jones had crossed over from the prime universe and that his scars showed he’d suffered injuries as a result of being teleported out of prison. Jones makes a demand for a hard drive, containing satellite tracking data, to be returned to him and to let him go or else his agents will launch terrorist attacks; this is demonstrated when one agent sets off a biochemical agent in a hospital ward, killing all inside.

David Robert Jones (Jared Harris) handing out money

They let Jones go after secretly fitting him with a tracking device. However, due to Broyles’ interference, Jones is able to elude the tracking system, leaving the prime version of Lincoln suspicious of a mole within Fringe. Peter and Astrid (Jasika Nicole) study the data from the hard drive, and identify that Jones appears to be looking for a mineral in appreciable quantities in a nearby quarry that, when processed correctly, can create a hole in the universes. Peter realizes too late that the maps are those of the prime universe; Jones has crossed back over with help of his shapeshifter agents there to access the quarry. Peter and Lincoln return to the prime universe to catch up to Jones, but arrive too late as Jones takes a load of the mineral back to the alternate universe. The two Fringe teams meet and agree they must work together to defeat Jones, even though they know that Jones has been ahead of them. Peter recognizes that he knows Jones from the alternate timeline and is a variable that Jones has not accounted for. Later, the viewer is shown that Jones is communicating with Nina Sharp (Blair Brown) of the prime universe, who is preparing an unnamed woman for “Phase Two” of their plan.

Fauxlivia (Anna Torv)

Meanwhile, Walternate (John Noble) and his wife Elizabeth (Orla Brady) discuss helping Peter. Elizabeth crosses to the prime universe to meet with Walter (Noble) and to gain his help to assist Peter, which he has been reluctant to do, believing he has been given no sign of absolution for taking Peter from her. Elizabeth assures him that she had forgiven him long ago. Walter returns to Peter that evening and offers Peter his help to return home.

Conclusion…

In many respects I shouldn’t be surprised that Jones works for Nina Sharp as he was an old Massive Dynamic Employee, but the question arises, which Nina Sharp does he work for. The production values on Fringe remain high despite the rather low ratings. The fact that many actors now have a dual role makes the plot all the more interesting and the acting has certainly not suffered under it.

Fringe Alternate and Prime Universe

Score; 8.5 / 10.

Viewer rating; 3.18 million. which is an increase of 300.000 over last week but a show of this calibre has to make at least 4.5 million to be sustainable.

Next friday’s episode of Fringe is entitled ’Enemy of My Enemy’ and sees the return of David Robert Jones (played by Jared Harris) who was the main antagonist in the first season. I hope his character will infuse some life into the series as the viewer ratings remain rock-bottom low. Last weeks episode had only 2.89 million on the Nielsen score as opposed to all time low of 2.88 for the episode before Christmas.

Here is the press release…

Fringe is Back! During the last two weeks my Fringe withdrawal symptoms have definitely started to show, this weeks return was also highly anticipated by fans and I guess we weren’t disappointed. Disappointing was however the news that Fringe wasn’t doing well in the ratings and as such won’t be back for a fifth season if things aren’t turned around by its creative staff.

As for this weeks episode of Fringe, its entitled ‘Back to where you’ve never been’ and sets story firmly back on its rails.

As for the story…

Peter fails to gain the support of the prime universe’s Walter in returning to his original timeline, so Peter schemes with Olivia and Lincoln to travel to the parallel universe so that Peter can ask Walternate for help. To avoid crossing over via the Machine Room, Lincoln retrieves Walter’s original dimension-crossing device, which in this timeline has been acquired by Massive Dynamic. The plan is for Lincoln to pose as the parallel universe’s Lincoln and bring Peter to Walternate. Peter does not learn until later that Olivia has told Lincoln to discover whether Walternate is behind the appearance of a new class of shapeshifters.

Olivia remains behind while Peter and Lincoln cross over at the Orpheum theater. Though Lincoln temporarily succeeds as posing as his doppelgänger, Lincoln and Peter’s real identities are soon discovered by the parallel universe’s version of Lincoln and Olivia (Fauxlivia), having been called off a case by Walternate himself. As Lincoln and Peter are being taken back to Fringe headquarters, the driver of their van divert from the convoy after receiving a call. Before Fauxlivia and Lincoln arrive, Peter shoots the driver and is able to get away, leaving the prime universe’s Lincoln to confront Fauxlivia and the other Lincoln. They lock up Lincoln in a closet as Olivia tries to convince alternate-Lincoln that Walternate’s actions are suspicious: Walternate had taken them off of a case involving these new shapeshifters, clearly a Fringe case. Olivia speculates that Walternate might be behind these new shapeshifters.

Fringe - Walter and Peter Bishop with a shapeshifter

Fringe - Walter and Peter Bishop with a shapeshifter

Peter travels to his mother Elizabeth’s home and convinces her to take him to Walternate. There, Walternate reveals that he had already known about Peter, as he had been “spying” on the prime universe. Peter explains that the prime universe does not trust Walternate, believing him to be responsible for the new shapeshifters. Walternate calls in his lead scientist, Brandon, to vouch for him, but surprises Peter by shocking and killing Brandon, revealing him to be a shapeshifter. Walternate is aware that these new shapeshifters have started to infiltrate his government, and requests for Peter to return to the prime universe to gain their trust on his behalf. Only then will Walternate help him return to his timeline.

Fauxlivia and Lincoln discover the location from where a phone call to one of the drivers was made, and get Broyles’ permission to investigate the source. After they depart, Broyles contacts David Robert Jones, and warns him of the arrival of Fauxlivia and Lincoln; Jones is shown to have several more shapeshifters ready for deployment.

In the prime universe, Olivia wakes up at the theater to find the Observer September sitting in one of the theater’s front rows, shot in the chest. September warns her that he has seen all possible futures, and all of them include Olivia’s death. The Observer disappears before she has a chance to help him or call for an ambulance.

Review…

The episode was both brilliant and disappointing at the same time, it was as though the creative staff held back in order not to confuse the viewers. The first half of the episode was slow and the latter half seemed to be about not confronting what the viewer must have already suspected about the translucent shapeshifters.

Fringe - Observer

Fringe - Observer

What this episode does do is make up for the near absence of the mirror universe from the first 7 episodes of this season, in some respects these 7 episodes might have been contracted into just 3 mythology episodes but as reader know Fringe is trying to appeal to a wider audience.

Again I must also complement Anna Torn on her excellent portrayal of both Olivia Dunham and her mirror character Fauxlivia, sometimes I just forget that they are both played by the same actress. If this series is not renewed for a new season than I believe she deserves something challenging.

Next weeks episode is called ’Enemy of my Enemy’ which is a rather suggestive title.

Score; 8 / 10.

Fear not, the title says ‘almost’ cancelled that doesn’t mean it hasn’t. At this time of the year there is always a lot of buzz going on which shows gets renewed and which get cancelled. At a press conference top Fox executives said that Fringe at the moment was a money loser and might get axed. However, they also said they will first engage the production staff to see if there is a way out. In the word of one Fox executive… ‘It is too early to start the mail campaign’. Various suggestions have been put forth but first they will also see how the slightly changed format for season 4 will play out with the rest of the season. An idea that resonated with various websites was that the series could continue with a format like Chuck, just a few episodes per season to keep things fresh.

Fringe will be back on the air next friday, stay tuned for the review of ‘Back to where you have never been’!

And now for the arguably suggestive still you have all been waiting for…

Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) wearing glasses

The first bunch of episodes of Fringe have so far been mixed, personally I didnt think they were that engaging and catered too much to larger audience with their simplified plots. Subsequently it came as no surprise that viewer ratings started to drop. If things couldn’t be made any worse baseball got in the way of the ordinary program schedule. Thus the midseason finale was bumped to january 13th and we were stuck with a not so ‘Cliffhanger’ episode. Fears are  that viewers will continue to tune out. Rumors that this will be Fringe’s finals season are common. I am willing to give it a shot, I hope FOX does as well…

In order to better promote the next episode we have been given a second promo, it sure as hell looks interesting…

And if that wasn’t enough another more mysterious promo has shown up that is supposed to act as an intro the rest of the season.
