Agents of SHIELD - Coulson being resurrected

Agents of SHIELD S1Ep11 ‘The Magical Place’ Review

Finally, after seeing agent Coulson die in the 2012 movie The Avengers viewers found out how me was resurrected. Strangely enough it didn’t really seem that it was the most important thing of the episode. Instead what Coulson saw as his betrayal by SHIELD for ruining his relationship as well as Nick Fury’s unethical decision to bring him back was far more at the forefront. Ultimately it came down to very advanced technology that allowed agent Coulson to be back, but the consequences are as of yet unknown. Agents of SHIELD may have dodged a bullet by bring Coulson back in what I think...

Almost Human - Simon Says - Karl Urban as Kennex with a collar bomb

Almost Human S1Ep7 ‘Simon Says’ Review

Almost Human is back from its holiday hiatus with the episode ‘Simon Says’. Despite it being a good show it sadly did not use a cliffhanger like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D to keep viewers returning. Instead Almost Human is still in standalone mode with each episode being a self-contained story arc. The story thus progresses only slowly with the focus laying particularly on the relationship between Dorian and Kennex. I suspect that shortly the focus will be places more on creating some sort of mythology with ‘The Syndicate’ acting as the principal villain, I guess we can be grateful the show...

15 minutes of Helix!

Up until a few days ago that wasn’t information available to give is us an impression of what Ronald D. Moore’s new show Helix was all about. We got a few screens, some snippets of teasers that just announce the air date and nothing else. However, die-hard Battlestar Galactica fans were convinced that even a show they new little about would be a success because of the man at the helm. After seeing the first 15 minutes of Helix’s pilot I can assure that when it comes to starting of a show on good footing this is about as good as it...

Almost Human - Karl Urban and Michael Ealy - www.scifiempire.net

Preview of 2014 Science-Fiction TV shows!

As the year 2013 has come to a close it is time to make up the balance and see what the year has meant for Science Fiction on TV. I will also be giving a preview of the Sci-Fi shows that will make their return or début during 2014. After a cursory view of the dates listed below you will also see that many shows will be back during the course of next week. I won’t be reviewing them all but I’ll cherry pick the best. Continuum 2013 saw the return of Simon Barry’s Continuum starring Rachel Nichols as time traveler Kiera...

Transcendence starring Johnny Depp – Preview and Trailer!

There are often themes for movies that are popular for a while for apparently no good reason. I think we weathered most of the zombie and vampire movies as well as the survival with a bow and arrow flicks. For 2014 and beyond human technology especially those to do with information technology, space exploration and genetic engineering are becoming the topic of choice. Not that I am complaining of course as this is a Science Fiction blog and I do take more than a passing interest in the Singularity. And so the future will brings us Transcendence, the directorial début of...

Enterprise Season 4 Blu-ray cover - Scott Bakula and Jolene Blalock

Enterprise Season 4 Blu-ray Preview and Trailer!

As Star Trek TNG learned us, all good things come to and end. So did Enterprise, after only four seasons. We have had the good fortune of seeing the first two season on Blu-ray. Early January season 3 will also be released. Today, we finally got the trailer for season 4, which is expected to be released on April 1st if you can believe that. I liked Enterprise, despite the flaws it inherited from TNG and Voyager. Though the series finale of Enterprise is something to be avoided if you don’t want to ruin the entire experience of the preceding four...

Person of Interest - Lethe - Finch going out into the field

Person Of Interest S3Ep11 Lethe Review!

During the preview of this weeks episode of PoI ‘Lethe’ I speculated that it would be a jumping board for the second half of the season. Oooh boy was I right. Sadly the episode ends on a major cliffhanger that won’t be answered until January 7th. ‘Lethe’ takes a while to get going, using old enemies such as ‘vigilance’ as a red-herring and not resolving the plot of Reese being AWOL. However, when the episode does get going it goes of like a rocket. It’s last moments unveils such a conundrum for Finch and Shaw that you would almost suspect one of...

Almost Human - Kennex, Dorian and DRN-494

Almost Human S1Ep6 Arrhythmia Review!

This weeks episode of Almost Human is entitled ‘Arrhythmia’. It deals with a blackmail operation undertaken by a group of people who have access to artificial hearts. As there are citizens who can’t get insured in the future they buy such a ‘second-hand’ heart on the black market. They must pay a regular fee or otherwise their heart will be made to stop. That is what happened in the opening scene to a man who couldn’t pay anymore. While investigation this unusual homicide Dorian and Kennex meet up with another DRN android that looks just like Dorian. Kennex is not pleased with this ride along...

Elementary - Internal Audit - Lucy Liu as Watson trench coat outfit

Elementary S2Ep11 ‘Internal Audit’ Review!

This episode of Elementary is slighted by several distractions to the storytelling and a watering down of Sherlock’s analytical procedures. As such this episode can probably be counted as one of the weakest of Elementary so far. It is saved by the return of Alfredo and the after-effects of last weeks shooting of Detective Bell. Internal Audit The episode starts with a Mr. Paul Hauser preparing himself to commit suicide. It quickly becomes evident from the TV news that he conducted a Ponzi scheme with his investment company. As his future seems to be rather bleak he puts his Walther PPK...

Edge of Tomorrow - Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt

Edge Of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise – Preview!

After last year’s Oblivion and War of the World a decade before you may start to think Tom Cruise is getting typecast as the middle-aged (ahemmm) anti-hero fighting off the alien horde against all odds. This time the movie is called ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, it is a reference to a time-loop that future soldier  Lt. Col. William “Bill” Cage (Tom Cruise) finds himself in when he fights the alien Mimics. Cage’s goal is to make use of this unfamiliar time loop to not get killed the next time he fights his battle with the aliens. Cage gets help from Special Forces...

Person of Interest - Lethe - Mr. Finch and Mr. Claypool

Person of Interest S3Ep11 ‘Lethe’ Preview!

Reshuffle After a three week hiatus Person Of Interest will be back for one more episode on December 17th before another Christmas hiatus that will last until January 7th. The upcoming episode is entitled ‘Lethe’ and is the first after the ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy that shook up the status quo. ‘Lethe’ will in particular deal with Finch’s youth and hopefully explain the events that led up to him building The Machine. We know from hints in the dialogue between Nathan Ingram and Finch that he is/was wanted for subversion. I get a sense that with explaining this background of events the show...

Agents of SHIELD - Coulson and May waiting for Mike Peterson

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D S1Ep10 ‘The Bridge’ Review

Continuity One thing that irritates me beyond measure on a lot of procedural shows such as Person of Interest, Elementary and Haven is that characters from a particular episode rarely return. PoI in particular has a gift for making characters interesting enough to care about in just 43 minutes. However, besides a handful we never see them back. Agents of SHIELD seems to take a similar stance but this week we are re-introduced to the protagonist/antagonist Mike Peterson from the shows Pilot. Mike as you may remember, tried to be a superhero but sadly came under the influence of Centipede...

Acting outlaws Calendar 2014 - Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff nude together

Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer get naked for 2014 Calendar

Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer are back for another Acting Outlaws charity calendar. With their ‘semi’-naked calendar they hope to raise funds for their Acting Outlaws charity which raises awareness for all sorts of social issues. One is the aftermath of the BP oil spill. Their preferred method of raising attention is through charity bike rides. Well, another year has past so lets summarize what the two sci-fi actresses have been up to. Katee Sackhoff has of course graced us with another season of Longmire in which she plays the rather towny sheriff’s deputy ‘Vic’ Moretti. Last August we also saw her in the latest...

Almost Human - Kennex (Karl Urban) questions why the chief witness would go for a walk

Almost Human S1Ep5 ‘Blood Brothers’ Review!

Who is a clone? Blood Brothers is an effective procedural whodunit. It established most of the pertinent facts quite early on, so in fact it was no big mystery that the antagonist Ethan Avery used clones to commit his crimes. The episode can thus focus more on unraveling the reason why he was clones in the first place and on stopping his schemes. This set-up allows ‘Blood Brothers’ to switch into a higher gear early on. Like many TV-shows these days Almost Human is a fast paced and tightly written shows that uses up its 43 minutes at a lightning pace. Though...

Almost Human - Blood Brothers - Karl Urban as Kennex

Almost Human S1Ep5 ‘Blood Brothers’ Preview!

Last week’s episode of Almost Human left me with mixed feelings. Watching the character of Rudy Lom (Mckenzie Crook) grow and take a more central role on the show was fun, along with the good dose of humor. However, the humor also undermined an episode that was focused on drugs and corruption within the police force. That combined with a few leaps that I thought went too far (such as Rudy cooking the drugs for the drug lord in under 2 minutes) made the episode feel weaker than it needed to be. At this moment four episodes have aired and it is becoming difficult to judge what kind of...

Elementary - Tremors - Lucy Liu as Joan Watson in court

Elementary S2ep10 ‘Tremors’ Review!

It has been a while since I have posted an Elementary review. To break my habit of posting reviews of Almost Human, Person of Interest and Sleepy Hollow I’ll try Elementary again as a one-off. If you think it is any good please leave a comment below. So far… Elementary is deep into its second season and so far it hasn’t disappointed at all. I have indicated before that I thought the storyline of Irene/Moriarty from season 1 was a bit weak. Season 2 has so far delved mostly into the personal background of Sherlock and Joan. Sherlock’s relationship with his...
