Disney releases The Force Awakens trailer, still no Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker!

The Force Awakens trailer released

Disney has finally released the full length trailer for The Force Awakens, the upcoming Star Wars movie that is so hot it needs to be touched with special asbestos gloves with little jawa’s printed on it. The buzz surrounding J.J. Abrams movie is reaching epic heights, not seen since the release of Episode 1 (one elephant out of the room). That said, actually very little about the story is known. The official trailer released this evening, last night for me in Europe, filled in a few gaps. The trailer seems to suggest a very story and character driven movie, that appears to be a mix of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. The trailer still lacks Mark Hamill as Jedi Luke Skywalker, fans are speculating that either his role may not be so big, or that he is already a Jedi ghost or J.J. Abrams is keeping some secrets to himself. Below you can view the trailer as posted by StarWars.com on Youtube. Do watch it in 1080p if you can. Star Wars The Force Awakens is scheduled for release on December 18th.

Analysis

So, Kylo Ren will finish what Darth Vader started. I am starting to wonder why Kylo wears a mask. Did he on purpose disfigure himself to be just like Darth Vader? And why is Kylo interested in Vader anyway? Sidious was more powerful (probably) even if Vader’s midichlorian’s were off the chart (second elephant out of room!). Anyway, what do we know about the Force Awakens?

From the small pieces fans have been able to gather over the last 3 months or so a shallow narrative has been built for The Force Awakens. The Rebels Alliance has become The Resistance while The Empire has become The First Order. Little is known about the apparent strengths of either side. It seems unlikely The First Order commands the same power as The Empire it replaces. Speculation has focused on it being comparable to the Imperial Remnant of The Expanded Universe. A related question is whether The Resistance is only active in First Order territory. Meanwhile the character details are slowly being established. John Boyega plays redeemed storm trooper Finn who is also force sensitive. His level if training in the Jedi arts remains uncertain. As Finn escapes from The First Order he meets scavenger Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, on the desert planet Jakku. Meanwhile The Empire, eegh The First Order has built a new super weapon (third time’s charm?). It’s Starkiller base is under the control by General Hux, player by Domhnall Gleeson. It looks as though the base is actually a converted planet. Hux’s master is Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis). Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) has been sent out to find Finn, whom presumably knows too much about Starkiller Base. How exactly Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) fits into this picture is unclear. Supposedly, the organization he belongs to, The Knights of Ren, are fascinated by Darth Vader. As Finn is force sentitive and is wielding a blue lightsaber the two will no doubt clash. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca will help Rey and Finn get off Jakku. Little is known about Mark Hamill’s role as Luke Skywalker. Just like Obi-Wan he appears to be a hermit Jedi. If there ever was a New Jedi Order established after the fall of the Empire is unclear. Due to the fact that Mark Hamill does not appear on the official poster (or the trailer!) for Star Wars The Force Awakens it has been speculated that his role is minor. Maybe he will pull a Yoda on us and only appear at the end, before becoming more important during the upcoming sequels.

PS, did you guys notice the Kubrick-esque shot of Captain Phasma and the Storm Troopers?
