Electronics Arts Battlefront 2 has gone into Early Access beta today (October 4th). For those who pre-ordered the game early one will have exclusive access to play several of the game modes. On Friday (Oct 6th) the game will go into Open Access beta. That will allow even those who have not purchased a copy to test the game -at least until Monday when the beta closes.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is the sequel to the 2015 game that received only a lukewarm response. The first game got good remarks for its graphics, but the number of game modes were limited. Star Wars fans have also been yearning for a good story, something the first game lacked. To top it off EA used a complicated payment system called Season Passes that quickly fragmented the player base when DLCs were introduced. Battlefront 2 is set to improve on all those aspects.
Single player campaign
This time there will be a single player campaign that is set in both the original trilogy universe as well as the sequel trilogy. The story will attempt to shed light on events between the destruction of the Death Star 2 in Return of the Jedi and events that occur in the upcoming movie -- The Last Jedi. The campaigns protagonist is actually an imperial officer, Iden Version, voiced by Janina Gavankar. To call her a protagonist is a bit of a misnomer if you consider events that took place in Inferno Squad.
In any event, those who have pre-ordered the game will get a number of exclusive in-game items such as skins, upgraded weapons and characters and early access in November. I can only hope that the upgraded weapons won’t break the game for those who have not tested the beta. Also note that game modes change during the beta, everyday a new mode is tested. For an impression of the beta check out the video below.
The full game is set for release on November 17th (14th for those who pre-ordered the premium version). Check back here in November for the full review.
