Star Trek TNG Season 7 Blu-Ray Trailer
Finally the last season of The Next Generation will get its Blu-Ray release. Ever since CBS home released a preview disk set of 4 TNG episodes in full HD in 2012 it has been a pleasure to rewatch the entire series. In my opinion the experience is drastically improved over the lackluster DVD release from years back. The special effects and the drama seem to contain a lot more impact with the remastered HD release. Now the journey is coming to an end. On December 2nd both the full season as well as a disc set containing just the series finale ‘All Good Things’ will be released. Previous seasons also got such sampler disc sets consisting of the best story arc but I do have my doubts whether anyone should buy it. After all, the full disc set for season 7 will retail for 90 dollars while the sampler retails for 20 dollars. And that 90 dollar price tag usually comes down pretty damned quickly. In fact season 6 retails for less than 60 dollars right now and that is without any kind of discount applied. Yet the full season disc set has 26 episodes while the sampler only 2.
Both disc sets will get a number of extra’s. At this moment it is not clear what the amount of new content will be. Previous TNG and Enterprise Blu-ray releases had only one or two new features while the rest came from the DVD release.

All Good Things…
For those unfamiliar with TNG and wondering whether the release would be worth the money let me give a bit of a preview of what you can expect. Most fans will readily agree that The Next Generation peaked during season 4 and 5. Afterwards a steady decline began to set in. This decline is not easily described as the TNG formula was honed to near perfection, but the creative staff started to take less risks. Season 7 is still a very good season though according to many the level of drama was way too high. There was still plenty of character development, but the background stories had already been fleshed out during previous seasons. So in many ways the characters felt too familiar. Some episodes such as ‘Lower Decks’ tried to counter this trend and as such is considered by fans to be one of the best of the series. ‘Lower Decks’ introduced numerous secondary characters but sadly we never saw them again afterwards. It was an effort that came too late during the series run. As season 7 straddled between high and lows it finally came to a series finale that lasted for two hours and is considered among the best sci-fi shown on TV. All Good Things ended the series where it started seven seasons back and even returned Denise Crosby as Lt. Tasha Yar who had been written out of the show during season 1. All Good Things like Lower Decks and several other episodes from season 5 and 6 gives us a glimpse of what the show could have accomplished had its creative staff tried a little harder. What is not known even among many fans is that originally there was supposed to be a 8th season. This was cancelled because costs were increasing and the choice was made to continue with Deep Space 9 and later Voyager. The series may have ended on a high note but many wonder what a 8th season would have accomplished. If you want to know what I picked up from this show that I remember most. What would be the following quote. “Don’t wait seven years to join the poker game”, meaning don’t hesitate to start with new things.
