Ghost in the Shell
Last week I posted the teaser trailer for The Ghost in the Shell, the live-action adaptation of the 1989 Cyberpunk manga by Masamune Shirow. That teaser was just 30 seconds long. Today Paramount and DreamWorks released the second full trailer for the movie. Ghost in the Shell stars Scarlett Johansson as the cyborg police enforcer The Major. Set in a future world were technology has run amok and special interests dominate. It is a typical depiction of the future as envisioned during the 1980’s. The movie is being directed by Rupert Sanders.
For those unfamiliar with the franchise can also check out the 1995 animated version. An adaptation that influenced The Wachowski’s and James Cameron. Much has been written about this adaptation’s focus on sexuality and gender identity. I am not certain what the goals are for Sander’s adaptation of the comic.
This second trailer shows a lot of the background story of Major, and I should warn anyone it contains a lot of spoilers. Personally I don’t enjoy such trailers, but I am sure plenty of secrets have been kept for the final release which is on March 31st. Amongst the reveals are 2 important characters. The first is the cyborg villain Kuze played by Michael Pitt. I use the word villain advisedly because his motives are not clear. What is clear is that he knows a lot more about the origins of Major than she does. The second character is Chief Aramaki played by Takeshi Kitano.
The cast further includes: Pilou Asbæk as Batou( (Major’s partner), Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouélet, Michael Pitt as Kuze and Adwoa Aboah as Lia. Ghost In The Shell is set for release on march 31st. Come back after the release for the full review her on SciFiEmpire.net
