Yesterday the first still image of the upcoming Dune movie was released. It quickly became clear that the picture featuring Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides was only the first. Vanity Fair today released an exclusive first look at the upcoming Dune movie directed by Denis Villeneuve. The article contains more still images of Dune 2020 featuring much of the cast as they will appear on-screen. I of course cannot and will not deny viewers an opportunity to view them here as well. The still images by themselves do not reveal anything major, but it does for the first time allow us to connect names with characters.
The accompanying article also details some changes the director made to the original source material. Lady Jessica, of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, is much more a warrior than a “space nun”. Liet Kynes is played by a woman – Sharon Duncan-Brewster – a decision I can get behind as it balances out the male oriented cast. Meanwhile we have yet to see the characters of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) and Reverend Mother Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling). And there is Dr. Yueh, Piter De Vries and Rabban.
The best time for a Dune 2020 teaser
For fans of the franchise, such as myself, the news could not come at a better moment. With the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic some had wondered if the release date for December was still feasible. Unlike movies such as Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow the Dune movie would no doubt still have a lot of post-production to complete. That said, with no major movie release scheduled until June there is no suitable vessel for a teaser trailer. I guess they will have to release it as is.
While this exclusive revelation will do much to get the buzz regarding the Dune movie going there have been some naysayers. Several articles, notably a recent one published on National Interest, are overly negative. While it is true that some Dune adaptations have bene troubled I think it is wholly wrong to say that the Dune movie could only succeed if John Williams made the score. I am assuming this is a reference to the idea that Star Wars without its soundtrack is not Star Wars. How this pertains to Dune I have no idea. The author of this particular article goes on a long tangent about technology in our civilizations future. Check out a recent video by Quinn that undermines the article quite effectively.
Stopping the negativity
Meanwhile there also been a number of personal attacks made in the direction of leads Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya. The former is criticized as being too old while the latter for not having acting skills. I think it would be near impossible to find a 15 to 17 year old with the right acting skills. As for Zendaya, I have seen her in a number of productions including Spiderman. I am pleased with her acting. I think we should remain hopeful and optimistic about Dune and not ruin the experience for ourselves and others.
That was it for the first still images of Dune 2020. I will leave you drooling over the beautiful still images. I think Dune will be the best movie of 2020. After all the others have finally been released that is. Meanwhile don’t forget to check out my dedicated Dune page in which I discuss the much larger franchise. These pages are currently actively being worked on so come back for updates! Dune 2020 will feature Timothee Chalemet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Javier Bardem and Stellan Skarsgard among others.
