Farscape movie in early stages of production!

In a surprising twist it was announced by Farscape creator Rockne O’Bannon at WonderCon that a Farscape movie is in the works. It appears however that the movie is still in the early stages of development. Rockne O’Bannon is of course also known for creating the TV-show Defiance which will have its second season air this summer. The original Farscape series ran from 1999 to 2003 for 4 seasons. Certainly the first season was noted for its poor special effects that reminded me a lot of early 90’s show such as The X-Files. Nonetheless the off-beat humor and the chemistry between Claudia Black and Ben Bowder made it memorable from day one. Sadly, one of the principal voice actors Jonathan Hardy who did the voice over for Dominar Rygel XVI died two years ago. The show was also concluded by its own miniseries Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars that aired in 2004. This is what O’Bannon had to say about the production so far…

“Yeah, yeah, it’s the worst kept secret,” O’Bannon said. “We’re far from production, but yeah, the first step is Justin [Monjo] working on a script for us. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.”

In my opinion Farscape does have the capability to entertain the audience similar to the way Firefly and Star Trek did. However, Farscape has been over for almost a decade and I fear that only its fans will really remember it. O’Bannon had the following to say about the plot…

“Set to follow the awesome comics written by our favorite Keith R.A. DeCandido, the film would follow John and Aeryn’s son, D’Argo (or Little D, as we will always refer to him). Because their baby was exhibiting a set of interesting powers that made him a magnet for galactic villains, we find that John and Aeryn hide their son on Earth to grow up. Now the kid is 19 and ready to go into space with his parents.”

To me it sounds a lot like the plot of the movie Splash starring Daryl Hannah. As such I remain doubtful about this projects chances, but we shall see. Hey, if Farscape can come back so can Firefly and Stargate…
