Netflix has released a new trailer for its upcoming Sci-Fi series Another Life. The series is set for a release on July 25th and will consist of 10 episodes. It stars Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica and Longmire) as well as Selma Blair (Cruel Intentions and Hellboy).
So what is Another Life all about? Well the official synopsis goes as follows “Another Life follows the story of an astronaut and a space crew, who are on a mission to investigate the origins of an alien artifact that mysteriously appeared on Earth. As the crew attempt to search for alien intelligence, they face inexplicable horrors that might signal the end of their mission.”
Another Life trailer
At first this description does not sound special. Honestly, there may have been over half-dozen movies and series before with the same setup. And so despite it being on Netflix and having a large budget and stellar cast Another Life will have to prove itself. For me, I will watch because it stars Starbuck / Vic Moretti. But will I watch every episode?
The characters
The group of characters that is sent into deep space is diverse. Katee will play Niko Breckinridge, the captain of the Salvare. She has just taken over the position from Ian Yerxa, so there is bound to be tension. Justin Chatwin plays Erik Wallace, husband of Niko, but who may well have how own agenda. Meanwhile Samuel Anderson plays William, the sentient A.I. onboard the Salvare. I thank god the creative staff did not use an acronym! Elizabeth Ludlow plays Cas, the second-in-command of the Salvare while Selma Blair plays Harper Glass. Harper is a media influencer (what we use to call reporter) and desperate to get a scoop.
And so Another Life has the necessary ingredients for a Sci-Fi drama, even if at first sight it is derivative. That said, the teaser trailer makes me worry for the show regarding a few aspects. The first is the level of drama, there is a lot of shouting and waking up of from nightmares. That is not my thing. When it comes to drama I am often frustrated by the stupid decisions made by characters. Secondly, I got a distinct The Arrival vibe, especially the shot of one of the characters inspecting what might be an alien artifact on Earth.
We will see on July 25th if the show manages to hold up to its promise. Will it be another The Expanse or Extant? Come back for the review soon after.
