Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) assimilated as Borg - The Best of Both Worlds - Star Trek The Next Generation

Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) assimilated as Borg

Finally the third season of Star Trek TNG has arrived on Blu-ray. Fans have been waiting for this season ever since the Blu-ray release scheme was initially announced. As despite the first two season having their moments in the sun it is the third season that finally allowed The Next Generation to mature. This was largely due to a change in the creative staff with people like Gene Roddenberry and Maurice Hurley being kicked to the curb and being replaced by Rick Berman and Michael Piller. It also saw the return of Gates McFadden as Doctor Crusher, though fans were sad to see Diana Muldaur go. In this review I shall discuss whether the season still holds up after almost 23 years and if it is worth buying.

The Next Generation season 3….

Fans generally agree that the third season of The Next Generation was a bit of a reboot for the series. A few of the shows creative staff were dropped and the emphasis was placed more on conflict, both on a personal and a galactic level. The advantage of all that is that the season feels polished, the disadvantage is that some of Gene Roddenberry’s principles were let go. The third season as such didn’t see any male and female crewmembers wear the unisex skirt uniform. Instead the show focused a little bit less on issues such as gender equality and started catering more to the adolescent youth market (boys) by showing a bit more skin in episodes such as ‘Captain’s holiday’ and ‘Ménage a Troi’. Some might say that the rot that ended Enterprise started with this season. Personally I think that is not true because both Voyager and Enterprise could have been changed for the better if there was the will power to do so. Season 3 for all intends and purposes feels like a better package,  a season that tried to squeeze the Star Trek concept to see what was possible!

Suggested episodes to cherry pick…

First I will discuss two personal favorites and then three that fans have come to form an agreement on.

Hollow Pursuits; this episode introduces the recurring character of Lt. Barclay played by Dwight Schultz. The episode was intended as a spoof of fans of Star Trek as the creative staff believed they were far too vested in their fictional world. The episode is memorable because it introduces the recurring character of Reginald Barclay, a man who is a genius but flawed on a personal level. Previously this type of character was confined to non-Enterprise characters. The episode id memorable for its mix of humor and drama but not for its special effects.

Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) taking command of the Enterprise-C - Yesterday's Enterprise - Star Trek The Next Generation

Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) taking command of the Enterprise-C

Captain’s Holiday; this Picard-centric episode takes place mostly on the planet Risa, known for its almost hedonistic attitude to comfort. Picard must battle aliens from the future while pursuing his archeology hobby. He also develops a romantic interest with Vash, a female bounty hunter. This episode developed the rule that all Picard-centric episodes are just brilliant!

Yesterday’s Enterprise; this episode sees the return of Denise Crosby as Tasha Yar when the Enterprise travels into a alternative universe in which the Federation is at war with the Klingons. Denise Crosby would later be able to play Sela due to this episode. Yesterday’s Enterprise also stands in contrast with its militaristic visuals which I think might have inspired the 2003 Battlestar Galactica remake.

Elizabeth Dennehy as Commander Shelby - The Best of Both Worlds - Star Trek The Next Generation

Elizabeth Dennehy as Commander Shelby

Sins of the Father; this episode continuous the story of Worf’s family disgrace that allowed the character to grow into a fan favorite during the fourth and fifth season. The episode is remarkable as it is the first to show the Klingon home-world. The season 2 episode ‘A Matter of Honor’ was confined to a Klingon ship. The storyline of Worf and his family’s past would later on be woven together with the return of Sela, the daughter of Tasha Yar, as a consequence of what happened in Yesterday’s Enterprise.

The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 (and Part 2); the season 3 finale is probably the best remembered episode of Star Trek. It certainly wasn’t afraid of pulling punches as is evident with Captain Picard being assimilated into the Borg Collective. Well, at least this time you will be spared the agony of a season cliffhanger as this disc also includes season 4′s opener The Best of Both Worlds Part 2!

Visuals.

I guess after reviewing the first season of Enterprise on Blu-ray I must have been spoiled because the return to the good old 4:3 aspect ratio certainly caught me by surprise. Despite the disappointing choice of ratio during this time in TV history the actual important aspects such as coloring, sharpness and special effects are nothing short of exquisite. The first two seasons of Star Trek TNG were good but with season 3 the show’s cinematography really diversified. At first I was reluctant to watch the first episode of the season, ‘Evolution’, as it is regarded to be mediocre. However, I found I actually liked it better, now that I could see all the facial expressions properly, thus giving viewers a broader impression of emotion. This sense of realism really carries season 3 into a new realm.

However, sometimes there are some artifacts or blurry faces that distract just a bit too often for them to be ignored. Also the HD transfer does make it often evident that were watching sets constructed in a studio. Similar criticism was recently directed at the first Hobbit movie because it used a higher frame rate. Here it is a question of too much realism.

Audio.

The audio of this transform is top-notch, though otherwise featureless. It is simple stereo sound as is custom from circa 1990. For the Blu-Ray transfer it has been recorded as DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1. Meaning it is as crisp as it can be but you wont be hearing the enterprise flying through your room from left to right.

Extra’s.

The box-set is completed with a long list of extra’s. As I mentioned in the Enterprise season 1 review, few people buy a Blu-ray/DVD box-set for the extra’s. I think that with internet and multitudes of wiki’s the information contained within these short docu’s is already known to most fans of the show. The most important documentaries are…

Mission Overview: Year Three; which discusses the third season of the TNG in general terms. Though there is some new material there is plenty of stuff used from old interviews that make it feel too much of a rehash.

Selected Crew Analysis: Year Three; this documentary talks about the changes to the characters in season 3. Despite the season doing more in this field than any other it too feels a bit superfluous as you can watch all the changes by viewing the episodes. It’s a bit of fluff to be honest.

Departmental Briefing, Year Three: Production; this documentary show what happened behind the scenes to make season 3 happen. It discusses anecdotes with the creative and production staff and thus gives us an overview of what it takes to make 26 episodes if Science fiction circa 1990. No easy task apparently. This documentary is by far the most interesting, but I wouldn’t buy a Blu-ray set for it to see it.

Overall, the extra’s are OK for someone who wants to know more about the background of Star Trek. Both for fans there is little new to peek their interests. The Blu-ray release contains a few extra’ not mentioned such as commentaries and crew logs, but they fall under the standard fare!

Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Risa

Conclusion.

For 77.99 (at the time of writing) you will really get one of the greatest sci-fi seasons of any TV show you can buy. The HD quality adds considerable depth to the acting and the viewer experience. Viewing the entire contents of the Blu-ray box set may seem superficially familiar yet I felt it was also something completely new. Unlike the two previous seasons there fewer ‘bad’ episodes and more ‘brilliant’ ones that make it so memorable. No word yet on when season 4 will be released but expect it to arrive sometime early July. Of course you can already watch two episodes. The first is the season opener Best of Both Worlds Part 2 found in this box set. The second is the episode Inner Light released as part of the Blu-Ray promotional release last year.

Score; 9.5 / 10. A very polished Star Trek outing, though some original TNG ideas were dropped.

Enterprise season 1 Blu-ray cast (Scott Bakula and Jolene Blalock) - scifiempire.net

It’s a bit of a slow news day. So all I got to offer is the Star Trek Enterprise Season 2 Blu-ray Cover. You can see it down below. As you may know the Blu-ray release for season one of Enterprise is just days away (26th of March) so Paramount Pictures thought it wise remember everyone that season 2 will also get a Blu-ray release. Followed by seasons 3 and 4 of course.

Personally I think the box-art for season 1 was better. www.Trekcore.com even complained about the fact that the promotion picture on the box was originally used during season 1. So far no release date for season 2 of Enterprise has been announced but expect it sometime early in the summer. With the release of Enterprise on Blu-ray interest in the show has been re-emerged among fans. Fans remain deeply divided though with many arguing the show should either never have aired or never been prematurely cancelled.

Don’t forget to surf back to www.SciFiEmpire.net late next week for the review of season 1 of Star Trek Enterprise. Star Trek The Next Generation is still on schedule for the release of its third season on Blu-ray on April 16th. Season 3 is of course popular among fans because the show really came into its own during this time. The season 3 finale ‘Best of Both Worlds’ will get a special release on Blu-ray along with the first episode of season 4 as they are fan favorites (according to Paramount).

Sins of the Father - Blu-ray - bridge crew - Star Trek TNG

Sins of the Father – bridge crew

Thanks to thetrekcollective.com for the scoop, it seems that season 3 of Star Trek TNG (The Next Generation) will arrive late April on Blu-ray. For most fans of the show that day can’t come soon enough as season 3 is generally regarded as the moment when the show really took off. Compared to season 1 and 2 it has relatively few duds and boosts the rather spectacular ‘Best of Both Worlds’ as it final episode. This episode will also get its own Blu-ray release which does have me scratching my head. Best of Both worlds is good but not that good either.

As for myself, well I am looking forward to the following episodes in HD (in no particular order).

1. Captain’s holiday.

2. Booby Trap.

3. Yesterday’s Enterprise.

4. Hollows Pursuits.

5. Ménage a Trois.

After season 2 I can already see the colors sparkle off the screen. As you may know season 2 was a difficult time as there were many strikes in Hollywood and as such some visuals were a bit underdone.

Here is the box-art for season 3.

As I have not posted anything on Star Trek novels lately like I used to I will give a brief summary of what has happened on this front.

***UPDATED***

Starfleet Academy The assassination GameHere is the cover of Starfleet Academy The Assassination Game.

***UPDATED***

Starfleet Academy The Assassination Game’.

First of all is the prospective release of the Young adult novel ‘Starfleet Academy The Assassination Game’ by Alan Gratz late June next month, I say prospective because even though it is highly expected by fans there has been no information on this book whatsoever. Meaning no new synopsis, front cover or interviews by the author. Which gives rise to fears that its release date has slipped. More on this topic during the coming month.

Star Trek: Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night

Star Trek: Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night.

Second bit of news is the release of the next Typhon Pact novel ‘Plagues of Night’ late this month followed by ‘Raise the Dawn’ next month, both novels will continue the storyline of TNG, DS9 and VOY characters as they for many months have little to do when authors don’t write Star Trek Novels. As for the synopsis and spoilers I would recommend other sites or just sit tight until the first novel is released.

Typhon Pact will return in September with ‘Brinkmanship’.

Star Trek Vanguard: Storming Heaven.

Recently the novel series Star Trek Vanguard concluded with ‘Storming Heaven’ written by David Mack, according to reviewers it was not as good as earlier iterations it was nonetheless a spectacular conclusions to this series. Pick it up if you want to know how Vanguard ends.

Star Trek Titan: Fallen Gods.

In July Star Trek Titan will return with ‘Fallen Gods’, sad to say I do not know what to expect, after the first two novels in the series I found it all rather too conventional. Perhaps I will give Fallen Gods a chance this summer.

Star Trek Cold Equations.

In November author David Mack will start of a new Trilogy entitled ‘Cold Equations’ which promises to bring three engrossing but highly individual stories. The novels are set in the TNG universe and will reportedly still have the Typhon Pact as a back story. Well I certainly can’t wait. It’s about time someone let in a bit of fresh air into TNG.

Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: Forgotten History.

Talking about time, last month the second book in Christopher L. Bennet’s series Department of Temporal Investigations (DTI) was released. The second book is entitled ‘Forgotten history’. I recently read the first one which I thought was a really thorough Star Trek work, the author certainly shows he masters all the series and their details. The novel was also provocative, it searched up new boundaries for Star Trek and in doing also proved quite mind bender.

Please stick around for the review of the second book in the DTI series.

Star Trek The Next Generation Blu-ray

After the spectacular sample disc in January we have all been waiting for the news on when the first season of TNG would be released. Finally we have gotten the date, it’s the 23rd of July. Which is still some time away unfortunately but at least it’s coming. Expect the second season to be released during the 4th quarter.

Alas there is one big problem, and that is the price tag. The retail price in the Uk is 50.99 which roughly translates to 80 dollars. That’s quite a whole in my wallet.

Expect a review of season 1 shortly after the release, until then stay tuned.

Deanna Troi wearing a skirt uniform

According to 8of5.blogspot.com David Mack is writing a new trilogy that will feature the characters from The Next Generation. The Trilogy is called ‘Cold Equations’ and will see its first novel released in october.

The details he described are taken out of the new issue of Star Trek Magazine and it contains the following brief description.

In Book I: The Persistence of Memory, Picard and the Enterprise crew try to stop the Typhon Pact from raising an army of androids. Book II: Silent Weapons sees the Enterprise crew race to avert the assassination of the Federation president – only to confront an even greater conspiracy. Finally, in Book III: The Body Electric, Picard and his crew must stop a massive sentient machine from unleashing a catastrophe that will exterminate all organic life in the galaxy.

Finally I have managed to get round writing a review on the Blu-ray sampler disk of the High-def transfer of Star Trek The Next Generation. This disk contains three episodes including the double episode Encounter at Farpoint, Sins of the Father and The Inner Light. The review of this disk is based on Encounter at Farpoint (the other two episodes will be reviewed during the coming week) and I must state that not only is the detail gorgeous but it puts the DVD transfer to shame (luckily I didn’t buy it).

Enterprise Blu-ray

This transfer makes the series look a decade younger than it is with special effects that hardly seem out-of-place today, the amazing level of detail just adds an entire new want to check the entire series when they are released on Blu-ray.

I certainly hope that DS9 will get the same treatment. Rumor has it that CBS digital is certainly considering it. For now we will see a two season a year release schedule for TNG, which isn’t too bad.

Enterprise bridge crew

Apart from all the little details of the sets and special effects that are uncovered there is still one other detail that comes out as never before, that of the acting on this series. Suddenly facial expression show a lot more emotion and with that the characters seem less wooden. I was especially amazed at Gates McFadden’s acting which was just amazing.

Already much described elsewhere I can also state that the vibrant colors makes this for a lot better viewing. The white-washed transfer of the DVD made that a more distant experience. Yet there are some dark coloured scenes such as during Q’s trial that are a slight blemish. For a moment I thought my TV screen had developed a fault but luckily the scene after that was alright.

Jean Luc Picard

Previously I had always considered Encounter at Farpoint to one of the lesser episodes though plenty of episodes from the first two seasons are worse, I accepted its flaws as a quirk of the time it was conceived and so I can overlook it’s often pretentious dialogue. That said this transfer makes Encounter at Farpoint a great deal better, its special effects makes this episode special.

I am not going into the story at this moment as most of you are already familiar with it but I will advice you to buy the sampler disk as season 1 won’t be released until the early summer at the earliest and you just have to experience this transfer if you’re a die-hard TNG fan.

Video quality; 9.5 / 10.

Audio quality; 9 / 10. A little uneven is the decibel level in some scenes.

Bonus features;

Season 1 Blu-ray trailer.

The Next Level trailer.

Ipadd APP Commercial.

These features can be seen on YouTube as well and so don’t add much to the disk though the LCARS menu app sounds very interesting.

Here are a series of stills made of episode Encounter at Farpoint. They include stills from famous scenes so you can compare them with the old transfer. Included are the Deanna Troi and Tasha Yar space cheerleader uniforms as I know they are a fan favorite.

PS; some brits have managed to use vouchers to get this sampler disk for as little as 4 pounds. Shop around to get it on the cheap, it certainly was worth 15 euro’s of my money.

Encounter at Farpoint - bridge crew.

Tomorrow the sampler disk of TNG will be released on Blu-ray, expect a review the day after. For now we will have to do with the first trailer of Season 1 which is to be released sometime this year (I expect in the spring), and I must say that the moving images look even better than the stills that have been released so far. The crispness is just awesome. From this trailer we can also deduce that CBS is making new bonus material to go with the disk. So far no word on any extended footage being included buzz there has been some buzz about including footage as a bonus (which is no-brainer as far as I am concerned).

Here is the trailer…

Little more than a week stands in the way of seeing what TNG looks like on Blu-ray disk, some early reviews have come out and are certainly positive. Now, to keep the ball rolling Paramount has released the box art for the first season which as of yet has no release date. The classic retro look of the box art is certainly to my taste. As bonus I have included three more screen caps from the sampler disk, one of each episode featured so you can get a better idea of the overall quality. To my surprise the quality of ‘Encounter at Farpoint’ is hardly any worse than the other two episodes.

I must say the bright colors of this new remastered edition is something to get used to, for 25 years we have watched a blurred, low-res and washed out edition of The Next Generation and this changes everything. It certainly gives me pause and think about another Star Trek TV-show.
