‘Proof’ is the seventh episode of Terra Nova which is produced by Steven Spielberg. So far the show has been a mixed blessing, the special effects are good but some of the plot elements are either too familiar or are simply not as enticing as other shows like ‘Lost’. However, slowly Terra Nova is starting to iron out the problems. As an example, the children of the Shannon family are becoming less of a burden on this show with their teenage angst but instead seem to have discovered their stride. They are at this moment mostly used to make the main characters (Taylor and the Shannon parents) connect to other characters.

Other plot elements such as the ‘Sixers’ (a stand-in for ‘The Others’ from Lost) are somewhat ambigue at this moment, the characters such as the Shannon’s seem to pretend to know a great deal about the ‘Sixers’ while the viewer is still left guessing. At this moment viwers can alredy guess the nature of the reveal all episode that is surely to come.

As for this weeks’s episode. “Proof’ is pretty straight forward. It mostly focuses on Josh and his continued efforts on getting his girlfriend on the next pilgrimage, as such he has to make a deal with the leader of the ‘Sixers’ and steal valuable medicines from his mother’s hospital. I can’t seem to figure out whether Josh is clever or stupid. He does question the motives of those arounf him but doesn;t ask the right questions. For example, does his girlfriend work for the ‘Sixers’? Do the ‘Sixers’ really need the medicines or is it an effort to sabotage the colony?

In the end he manages to steal the medication rather easily, yet somehow both his father and mother suspect it is him, but the show doesn’t elaborate on how they know. Points like these either makes me suspect the writers think the viwers are simpletons or they are playing a very deep game. Either way the merits of this show makes me view to find out.

As for this weeks plot…

Josh strikes a deal with the Sixers to bring his girlfriend, Kara to Terra Nova on the next pilgrimage, but Mira demands that he first steal a certain drug from the medical center using his mother’s identity card. Meanwhile, Maddy suspects that Dr. Ken Horton (Robert Coleby), a renowned scientist who has just returned from a long research mission, may be harboring a secret about himself. When Maddy uncovers evidence that can expose him, Horton kidnaps and tries to kill her, but Jim, tipped off by Zoe, arrives in time to save her. Commander Taylor encounters Curran, the banished murderer, in the jungle, and offers him an opportunity to return to Terra Nova if he can successfully infiltrate the Sixer’s camp and discover who Mira’s spy in Terra Nova is. After Josh reveals to his parents that he stole the meds, Jim confronts Boylan about the Sixers, and learns that Mira is able to communicate with 2149.

Score; 8.5 /10.

Viewer rating; 7.01 million.

The ratings for Terra Nova seem to be seesawing around the 7 million mark, somehow I doubt it that the shows producers are happy with that figure during it’s first season. Other shows manage better figures and cost only a fraction of the roughly 10 million dollars per episode for Terra Nova.

Terra Nova

Terra Nova

If you count the pilot as one episode then ‘What remains’ is the third episode of fox’s Terra Nova. The premise of this series is that in the future mankind has completely depleted earths resources and have poisoned the atmosphere. However, they have found a way to travel back in time (85 million years). This past if of course filled with Steven Spielberg’s CGI dino’s and is filled with kids with all sorts of teen angst.

After skipping the first two episodes I thought it might be high time to offer my two cents on this scifi-period drama. The first two episodes established the mythology of Terra Nova. The place is run by Commander Nathaniel Taylor and his second Alicia Washington. The Shannon family whose father is in jail manage to get selected to travel to Terra Nova (Seats are few). Daddy Shannon manage to get himself out of a high security prison into a high security time travel machine along with his third illicit child and succesfully travel along mommy Shannon and the other two kids to Terra Nova. Once there Daddy Shannon gets to be sherrif and Mommy Shannon the doctor. so far so good… Right?

The premise is a bit too hollywood prefab for me but its the hand we have been dealt with. Once there the mythology states that the sixth group of people coming to Terra Nova (Sixers) have split up and are hiding in the jungle. The son of commander Taylor has also disapeared but writes down all sorts of strange graffiti that is alluded to as a great secret.

so far for the mythology, but what about the third episode.

While investigating radio silence at a nearby outpost, Elisabeth, Jim, Malcolm, and Commander Taylor discover an outbreak of a mysterious and fatal virus that first causes severe memory loss. More is learned about Commander Taylor’s past, and Skye introduces Josh to someone who may be able to bring Josh’s girlfriend to Terra Nova with the next pilgrimage, but for a high price.

Conclusion….

The episode is fun, I’ll grant it that, but also predictable, its like I have seen these episodes before on Stargate, Star Trek and other series. The episode is a well executed bottle show and lays a lot of groundwork for future episode. The character od commander Taylor kind of has his entire past revealed which I think is a bit early in the show. The love triangle between Elisabeth, Jim and Malcolm is ended with a knock out punch for Malcolm. Though we haven’t heard the last of it… and Shannon’s son of the house Josh gets himself a job at a bar in return for more information on the strange graffiti found in the jungle. Though what he doesn’t know is that the bartender has ratted him out to the ‘sixers’.

To add to the conclusion I will say this, the Shannon kids are boring as hell. they are all thick and their teen angst thingy is starting to get on my nerves, so far we are limbered with three ‘Jar jar’ bink’s.

Score; 7.5/10.

Viewer rating; 7.0 million which is a almost two million decrease over last week. is the magic already over?

Next weeks episode is entitled ‘The Runaway’…

When an orphaned “Sixer” girl seeks asylum in Terra Nova, Jim and Taylor are at odds over whether she can be trusted. Taylor also suspects there is a traitor in his midst. Meanwhile, Mira plots to regain a valued possession, while Reynolds admits he has feelings for Maddy.

Tonight fans of scifi show will have yet again a full monday line up, but it will be one of the last weeks so.

First of, tonight is the final episode of the first season of Alphas. The episode is entitled ‘Orginal sin’ and the synopsis are as follows.

‘Dr.Rosen and his team must choose sides when Red Flag launches a full-out assault on the Department of Defense.’

So it would appear that Alphas will try and stay true to the idea of a first season ending by going out with a bang. That reminds me, I didn’t write a review of the last two episodes. That I will correct right now, though they will be short reviews.

Alphas episode 9 ‘Blind Spot’. This epside guest start Brent Spiner (Star Trek TNG). Dr Rosen and his team capture a doctor who has been experimenting with inducing Alpha abilities in unborn children. Quickly the team discovers he is an Alpha himself, he has the ability to see with sound despite being blind. However the team starts to see strange things and quikcly dedeuce another Alpha has penetrated their headquarters and has the ability to create blind spots in peoples perception and hide there. The invisible woman is a bounty hunter set to kill the doctor because he knows too much about Red Flagg (the pro-Alpha terrorist faction). I wont spoiler anymore but I will say this episode was good, it was sharp and daring and it paid off.

Score; 9/10
Viewer rating; 1.51 million.

Alphas episode 10 ‘The unusual suspects’. This episode brings back the character of Bill Harken who works for the DOD at the Binghamton institute. After a security breach in which old DOD employees from the 60′s were killed it is suepcted that the Alpha team of Dr Rosen has a spy. Depite Harken’s best efforts he doesn’t get anywhere with his interrogation. As a last desperate gamble he allwos them to escape in the hopes the traitor will reveal itself when he tries to erase the last traces of his stay at the Alpha team headquarters. This episode was a little less good than the one before it because some twists were a little bit predictable. Perhaps the writers sensed this because the ending suddenly turns into a brisk flow of revelations.

Score; 8.5/10.
Viewer rating; 1.39 million. These are pretty disasterous ratings, how the hell this show got renewed i do not know!

Alphas ‘Original sin’ Preview!

Terra Nova preview.

Terra nova is the new Steven spielberg scifi show, up to know the buzz has been mixed. Early reviews for the pilot are already out and they average about 8 out of 10. Personally I think a show like this can only succeed with a few Lost style mysteries, though I am not sure if the writers are capable of it. So far I have found the set design to be a little bit too hollywood like.
