The Expanse has been cancelled by Syfy – producers search for alternative

The Expanse has been cancelled by Syfy Syfy has gone back to its roots with doing something it has always done well – cancelling another Sci-Fi series. Now The Expanse has gotten the ax. For a channel that is supposed to be all about science fiction it sure as hell is cancelling a lot of shows. Dark Matter was already cancelled and Killjoys will have its final season next year. Other recent victims were Helix, Continuum and Defiance. In fact so few shows have concluded as they should that I am wondering how Syfy earns its money.  Reasons Reasons for...

Syfy cancels Defiance

Syfy cancels Defiance – After 3 seasons fans will have to switch to Dark Matter, Killjoys and The Expanse

Syfy cancels Defiance In a surprise twist Syfy has cancelled Rockne O’Bannon’s futuristic series. Defiance has only completed its third season this summer, but the steadily dropping ratings were cause for Syfy to cancel it entirely. Defiance first aired in 2013 and was an experiment at a transmedia franchise. At the time of the TV-series launch a Massive Multiplayer Online game set in the same universe was released by Trion Worlds. The MMO game continuous and last year became free-to-play using micro transactions for revenue. Defiance starred Jaime Murray, Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Tony Curran and Stephanie Leonidas. Reasons In a statement released by...

The Medusa Chronicles – Alastair Reynolds and Stephen Baxter join forces

The Medusa Chronicles Hot after the release of his novel Poseidon’s wake and his short-fiction Slow Bullets famed SF author Alastair Reynolds has another book almost ready to go. It is entitled The Medusa Chronicles and it was co-written with another famous SF author, Stephen Baxter. The story is a sequel to the Arthur C. Clarke novel A Meeting With Medusa, published in 1971. The novella served as inspiration for the space dwelling creatures from the Star Trek TNG pilot Encounter at Farpoint. Readers of this blog will know I am major fan of the works of Alastair Reynolds, the same...

Showcase puts final season Continuum online!

Showcase puts final season Continuum online!

Showcase puts final season Continuum online! In a surprise move Canadian broadcaster Showcase placed the première episode of Continuum’s final season online. Continuum is of course the show that stars Rachel Nichols as the time-travelling police officer from the year 2077. She must attempt to stop terrorist from changing history. The show was co-developed by Syfy who won’t air the première until September 4th. Showcase’s move may be an attempt to make its online media channels more popular so to be more competitive with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Together with Continuum they have also released the première episodes of Mr. Robot and the reboot...

William B. Davis in Continuum Season 4 trailer

Continuum Season 4 Trailer Released!

Finally Syfy and Showcase have started their promotion of the upcoming last season of Continuum. With just over a month away from release I started to fear the producers wanted to bury this show quickly. Luckily that is not the case, but promotion is a problem. Continuum has been cancelled, after the upcoming 6 episodes it is truly over. However, I am eager to watch the last season and discover how show runner Simon Barry intends it to end. Below you can watch the 30 second teaser trailer courtesy of TVLine.com – Enjoy! Continuum Season 4 Trailer My opinion of the...

Continuum update season 4 - scarred inspector dillon

Continuum Update – so where the hell is Showcase’s last season?

Continuum Update During the last week or so a few people have emailed me on why I am not covering the new and last season of Continuum. The short questions is I am, there is simply nothing to report. Unlike previous seasons which aired during the summer months this last shortened season is scheduled to start on September 4th. I am pleased so many are still supporting this show and just like me are suffering from Continuum withdrawal symptoms. Sadly, the TV world is ruled by ratings. Continuum aired on Canada’s Showcase channel as well as on Syfy for the rest...

Syfy unveils The Expanse – A hard-boiled space opera by James S. A. Corey

The Expanse If all the news, panels and revelations at this years Comic-Conn weren’t enough Syfy unveiled The Expanse, the channels latest space opera. The series is based on the novel series by James S. A. Corey, the pen names for Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. The Expanse has often been described as A Song Of Ice And Fire set in space. The comparison to G.R.R.M novels focuses mostly on the gritty politics and the shifting Point of View of each chapter. Critics will always judge The Expanse on these comparisons, but the famed author of ASOIAF has given the series...

Killjoys Premiere. Dutch and John

Killjoys Premiere ‘Bangarang’ Review

Killjoys Premiere ‘Bangarang’ Review After the première of Dark Matter last week Syfy is releasing another Sci-fi Adventure series called Killjoys. In many ways the release of two somewhat similar TV-shows is embarrassing as both claim to incorporate elements of Joss Whedon’s Firefly. While I relish at the prospect of competition, both shows also compete with Defiance which is airing concurrently. Keeping my attention on all three TV-shows who all occupy the deadly Friday night TV slot makes me a rather nervous SF fan. The Warrant is ALL! So what is Killjoys all about? Well, essentially the show follows John (Aaron Ashmore), D’avin and...

Dark Matter Series Premiere Review. Zoie Palmer, Roger Cross, Jodelle Ferland, Melissa O'Neill, Alex Mallari, Marc Bendavid and Anthony Lemke

Dark Matter Series Premiere Review

Dark Matter Series Premiere Review Syfy’s latest TV-show Dark Matter is based on the Dark Horse Comics series of the same name created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. In fact, Joseph Mallozzi is a long-time Stargate alumni and acts as executive producer for this show as well. The plot is simple. Six people awake from stasis on a ship in space but have no idea who they are. They try to get organized. Each is given a numeric designation, One through Six. One of them wants to be the leader, but is rebuffed by the others. They find a considerable weapons cache on the ship which...

Syfy adapts Dan Simmons Hyperion as a TV event!

Syfy adapts Dan Simmons Hyperion! The Syfy Channel continues its efforts to re-invent itself. In two days viewers can watch a new SF series: Dark Matter and a week later Killjoys. In the meantime, more fantastic news is out. Syfy adapts Dan Simmons Hyperion as a TV event! According to Blastr.com ‘Syfy channel will team up with producer/actor Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Oscar-winning producer Graham King (Argo) and director/producer Todd Phillips (The Hangover) to bring the massive novel — the first in a tetralogy — to the screen’. There certainly seems to be more than enough talent attached to the project. Also...

Amanda Tapping directing Dark Matter. Syfy Dark Matter Preview

Syfy Dark Matter Preview

This summer Syfy Channel continues with its efforts of producing high-concept science fiction with the release of Dark Matter. Syfy Dark Matter Preview At this moment little is known about Dark Matter except for its premise. According to producer Joseph Mallozzi (Stargate) ‘The series follows the crew of a spaceship who awake from stasis with no clue where they are’. The 13 one-hour episodes are based on the graphic novel Dark Matter by Mallozzi and Mullie, published by Dark Horse Comics. At first this sounds like the third season if Stargate Universe. The comparison does not end there. Stargate Atlantis alumni Torri Higginson will play Cmdr....
