Enterprise season 1 Blu-ray cast (Scott Bakula and Jolene Blalock) Star Trek Enterprise Season 1 Blu-ray Review

This is the review of Star Trek Enterprise season 1 Blu-ray that was released about a week ago. I expect the other seasons to be released every three or four months or so. That means the entire show of just four season will be available in about a year. The show’s Blu-ray return is perhaps not as highly anticipated as the TNG remastering but it is more established with fewer noticeable ‘bad’ episodes. This more formalistic approach does come at the cost of creativity.

Enterprise season 1 aired originally from 2001 to 2002 and featured the following actors….

Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer.
Jolene Blalock as Sub-commander T’Pol.
Connor Trinneer as Charles Tucker (chief engineer).
Dominic Keating as Malcolm Reed (tactical).
Linda Park as Hoshi Sato (communications).
Anthony Montgomery as Travis Mayweather (helm).
John Billingsley as Dr Phlox.

Enterprise is a prequel show to Star Trek TNG, DS9 and Voyager and is set in the 22nd century. As such it deals with a universe that is less established. It’s characters interact more with their surroundings than they ever did on any previous Star Trek show. Enterprise thus puts its focus more on character development than special effects. The latter are top-notch so the show is also a feast to the eyes. The story’s basic premise is that of Captain Archer commanding the first human efforts to explore the universe. This goes against the objections of the Vulcans. This premise felt a bit improbable to most fans but they came to accept it. The show’s inevitable ending after just four seasons does cast a bit of a shadow on this Blu-ray outing.

Enterprise.

Star Trek Enterprise or simply Enterprise is of course the one show of the franchise in recent memory to be cancelled. I am not here to debate where it went wrong. Most fans would agree the rot set in with Voyager and that Enterprise probably even did better than that show. The reason I write this review is that Enterprise despite it’s four seasons has remained in the consciousness of many fans. This is shown in recent suggestions to revive the show with using crowd-funding such as Kickstarter.

If you’re new to Enterprise or just have been a casual fan you may be asking… Is this set worth the 65 dollars? Personally I think so. Especially as the show continued to improve until it was cancelled at the end of its fourth season.

Commander T’pol (Jolene Blalock) in a very tight t-shirt – Enterprise Broken Bow

If you’re a hardcore fan of Star Trek you will pick up the Blu-ray release and simply forgive the few instances of it flirting with the official franchise canon. Despite the best efforts of the creative staff Enterprise remained firmly rooted in the formalistic nature of Star Trek at a time when shows like 24 and later Lost challenged the format. Sometime ago the first rumors of a new Star Trek TV show emerged (and strengthened recently by Ronald Moore). The wish list made by fans couldn’t be more different from the previous shows.

Overall, the episodes of this season are mostly very solid and well thought out. Enterprise manages to flirt with drama and comedy more effectively than any previous Star Trek show. Only some flirting with the official Star Trek canon sometimes distract. If you’re keen to read more on why Enterprise got canceled and where the Star Trek franchise went wrong, than I recommend you read an earlier article from this blog that you can find here (Why was Enterprise cancelled?).

Suggested episodes to cherry pick.

First I will discuss two personal favorites and then three that fans have come to form an agreement on.

Detained; perhaps not the best episode as it is a bit of a ‘bottle’ show but the transfer does justice to high level of drama. The interaction between Dean Stockwell and Scott Bakula harkens back to Quantum Leap. For Dean Stockwell his character of Colonel Grat almost seems like a prototype for brother Cavil in Battlestar Galactica.

Acquisition; widely regarded by fans to have overstepped the line because it involves the Ferengi race before they were discovered in TNG. The episode is nonetheless a good laugh because of its light-hearted nature. It noticeably spoofs Jolene Blalock’s reason for being on the show (!).

The Andorian Incident; this episode establishes the Andorian race very well and puts Archer up against the Vulcan’s. The episode also stars Jeffrey Combs in one of his many effective Star Trek characters (Brunt, Weyoun and now Shran).

Dear Doctor; the Enterprise stumbles across a civilization that is slowly becoming extinct. Captain Archer must decide whether he will give them Warp technology to save themselves as treatment of another race on the same planet is raising serious ethical questions.

Shockwave, Part 1; the seasons finale is an effective ‘whodunit’ that luckily doesn’t delve too much into past events to be called a clip show. The episode marks one of the last major attempts by the Vulcans to stop the Enterprise mission once and for all.

Visuals.

The HD transfer in 1080p look absolutely great. As with the Next Generation transfers they add considerably to the experience of rewatching the show. That said, it is not quite up to the same level as TNG because the transfer hasn’t been remastered. Instead it is a transfer from film to the digital format which leaves some granularity that I didn’t notice with TNG. The seasons special effect were originally shot in 720p and then scaled up for this transfer. This leaves them often with lots of granularity and artifacts that can at times distract. Overall, the transfer adds a new vibe to the show similar to the TNG Blu-ray experience safe for a few minor points. The series opener ’Broken Bow parts 1 and 2′ have slight film edges at the sides and noticeable granularity with the former disappearing in later episodes.

Jolene Blalock as T'Pol taking command of the Enterprise - Detention Star Trek Enterprise Season 1 Blu-ray Review

Jolene Blalock as T’Pol taking command of the Enterprise – Detention

Audio.

I couldn’t find a flaw with the audio. Enterprise of course started airing just over ten years ago and the audio was digitally recorded. So it is top-notch. As it is DTS-HD MA 5.1 the experience is noticeably more interactive than TNG with its stereo sound.

Extra’s.

To be honest, you don’t buy a Blu-ray disc set of a ten-year old show to see the extra’s. You can do that for Star Trek The Next Generation because its first two season have a noticeable murky history. That said, if you want extra’s than you are going to get extra’s. The Blu-ray set comes with the usual commentaries and deleted scenes as well as a featurette formally introducing the franchise. The on-set feature is by far the most exciting thing for fans as it does give a glimpse into world previously little seen. The extra’s are fluffed up with those detailing various technologies of the future and background documentation on Scott Bakula.

Captain Archer and Doctor Phlox discussing the new Sulliban enemy - Enterprise Star Trek Enterprise Season 1 Blu-ray Review

Captain Archer and Doctor Phlox discussing the new Sulliban enemy – Enterprise

Conclusion.

For 65 dollars (at the time of writing) you get a very solid Star Trek outing that definitely leaves you wanting more. Enterprise was perhaps in 2001 not the most creative TV show so if you’re looking for out of the box thinking than you’re going to be slightly disappointed. The transfer is solid and so is the audio. The extra’s are many but perhaps a bit superfluous. The HD transfer adds to the drama just like the TNG remastering does. As such makes for a good rewatch for those fans who have already seen the show.

Score; 8.5 / 10.

Paramount has released a featurette of J.J. Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. To my knowledge it doesn’t contain any new footage but it does re-organize what we have seen in the trailers so far and it clarifies the plot of the movie a bit. As such; SPOILER ALERT! No seriously, this is the featurette that is going to be played and re-played for the coming three months until the release of the movie itself

Here is the dialogue from the voice over provided by the cast and crew.

J.J. Abrams, ”The goal for this movie was definitely to up the ante as much as we could. There were a lot of characters that people were anticipating on seeing. Kirk and Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov and Sulu”, “I am more excited than I can tell you. The action of the movie, the scale of the movie, is light-years beyond what we did in the first movie”

Zachary Quinto, “It was pretty magical to see what they were able to create this time. I think it is stunningly beautiful”.

Chris Pine, “The word I keep getting back to is ‘relentless’. There is one thing after another, after another, after another…”.

Zoe Saldana, “This is the kind of film that 3D is made for”.

J.J. Abrams, “Without question the IMAX and the 3D of it will give viewers yet another level of excitement. This movie is the most fun and challenging experience that I have had. This is like everything I have ever done backed into one movie…”.

These 5 second sound bites at first sound a bit goofy, but if you read them over you get a sense of the stress involved in making Star Trek Into Darkness. From that perspective it is hardly going to turn out to be another Iron Man 2 or Spiderman 3.

Zoe Saldana as Uhura in Star Trek Into Darkness

Zoe Saldana as Uhura in Star Trek Into Darkness

Strangely enough, all the trailers and pictures released so far make the 2009 Star Trek movie look dull and irrelevant. Even with Vulcan being destroyed. During the sequence in which we see Benedict Cumberbatch’s character John Harrison leap though a window it was kind off confirmed that he was a genetically altered human from the past. From that point of view it is strange they did not opt for the return of Khan, but I guess people have expectations with such a return that could raise difficulties creatively.

Chris Pine as Captain Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness

Chris Pine as Captain Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness

Another observation I made was that Uhura (Zoe Saldana) really stands out in what appears to be a male dominated world. The movie does have a Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) but I doubt she will be performing serious action scenes. The Star Trek franchise originated from the early 60′s and as such despite the best efforts of Gene Roddenberry and others it has a problem with women, gays and transsexuals. The 2002-2005 series Enterprise starring Scott Bakula and Jolene Blalock was the high-point in that regards so it is odd that J.J. Abrams should be so conservative. I know that viewer sensitivities are an important consideration for box-office receipts. However, a movie should not just have a challenging plot, but an also a challenging context. We shall see in May whether this concept that is very Roddenberry-ish is understood.

Other Star Trek Into Darkness new…

As you may know by now Star Trek Into Darkness has its own app on which small (no iOS pun intended) snippets are spoilered. Yesterday saw the release of a motion posters. Which you can see below. It’s neat but also superfluous as we have seen the Cumberbatch’ poster for months now.

Star Trek Into Darkness is scheduled for a May 17th release in the UK and USA.

Message to J.J Abrams. When are you going to release the 10-minute preview that was seen with The Hobbit movie? The version I saw has a woman laugh like a hyena and the visuals are just terrible.

Enterprise season 1 Blu-ray cast (Scott Bakula and Jolene Blalock)

Enterprise season 1 Blu-ray cast – Scott Bakula and Jolene Blalock

The Blu-ray release of Enterprise’s first season is more highly anticipated than you might think considering the series got cancelled after four years. After the end of Star Trek DS9 in 1999 and Voyager in 2001 fans of Star Trek generally agreed that the franchise needed a rest. DS9 fans couldn’t imagine another epic storyline in their lifetime and Voyager fans agreed with critics that Star Trek should be more than special effects and Jeri Ryan’s boobs. However, the executive producers of what was to be Enterprise, Brannon Braga and Rick Berman, tried to combine both DS9 and Voyager concepts. The end result being that Enterprise was of good quality but also far too familiar.

Jolene Blalock - Commander T'Pol

Enterprise – Jolene Blalock – Commander T’Pol

After four years of continuously seeing the ratings drop UPC cancelled Enterprise in 2005. Star Trek finally got it’s well deserved rest until the J.J. Abrams reboot. Personally, I got better memories of watching Enterprise than I have got of Voyager. Of the latter I was little more than a casual viewer who had the feeling that every episode was pretty much alike. Enterprise stood out mostly because the universe in which the show operated wasn’t as settled. The result was that there was genuine drama akin to DS9 (especially in the latter 2 seasons). As for Jeri Ryan’s big boobs that was thrown into the mix, at first sub-commander T’Pol (Jolene Blalock) was a very obvious continuation of the character Seven of Nine and was intended to cater to the male audience. However, the character of T’Pol and the acting of Jolene Blalock certainly overcame skeptics. The only major flaw Enterprise inherited from Voyager was the under use of secondary characters such as Malcolm Reed, Hoshi Sato and Travis Mayweather.

Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer

Enterprise – Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer

In the end, as I said before, Enterprise was just too familiar to fans. It continued the procedural space-opera format while fans were wanting a more broader serialized drama that explores different aspects of Star Trek. If rumors are true and Star Trek is going to get another live-action TV-show in a few years, than I think it is in good hands with Bad Robot Productions. Until then, we will have to make do with the Blu-ray releases of Star Trek TNG and Enterprise, but that is hardly a chore now is it!

As UPN shot Enterprise in HD there is very little needed to do for a Blu-ray release (unlike TNG). The first season of Enterprise on Blu-ray is scheduled for a March 26th release. At present, season 1 retails for $ 77.86 on Amazon.com, which I think is rather expensive. Try your luck with some coupons to bring that price down.

All sci-fi series 2013 listed.

With Fringe ending and Alphas cancelled, so soon in the wake of the cancellation of Alcatraz, Terra Nova and Eureka you might be wondering just what Sci-Fi TV-shows are even on the air. For example, last year I only found out about Continuum just a few days before the release of the pilot while browsing the web. On various forums people seem to like the show but the first time they heard about was when it started airing on the Syfy channel two weeks ago. So I decided to make a little list of all current and upcoming sci-fi TV-shows so you won’t have to miss anything. This list won’t include the myriad of shows in webisode format as they are often just on for a short duration and keep irregular schedules.

So here it is, the list of all Science Fiction TV-shows airing in 2013 as well as those in pre-production.

Warehouse 13.

This show starring Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelley is well into its fourth season, but it quality is often inconsistent. It is as goofy as Eureka but somehow I can’t get interested in the characters. During its first two season both Allison Scagliotti and Jaime Murray joined the cast in spectacular fashion but afterwards things got a bit muddled with improbable plots and forgettable villains. I hope Warehouse 13 all the best but even its supporters agree that the first two season have only been emulated in drama and special effects but not in soul. Warehouse 13 will be back April 22nd on the Syfy Channel.

Jaime Murray as H.G. Wells - A New Hope - Warehouse 13 sci-series 2013

Person of Interest.

The adventures of Mr. Reese (James Caviezel) and Mr. Finch (Michael Emerson) has certainly been one of the biggest highlights of the past year, the shows clear realism when it comes to the action scenes stands in contrast with Alphas and Revolution. This show also has the ability to keep reinventing itself and it isn’t afraid of putting the lead characters in the hurt locker. The Sci-fi elements are a bit thin but that is slowly changing. So far the second season has been a slight disappointment with the creative staff trying to delay the mythology elements, but all that changed during the last episode with the return of CIA hit-woman Kate Stanton (Annie Parrisse). Person of Interest will be back January 31st with the episode “Dead Reckoning”.

Person of Interest - Amy Acker as Root sci-series 2013

Person of Interest – Amy Acker as Root

Continuum.

This show is perhaps the only hard-core Science Fiction series airing at the moment, at least until Defiance arrives. It’s relatively short first season was tightly written though it had a hard time deciding whether it would be procedural in nature akin to Person of Interest or more of a serial drama such as Revolution. So far it is a bit of both which I don’t really mind at all. Continuum reminds me a lot of both Sliders and Total Recall 2070, which is high praise. Continuum is also one of the few shows that is not only filmed in Vancouver but also set in Vancouver. The lead-characters of Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) and Carlos Fonnegra (Victor Webster) have this strange distant relationship akin to Louis Lane and Clark Kent (with the roles reversed). I hope this will fixed in the second season. Continuum should be back for a 13-episode season in April.

Rachel Nichols as Kiera Cameron - Family Time - Continuum sci-series 2013

Rachel Nichols as Kiera Cameron – Family Time – Continuum

Revolution.

So far, Revolution has felt a little bit undercooked. It plot has been a bit weak and its characters somewhat bland, though the show does have promise as it’s mythology is still underdeveloped. The first half of its first season did improve gradually but not all creative choices got the thumbs up. The second half of its first season does promise to put some ‘revolution’ into the Revolution with the shows characters such as Rachel Matheson (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Charlie Matheson (Tracy Spiridakos) no longer having to play the damsels in distress. The male leads such as Miles Matheson (Billy Burke) and General Monroe (David Lyons) have really managed to shine. Even though J.J. Abrams is producing it there is little resemblance to Lost when it comes to the quality of narrative, so far no-show has managed to come even close. Revolution will probably do better in the remaining episodes but it is close to being cancelled as ratings hover around 7 million. The show will be back on the air on March 25th.

Rachel Matheson (elizabeth Mitchell) shoots man - Revolution

Rachel Matheson (elizabeth Mitchell) – Revolution

Tron: Uprising.

This anime show on Disney XD is an effort to continue the Tron franchise, though the show’s quality is overall very good its ratings have been quite abysmal. The 22-minute per episode format can be blamed a bit for that because it forces the plot to sometimes jump the shark a bit to keep the action going. Tron Uprising’s final episode ‘Terminal’ will be reviewed on this site tomorrow and I will have to guess afterwards whether we will see the show back for a second season. My instincts tell me ‘no’ though it would leave a big gap for Disney in its line-up.

Tron Uprising - Paige

Tron Uprising – Paige

Haven.

Yes I know, Haven is more of a ‘supernatural’ show than Sci-Fi, so you might think I should add ‘Supernatural’ to the list as well. I agree, perhaps I should, but I won’t. Haven has a lot of mystery and mythology building behind it that reminds me a bit of Lost. So I am just connecting the dots here a bit and so I put the show to the list. Haven just ended with a very good season 3, though due to some sloppy handling of the plot in the second of half of the season it is not as good as it could be, let’s hope that the shows creative staff can up the ante for its fourth season. Expect Haven back in the autumn.

Kate Kelton as Jordan McKee - Haven - Thanks for the Memories

Kate Kelton as Jordan McKee – Haven – Thanks for the Memories

Dr Who.

I don’t often watch Dr Who, but I do know that the franchise has pretty much conquered the world. The show will be back in late March for the remainder of its series 7.

Upcoming shows.

Defiance.

Yes Defiance is that show that also has a MMO running at the same time and it stars Jaime Murray. Personally I can’t wait for a new hard-core Sci-Fi show but I do hope it won’t be too familiar as the premise sounds like a mash-up of some shows from the 90′s. Defiance will start airing on April 15th.

Untitled future-set robot cop series from J.J Abrams.

According to the rumors on Blastr.com the show is being worked with fellow Fringe’s J,H. Wyman. The project is intended for Fox and the pilot may be ready for the autumn, though whether it will be aired it another matter.

***UPDATE***

The untitled show now has a title – Human – and will star Karl Urban and Minka Kelly as the buddy-cop duo with a twist. As reported the pilot is in production so we will see of the show will catch on.

You can read the preview of J.J Abrams Human right here.

Minka Kelly - Human with Karl Urban

Minka Kelly – Human with Karl Urban

Believe.

This is the second new series by J.J. Abrams and is intended for NBC and is about a young girl with special powers who needs to be protected by an ex-con. It sounds a bit familiar but I’ll give it a shot when the pilot arrives. I do hope this doesn’t mean that people at Bad Robot Productions are understaffed because after Alcatraz and Revolution you would think they should concentrate on dotting the I’s.

Rumored upcoming shows.

Star Trek series.

Ever since the Star Trek Reboot the net has been flooded with rumors of a new TV-series based on Star Trek. In the last few months there have even been a few ideas mulled around by people such as J.J. Abrams. I think a reboot can do with a serialized format for a change because the previous 1-episode concludes-all shows were getting a bit on my nerve. If a Star Trek TV-series is in the works, be ready for a long wait.

Star Wars live action TV-series.

This has been in development hell for years now due to high costs, but ever since Disney bought LucasFilm things have shifted into a higher gear. I expect the show to arrive sometime in 2014. If you can’t wait until then, try out Star Wars 1313 video game which promises a fresh take on this franchise.

Ex-Comm.

This show is promised to be a mix between ‘The West Wing’ and ‘The X-files’ with big names such as Jon Favreau, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci behind it. However it has been quiet for while now with the only announcement being from October of 2011 and a few rumors afterwards.

Overall it’s not a bad line-up. It has  made me feel better about Fringe and Eureka because despite them being two good shows they were suffering a bit from creative fatigue. Also note that I have spoofed the amount of bad-girls on TV right now. Most shows still have trouble really making the female characters interesting and instead either used them for drama because the men can’t be seen out of character or as gender benders by giving them useless villain roles.

Please note that if this present line-up were to become reality I will need some more authors for SciFiEmpire.net to keep up with the news and reviews. Feel free to ’Register’ for this site and become a contributor. Regards, Kane.

The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz

This is the cover of Starfleet Academy The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz. The illustration is by Craig M. Staggs

Starfleet Academy The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz is the fourth novel in the series and is set in the Star Trek Reboot Universe that was started with the 2009 movie directed by J. J. Abrams. This series of novels targets those aged 12 and above though it is certainly also recommended for older readers who want their fix of the new Star Trek.

Plot outline….

The story starts with cadet’s Kirk and McCoy joining the ‘Assassination Game’, an impromptu competition at the academy wherein cadets need to kill each other with a spork, McCoy’s reason to join is to impress upon Nadja Luther, the game’s organizer. Kirk meanwhile has gotten embroiled in a fight with a Varkolak, a species hated by most, who attends the a medical symposium held at the academy.

After an explosion almost kills the president of the federation at the opening of the symposium the blame quickly falls on the Varkolak. Meanwhile Uhura is on assignment for Spock, she needs to infiltrate the Graviton Society, a secret club within Starfleet that tries to alter federation policy against any perceived threats. Members of the society suspect Spock being an infiltrator and set with the help of cadet Hikaru Sulu to lure him out. Unbeknown to the society Sulu has also been working for Spock.

The Graviton society nonetheless manages to turn opinion against the visiting Varkolak after a second explosion kills thirteen people. McCoy and Kirk tackle the case of the bombings from opposite ends of that of Spock and Uhura. After finding a lead to makes them suspect a Tellarite named Daagen they successfully manage to tie him to the Graviton Society but not before they prove he is innocent of the bombing and McCoy finds himself accused as the bomber. While Starfleet mobilizes to counter the Varkolak armada that has come to the rescue of the visiting Varkolak Kirk, Uhura, Spock, Sulu and even Chekov must try their best to catch the real perpetrator who turns out to be Nadja Luther.

The story ends with Spock professing his love to Uhura, which basically explains the last details that was missing from the Star Trek movie.

Review…

The Assassination Game tries its hands at a great many popular themes that may appeal to young readers, as such it doesn’t take too much risk when it comes to controversial subjects such as death and sex like earlier Starfleet Academy novels (The Delta Anomaly), it pushes these things more to the background. The concept of the secretive Graviton Society seems to me too similar to Section 31, my best guess is that the author originally wanted to write about that but didn’t want to alienate new readers who aren’t familiar with that organization.

The author does manage to include humor very aptly and with much recurrence, the ’assassination game’ that is being played allows certain characters to show up pretty much at any time and that they are trying to ‘kill’ Kirk with a spork is used effectively as a running joke. Perhaps the author’s experience with young adult novels does give him an edge over the previous attempts of writers in the series. His repeated use of phrases and situations from earlier Star Trek shows such the The Original Series and The Next Generation shows that he has much knowledge on the subject.

His introduction of Sulu into the franchise is effective and he manages to give the character considerable depth, the return of cadet Chekov is especially pleasing as he seems so much like the character of the movie. The author has also not forgotten previous characters introduced in the series such Tikhonov and Finnegan. With the fleshing out of Spock’s character we also learn a bit more about the workings of Starfleet behind the scenes.

I have a few gripes with the novel. The villain, Nadja Luther, has motives that seem a bit contrived and shoehorned to fit the story, also it was already clear quite early on that she was the perpetrator of the bombings, at least the author tried to connect the dots with making sure the characters in the story find the leads in a plausible fashion. Another drawback of the story is the main protagonist Kirk, he still seems a little wooden compared to Spock, Uhura and McCoy. His constant womanizing is funny but his background is little explored, the author goes into his childhood a little bit in order to make him sympathize with the antagonist’s motives but the details that are given are already known.

Overall this novel is along with The Edge among the best in the series, perhaps even the best. Now I haven’t gone into the plot too much so not to spoiler too much. This book is a definite recommendation as a summer read. It is a shame it is over so quickly.

The Assassination Game

After less than a week to go until its supposed June 26th release date publishers Simon & Schuster have finally revealed the cover of the fourth installment in The Starfleet Academy young adult novel series. Book 4 is entitled The Assassination game and is written by Alan Gratz. So far, I have reviewed all earlier novels in the series and I must say I am looking forward to this one. And even though the plots seems to have elements from the 1980′s movie Gotcha it also seems that series will continue its often bleak view of reality.

The cover itself is OK I think, it seems to continue the style of the earlier covers while also adopting IDW’s retro look they use for their comics. The third character besides Kirk and Uhura is of course Hikaru Sulu (played by George Takei in TOS and by John Cho in the Star Trek Reboot), as far as I recall his character was not yet introduced in Starfleet Academy series. In the previous novel, The Gemini Agent, we were introduced to Pavel Chekov who was certainly the best character in an otherwise lackluster novel.

Here is the synopsis of The Assassination Game…

The rules are simple: Draw a target. Track him down and “kill” him with a spork. Take your victim’s target for your own. Oh, and make sure the player with your name doesn’t get to you first. No safe zones. No time-outs. The game ends when only one player remains. James T. Kirk is playing for fun. Leonard “Bones” McCoy is playing to get closer to a girl. But when a series of terrorist attacks rock the usually placid Starfleet Academy campus, it becomes clear that somebody is playing the game for real. Is it one of the visiting Varkolak, on Earth to attend an intergalactic medical conference? Or could it be a member of a super-secret society at the Academy dedicated to taking care of threats to the Federation, no matter what rules they have to break to do it? As I have not posted anything on Star Trek novels lately like I used to I will give a brief summary of what has happened on this front.

***UPDATED***

Starfleet Academy The assassination GameHere is the cover of Starfleet Academy The Assassination Game.

***UPDATED***

Starfleet Academy The Assassination Game’.

First of all is the prospective release of the Young adult novel ‘Starfleet Academy The Assassination Game’ by Alan Gratz late June next month, I say prospective because even though it is highly expected by fans there has been no information on this book whatsoever. Meaning no new synopsis, front cover or interviews by the author. Which gives rise to fears that its release date has slipped. More on this topic during the coming month.

Star Trek: Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night

Star Trek: Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night.

Second bit of news is the release of the next Typhon Pact novel ‘Plagues of Night’ late this month followed by ‘Raise the Dawn’ next month, both novels will continue the storyline of TNG, DS9 and VOY characters as they for many months have little to do when authors don’t write Star Trek Novels. As for the synopsis and spoilers I would recommend other sites or just sit tight until the first novel is released.

Typhon Pact will return in September with ‘Brinkmanship’.

Star Trek Vanguard: Storming Heaven.

Recently the novel series Star Trek Vanguard concluded with ‘Storming Heaven’ written by David Mack, according to reviewers it was not as good as earlier iterations it was nonetheless a spectacular conclusions to this series. Pick it up if you want to know how Vanguard ends.

Star Trek Titan: Fallen Gods.

In July Star Trek Titan will return with ‘Fallen Gods’, sad to say I do not know what to expect, after the first two novels in the series I found it all rather too conventional. Perhaps I will give Fallen Gods a chance this summer.

Star Trek Cold Equations.

In November author David Mack will start of a new Trilogy entitled ‘Cold Equations’ which promises to bring three engrossing but highly individual stories. The novels are set in the TNG universe and will reportedly still have the Typhon Pact as a back story. Well I certainly can’t wait. It’s about time someone let in a bit of fresh air into TNG.

Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: Forgotten History.

Talking about time, last month the second book in Christopher L. Bennet’s series Department of Temporal Investigations (DTI) was released. The second book is entitled ‘Forgotten history’. I recently read the first one which I thought was a really thorough Star Trek work, the author certainly shows he masters all the series and their details. The novel was also provocative, it searched up new boundaries for Star Trek and in doing also proved quite mind bender.

Please stick around for the review of the second book in the DTI series.

The Never Ending Sacrifice

Yet another Typhon pact novel has been announced by Simon and Schuster, Brinkmanship will be written by Una McCormack who wrote such novels as Hollow Men and The Never Ending Sacrifice, both were featured the Cardassians and so its a good bet this novel will too!

Brinkmanship is scheduled for a September 25th release, stay tuned!

Star Trek game 2012 Digital Extremes

Between the two movies, the novels and the comics it is almost possible to forget that there also exists a console game set in the reboot universe. This Star Trek game has so far got the simple title ‘Star Trek’, it is produced by veteran game developer Digital Extremes. Digital Extremes is of course famous for games such as Unreal and Bioshock. Officially the game is slated to appear only on Xbox 360 and PS3, but a PC version can’t be excluded.

The has got an official canon script that has been penned by the likes such as Bob Orci (brother of Roberto) and Alex Kurtzman (The Island, Star Trek). The game development team also takes into account the comic novels that have so far been released sp it’s not like this some standalone game that would have to resolve its plot lines without there being any consequences to the canon timeline.

The release date for the game has always been – 2012 – my guess that would probably be either Q3 or Q4 next year.

Now, as for the E3 trailer…

And the screenshots that have been released recently…

Star Trek Destiny Omnibus

Here are the details of the 2012 line up of Star Trek novels from Simon & Schuster. In the Last few months we have hit a bit of dry spell when it came to releases and the synopsis of the upcoming novels seem to arouse anticipation. Please note the details of ‘The assassination game’, so far we have been kept in the dark about the latest entry into the Starfleet Academy series.

Star Trek: Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night

Publication date: May 29, 2012

An all-new novel set in the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation! In the wake of the final Borg invasion, which destroyed entire worlds, cost the lives
of sixty-three billion people, and struck a crippling blow to Starfleet, six nations adversarial to the United Federation of Planets—the Romulan Star Empire, the Breen Confederacy, the Tholian Assembly, the Gorn Hegemony, the Tzenkethi Coalition, and the Holy Order of the Kinshaya—joined ranks to form the Typhon Pact. For almost three years, the Federation and the Klingon Empire, allied under the Khitomer Accords, have contended with the nascent coalition on a predominantly cold-war footing. But as Starfleet rebuilds itself, factions within the Typhon Pact grow restive, concerned about their own inability to develop a quantum slipstream drive to match that of the Federation. Will leaders such as UFP President Bacco and RSE Praetor Kamemor bring about a lasting peace across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, or will the cold war between the two alliances deepen, and perhaps even lead to an all-out shooting war?

Star Trek: Typhon Pact: Raise the Dawn

Publication date: June 26, 2012

An all-new novel set in the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation. After the disastrous events in the Bajoran system, Captain Benjamin Sisko must confront the consequences of the recent choices he has made in his life. At the same time, the United Federation of Planets and its Khitomer Accords allies have come to the brink of war with the Typhon Pact. While factions within the Pact unsuccessfully used the recent gestures of goodwill—the opening of borders and a joint Federation-Romulan exploratory mission—to develop quantum-slipstream drive, they have not given up their goals. Employing a broad range of assets, from Romulus to Cardassia, from Ab-Tzenketh to Bajor, they embark on a dangerous new plan to acquire the technology they need to take control of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. While UFP President Bacco and Romulan Praetor Kamemor work feverishly to re-establish peace, Captains Sisko, Jean-Luc Picard, and Ro Laren stand on the front lines of the conflict…even as a new danger threatens the Bajoran wormhole as it once more becomes a flashpoint of galactic history.

Starfleet Academy: The Assassination Game.

Publication date: June 26, 2012

When a terrorist attack rocks Starfleet Academy, it’s clear someone
has a very serious—and very deadly—secret agenda.

Leonard “Bones” McCoy is playing to get
closer to a girl. But when a series of terrorist attacks rock the usually placid Starfleet Academy campus, it becomes clear that somebody is playing the
game for real. Is it one of the visiting Varkolak, on Earth to attend an intergalactic medical conference? Or could it be a member of a super-secret
society at the Academy dedicated to taking care of threats to the Federation,
no matter what rules they have to break to do it? Find out in The Assassination Game, the fourth instalment in Spotlight’s exciting series
for teens.

Star Trek: Titan: Fallen Gods

Publication date: July 31, 2012

The Starship Titan continues on her outward voyage of discovery in this latest exciting novel.

Though the Federation still reels from Andor’s political decision that will forever
affect the Federation, Captain William T. Riker and the crew of the U.S.S.
Titan
are carrying out Starfleet’s renewed commitment to deep space exploration. While continuing to search the Beta Quadrant’s unknown expanses for an ancient civilization’s long-lost quick-terraforming technology—a potential boon to many Borg-ravaged worlds across the Federation and beyond—Titan’s science specialists encounter the planet Ta’ith, home to the remnant of a once-great society that may hold the very secrets they seek. But this quest also takes Titan perilously close to the deadly Vela Pulsar, the galaxy’s most prolific source of lethal radiation, potentially jeopardizing both Titan and what remains of the Ta’ithan civilization. Meanwhile, Riker finds himself on a collision course with the Federation Council and the Andorian government, both of which intend to deprive Titan of its Andorian crewmembers. And one of those Andorians—Lieutenant Pava Ek’Noor sh’Aqabaa—uncovers a terrible danger that has been hiding in plain sight for more than two centuries….

Star Trek: Voyager: The Eternal Tide

Publication date: August 28, 2012

An all-new novel that continues the epic saga of the Starship Voyager! As the Voyager fleet continues its exploration of the Delta Quadrant, investigating the current status of sectors formerly controlled by the Borg becomes the fleet’s priority. Two of the fleet’s special mission vessels, Galen and Demeter are left at New Talax to aid Neelix’s people while Voyager, Quirinal, Esquiline, Hawking, and Curie move out to do a systematic search for any remnants of the Borg or caeliar. Achilles moves to a location central enough to offer aid to the exploring vessels as needed.

As this mission begins, Fleet Commander Afsarah Eden, who has shared what
little she knows of her mysterious past with Captain Chakotay, begins to experience several more “awakenings” as she encounters artefacts, people, and
places that make her feel connected to her long lost home. She is reluctant to
allow these to overshadow her mission, but this becomes increasingly difficult
as time passes….

Star Trek: Vanguard: Storming Heaven

Publication date: March 27, 2012

The final novel in the acclaimed Vanguard saga, based on Star Trek: The Original Series! Secret operations, sealed orders, high-risk military special operations—such dangerous missions have been at the core of the Star Trek Vanguard series since its inception. Four great nations—the Federation, the Klingon Empire, the Tholian Assembly, and the Romulan Star Empire—have all taken tremendous risks in their race to learn and control the technologies of the ancient interstellar hegemons known as the Shedai. Now get ready for the mystery of the Taurus Reach to be revealed….

Star Trek: DTI: Forgotten History

Publication date: April 24, 2012

In a universe where history as we know it could be wiped out at
any moment, only the most disciplined, obsessive, and unimaginative government employees have what it takes to face the existential uncertainty of it all: Federation investigators Lucsly and Dulmur.
Temporal investigation is a thankless job. While Starfleet explorers get to live the adventure of traveling to other times and realities, it’s up to the dedicated agents of the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations to deal with the consequences of the timestream the rest of us have to live in day by day. But in a universe where history could be eradicated by time warriors from the future, misused relics of ancient races, or accident-prone starships, only the most disciplined agents  can still stay sane enough to do their jobs.

That’s where Agents Lucsly and Dulmur come in. These stalwart, unflappable
investigators are the Federation’s unsung anchors in a chaotic universe.
Together with their colleagues in the DTI, and with the help and sometimes
hindrance of Starfleet’s finest, they do what they can to keep the timestream,
or at least the paperwork, as neat and orderly as they are, using their
investigative skill and unbending determination to keep the present and the
future from falling into the kind of chaos they really, really despise.

Star Trek: Destiny

Publication date: March 13, 2012. This is a reprint of the earlier Destiny books.

The omnibus edition of the epic crossover trilogy uniting characters from every corner of the Star Trek universe and revealing the shocking origin and final fate of the Federation’s most dangerous enemy—the Borg. In Gods of Night, blitzkrieg attacks by the Borg leave entire worlds aflame. No one knows how they are slipping past Starfleet’s defences, so Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise have to find out—and put a stop to it.

In Mere Mortals, the Borg have found a secret passage through subspace and are using it to attack the Federation. But the passage is one of many that the Enterprise crew finds inside a nebula, and Captain Picard and Captain Ezri Dax must find the right one—and lead a counter strike to stop the impending Borg invasion.

In Lost Souls, an armada of several thousand Borg cubes has wiped out a fleet of ships sent by the Federation and its allies. But the Collective’s goal this time isn’t assimilation—it’s extermination.

Destruction or salvation—only one can be her final Destiny.

Star Trek: That Which Divides

Publication date: February 28, 2012

Located in an area of non-aligned space near Federation and Romulan territory, the Kondaii system is home to a unique stellar phenomenon: a spatial rift that opens every three years in proximity to the system’s sole inhabited planet. Only during this brief period is communication possible with the small, mineral-rich planetoid inside the rift. The local population has established a mining colony on this planetoid, and for the limited du ration that the rift is open, a massive interplanetary operation is set into motion: ferrying mineral ore to the home planet while simultaneously transferring personnel and replenishing essential supplies and equipment—everything necessary to sustain the colony before it once again enters forced isolation.

While studying the rift, the science vessel U.S.S. Huang Zhong is severely damaged and crash-lands on the planetoid. After the Starship Enterprise arrives to conduct rescue operations, evidence quickly points to the rift’s artificial nature. It is a feat far beyond the capacity of the local inhabitants, and presents an alluring mystery for Captain James T. Kirk and his crew. It also attracts the attention of the Romulans, who are most interested in studying and perhaps seizing this supposed advanced technology—by any means necessary.
