Agent Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi) wearing a gas mask - Person of Interest - Relevance

Agent Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi) wearing a gas mask

This week’s episode of Person of Interest is special in that it is the directorial début of Jonathan Nolan. Those who watch the episode will agree it is among the best episodes yet. Personally I think it is the best PoI has to offer. If that doesn’t convince you to watch it read the plot overview below and lament what you have missed on-screen. Relevance is the 16th episode of Person of Interest’s second season, so there are only 7 episodes left.

Root (Amy Acker) listening in on Special Council - Person of Interest

Root (Amy Acker) listening in on Special Council

As for the plot of ‘Relevance’…

The episode begins with two C.I.A operatives tracking a group is Islamic militants in Berlin. After being spotted by two terrorists agent Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi) is forced to kill them. Despite the setback her colleague Cole manages to trace them to an apartment. While preparing to assassinate the terrorist Cole questions how the ‘research’ department always manages to get ‘social security’ numbers of terrorists. Shaw doesn’t question the source and states she just follows orders. The terrorists in the apartment are using cesium to make a dirty bomb so Shaw is forced to make a quick entry. While Cole introduces a paralyzing gas into the room she enters it and ceases the cesium. One terrorist manages to fight back and after shooting him Shaw removes the bullets from his corpse to hide her presence. The apartment is subsequently blown up so it will look like a bomb making effort gone wrong.

Cole

Cole – Person of Interest – Relevance

Back in New York Shaw is given her next assignment by her C.I.A handler agent Wilson. This time it seems to be a case of a domestic US terrorist and she needs to track man named James Mercer. While tracking their suspect Shaw spots Mr. Reese (Jim Caviezel) tracking Mercer but thinks nothing of it. Shaw’s colleague Cole continues to question the source of the numbers and states that he traced money paid to a Hezbollah terrorist called ‘Aquino’ back to the C.I.A and that he has a filed a complaint of possible corruption. Shaw thinks it is a bad move but otherwise keeps her attention on her present assignment. Upon entering Mercer’s apartment Shaw quickly discovers that it is set up when emails of her are found on a laptop and shots are heard outside indicating Mercer’s death. Cole is subsequently shot as unknown gunmen enter the apartment, though Shaw manages to take them out in spectacular fashion. With his dying breath Cole states that he always wanted to be her hero and eludes to a connection between their ambush and his investigation.

Shaw and Gunman jumping out of window Bourne Identity style - Person of Interest

Shaw and Gunman jumping out of window Bourne Identity style – Person of Interest

While Shaw is trying to shoot her way out of the apartment complex she encounters Mr. Reese. Despite Reese’s best efforts at convincing he is on her side she shoots him. As more gunmen are making their way up the stairs Shaw uses a gunmen she injured (by placing a flash grenade in his helmet) as a shield as she dives out of the window two stories up. While getting up unharmed she finds more gunmen disabled by Mr. Reese. Shaw also encounters agent Wilson who is talking on a mobile phone to his boss the ‘Special Council’ (Jay O. Sanders) informing him the operation is failing. Wilson manages to injure Shaw before she escapes. Wilson’s boss encourages him to find her at all cost. Root (Amy Acker) overhears this conversation as she is acting as the private secretary to the ‘Special Council’. An injured Shaw abducts a drug-dealer and uses his apartment to patch up her gun wound. More drug dealers enter the apartment after she loses consciousness but Shaw manages to shoot them when she wakes up and finds them assaulting the drug dealer she abducted.

Mr. Reese (Jim Caviezel) removing the needle - Person of Interest

Mr. Reese (Jim Caviezel) removing the needle

Shaw contacts the person Cole used to tell them of the possible corruption within the C.I.A and makes an appointment to give evidence. The Special Council is convinced that agent Wilson alone can’t make sure that Shaw is killed for what Cole uncovered and enlists the help of Hersh (Boris McGiver). Hersh states that Shaw is one of the best and that he trained her himself. Hersh states that Shaw will seek revenge for her partner and to uncover what happened during the ‘Aquino’ operation. As Shaw meets with Cole’s C.I.A contact the audience discovers that it is actually Root posing instead. Shaw hears sounds coming from the bathroom and discovers Cole’ contact gagged. Root teasers Shaw and ties her up. While preparing an ironing board for torture Root taunts her with the true origin of the ‘numbers’ and states she seeks to uncover where ‘The machine’ is located as that was what ‘Aquino’ was working on. Then more government gunmen arrive and Root escapes. The gunmen receive orders to kill Shaw and try inject her with poison but she manages to disable them. With a needle sticking out of her shoulder Shaw is in imminent danger of being poisoned. When Mr. Reese shows up he manages to persuade her to have him help her in return for not shooting him.

Shaw (Sarah Shahi) takes out government hitmen - Person of Interest

Shaw (Sarah Shahi) takes out government hitmen

Reese introduces Shaw to Finch. Finch makes her an offer. Instead of running she can continue working for him trying to stop terrorist attacks. She refuses and states she is a soldier and follows orders. Shaw finds out where the ‘Special Council’ is and follows him to an official function. The ‘Special Council’ recognizes her and enters into a casual conversation with her. He questions her motives, but she replies she never had any intention of exposing the ‘Aquino’ affair and hands him the evidence. Shaw does question why Cole had to be killed as she could have warned him off. Shaw then shoots Wilson in the head because she didn’t agree with his methods. The Special Council then allows her to leave. Hersh ambushes her with a needle at a traffic stop. He supposedly kills her but when Detective Fusco and Carter show up it is alluded that she is still alive. Leon disguised as an ambulance driver quickly drives her away as a police officer starts questioning just how Shaw died. Fusco draws away his attention by ordering him to get a coffee. While Reese and Finch are discussing what to do about Shaw they are approached by an irritable Leon. Leon states that after injecting her with the anti-dote of the poison he ended up in a struggle with her. Shaw then approaches Leon, Reese and Finch and aims a gun at them. Reese berates Leon for not patting her down. After Shaw takes their mobile phones Finch urges her to reconsider his offer, but Shaw drives away with the ambulance instead.

Conclusion…

Relevance is Person of Interest’s best episode so far. The season and half of episode’s that have aired until now feel comparatively more like a test run. Relevance has the feel of a pilot episode. And as Jonathan Nolan’s directorial début it can be best described as Person of Interest’s second pilot. The only worry I have is that so many future episode’s won’t live up tot he quality of this one. This episode also feels a lot like an episode of ‘Lost’ due to the clever use of drama. As PoI is a ’Bad Robot Production’ show you must not be too surprised by that.

Agent Samantha Shaw shoots Wilson - Person of Interest - Relevance

Agent Samantha Shaw shoots Wilson

Sarah Shahi’s character introduction is so effective that it exposes the awkward fact that PoI concentrated too much on Mr. Finch and Mr. Reese. Some bloggers have labeled Sarah’s appearance on PoI as a potential back-door pilot for another series. I don’t see that happening just yet  but it is high-praise. Sarah Shaw’s character Samantha Shahi is probably the best female action protagonist I have seen so far. Shaw isn’t a woman who uses her impossible good looks to unrealistically deceive men or win impossible fights against men twice her weight. Her character is carefully honed to the Person of Interest universe and as such it will be a delight to see more of her as either co-protagonist or antagonist.

This episode also brings a sense of realism as it alludes to many spy-craft methods and past events. I hope that will continue as well. The scene with the introduction of gas into the terrorist apartment felt like something out of a Frederick Forsyth novel. The scene were Shaw places a stun grenade under gas helmet of gunman felt like something from Half-life 2. Overall this episode introduced new elements while maintaining clever homages to other works.

The re-introduction of Leon Tao (Ken Leung) also promises to yield a lot more divergent storylines. Placing Detective Carter and Fusco in the pasture for a week is not negative thing per se, as long as they are back next week.

The only slight that I could think of with this episode is the Shaw’s poisoning by Hersh in the last act. If the poison kills within 4 minutes than how did anyone such as Reese or Leon manage to introduce the antidote? The timeline is a bit screwy, something that was noticed by many fans.

The episode was written by Amanda Segel and Joanthan Nolan. I do hope they will team again in the future.

Score; 10 / 10. Best episode of Person of Interest so far!

Song of week; Future Starts Slow by The Kills.

As has become tradition with PoI is that every episode has a fantastic track by a established band. Go ahead and listen.

As I have mentioned a few times before in the last couple of week I think Person of Interest is a bit lost (no pun intended). What I means is… the show’s mythology seems to remain even a mystery to its creative staff. After the surprise death of a number of a antagonists (Donnelly, Snow and Stanton) PoI seemed destined for a radical turnaround. And tonight’s episode Relevance seems to promise just that. The episode is the directorial début of Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher Nolan) and will see the introduction of a new uber villain played by Sarah Shahi.

Here is the preview trailer of ‘Relevance’…

I am glad they once again brought back the fact that bullets really are dangerous to people. I haven’t seen that since the end of season 1. What is weird is the reference made by Finch to Sarah Shahi’s character with regards that they work for the same team. Does this mean her character is really a villain? All the interviews with Sarah Shahi seem to indicate so.

Person of Interest Logo - Jonathan Nolan starring Jim Caviezel & Michael Emerson

Next Thursday Person of Interest will be back with the episode ‘Booked Solid’. Now that season 2 has been in full swing for a while it is time to look back. Has Person of Interest managed to live up to expectations? For the most part that answer is YES but there are plenty of gripes to be had with its second season. For one it took a while for the shows mythology to be brought to center-stage. Instead the procedural aspects of the show was starting to affect its quality. Now that the mythology is indeed back in the forefront one can criticize the rather ad hoc nature of plot development. Not only has the hacker Root been missing for like the length of the bible but other villains have been killed off in quick succession (most notably: agent Donnelly,  Kara Stanton and Mark Snow). Rumor has it that scheduling conflicts were part of the reason these characters were knocked off. As a fan of the show I can say I was not amused. Just when things got interesting we are back at square one. The revelation that Finch may have something to do with the laptop falling into Chinese hands which required Mr. Reese to travel with Kara Stanton to Ordos to retrieve it was a weak sweetener.

However, the show goes on. Let’s hope the creative staff can manage to find their way through these ‘setbacks’. ‘Booked Solid’ seems to be more of a procedural episode, but there have been gems with those in the past. By the looks of it our favorite sidekick Zoe (Paige Turco) will also return.

Person of Interest Logo - Jonathan Nolan starring Jim Caviezel & Michael Emerson

It almost seems like yesterday that the first season of Person of Interest stopped airing. Perhaps the fact that Person of Interest spanned 23 episodes in its first season while maintaining a very high level of quality that it seems that just a short while ago Finch was kidnapped. The first epsiode of the second season of Perosn of Interest will air next Thursday September 27th.

Now, as for The Contingency, below is the press release…

“The Contingency” – With Finch missing – kidnapped by his hacker nemesis, Root, in last season’s finale cliffhanger – Reese enlists Detectives Carter and Fusco to get his friend back, on the second season première of PERSON OF INTEREST, Thursday, Sept. 27 (9:00 – 10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  Meanwhile, The Machine never sleeps, disseminating a new number to Reese.  Ken Leung (“Lost”) guest stars as the latest POI, and Amy Acker (“Dollhouse,” “Angel”) reprises her role as Root.

Finch and the setup

Finch and the setup

‘Mission Creep’ is the third episode of Person of Interest and is for that matter it’s first ‘social-security-number-of-the-week’ episode. Meaning that the writer’s did not want to advance the mythology any further but instead wanted to concentrate on making an episode with the things that are already in its universe. Usually these episodes make up the bulk of a tv-series and as such are of a little lower quality than the mythology episodes. That is certainly the case with this episode but the quality is only a little less than the previous episode and that makes me anxious for a lot more ‘social-security-number-of-the-week’ episode. That said, at the end of the episode there was a small matter concerning an unknown adversary for Reese and Finch which hints at a series antagonist. Up to this point I wasn’t really in the mood for one but the little spoiler piqued my curiosity.

As for the story…

Reese looks up Mr Finch at his secret lair in what I remember was a library, after being woken up by a cup of coffee finch announces that ‘The Machine’ has come up with a new social secruity number of someone who is either a victim or perpetrated of a murder. The man they are looking for is Joey Durban, a retired soldier who now works as a doorman. Reese at first can’t figure out how the man is involved with any kind of criminal activity until Reese follows him into a bank where Durban with three other men suddenly rob the place.

Durban & Reese

Durban & Reese

For Finch it seems like a done deal. Durban is clearly a perpetrator and the easiest thing to do is in his own words ‘gift wrap the evidence’ so Durban would have to go to jail and not be able to murder anyone. Reese disagrees and questions why a man such as Durban would be involved in a crime spree as he has a fiance and possibly a child from an earlier marriage. Finch agrees Reese should do more and find out more and thus Reese joins the gang. This he does by contacting the ring leader who is a retired officer and present owner of a bar.

Finch makes a vacancy within the gang possibly by first taking a ride in a cab who is driven by a gang member and leaving a bunch of guns about in the boot before calling the police.

Reese is informed about the trap

Reese is informed about the trap

To the viewer it just seems a little easy for Reese to just walk up to a bartender and being allowed to join the gang even if his cover story is good. That is until we find out the bartender Sam Latimer doesn’t intend for Reese to get away from his first task unscaved.

After a difficult meeting with the rest of the gang, who consists of not so memorable members we see Reese making careful approaches to Durban. Slowly the details around the gang start to emerge. It appears that the ring leader Latimer makes a clean sweep through the gang once every year or so and that is what ‘The Machine’ picked up. Reese and Durban questions each other as to why they joined the gang, Durban speaks of a debt and Reese understands he doesn’t owe anyone any money but that something else is going on.

In the meantime one gang member called ‘Straw’ needs money quickly, Latimer showes some sympathy and says a big score is going down soon.

Latimer under fire

Latimer under fire

After a filed shakedown of a casino they are finally sent onto their final target, the evidence locker’s of a police station. The gang members are pressed by Straw to hand in their communicators and as such Finch can’t contact him with the news that the heist is a set up. Finch instead beats Reese to the police station and pretends to be a lawyer when the gang shows up. Reese continues with the heist anyway and makes a getaway with the gang after they have obtained the sought after evidence. Latimer is waiting for them at their getaway vehicle and after recieving the evidence promptly starts shooting the gang members. The weapons the gang is carrying don’t have live rounds but Reese has a back up and scares Latimer away leaving two gang members dead.

The next scene shows Reese asking Durban why he was in the gang, Durban reveales that a buddy in Iraq took a position on a patrol from him and got killed, he needs the money to pay for the education of his friends daughter. Reese warns him that the police would soon know his involvement in the gang and that he needs to skip town with his fiance, this Durban does.

Latimer is seen with a unknown man during which Latimer gives the man the evidence obtained during the heist. It is alluded that Latimer is killed and later on Reese finds his body. Reese and Finch now know a very dangerous man has just obtained something very important and if the man knew they were after him they would be in danger….

Durban and his fiance skipping town

Durban and his fiance skipping town

Conclusion…

There is a less personal development of the characters in this episode and that was certainly missed, the character of Durban is the sole exception to that and as such is also a character that may return in the furture.

Detective Carter yet again has only a marginal role and that is a shame because the number of characters should increase if this show wants to continue being interesting.

Score; 8/10.

Viewer rating; 11.46 million (so far viewer numbers have not disapointed).

Finch and his partner

Finch and his partner

The second episode of Person of Interest almost feels like a second pilot for the series. Not only is more background revealed but more questioned are asked, more rules are made (and broken) and the series defiantly declares that its off-beat and won’t use the machine that identifies crimes as a ‘deus ex machina’.

The episode is tightly written, alot happens in the space of 45 minutes and so its going to be a long read to fully understand the plot and even then I would say I left out details for brevity……

Finch as Harold

Finch as Harold

Reese starts the episode by saving a man from two hitmen after his wife has found he was having an affair. The shooting of the two hitmen alerts detective Carter (Taraji Henson) of Reese’s continuing activity. Finch (michael Emerson) meanwhile contacts Reese saying he has a new social security number of a potential victim, after Reese unsuccessfully tracks Finch they agree to meet at a graveyard where Finch rveals that the number belongs to a supposedly dead girl called Teresa Whitaker who had been murdered along with her parents and brother two years before. Finch and Reese delve into the murky history of her family, they had been in the construction business and the police suspected an murder/suicide by the father because of debts he accumalated during the recession. Reese on the other hand sees a hitman carefully covering his tracks and believes the murder might have something to do with the girls uncle. While Reese tries to track down Teresa Finch interviews the girls aunt who reveals she has split up with her husband.

While this cat and mouse game of finding the girl and her families’ killer ensues we see flashbacks of Finch as he was in 2002, this was the period after 9/11 when he and his partner (played by Brett Cullen, who played Goodwin on lost) built ‘the machine’. At first we see their amazement at how their invention works though its a number of years away from completion. Later on we see desperation as we find that ‘the machine’ also uncovers murder plots but that the government filters out this information. Finch is seen without a limp in his gait and of course this raises the question what happened between him and his partner before the events at the start of the series.

Reese and Hitman

Reese and the Hitman

Meanwhile Reese once again contacts the corrupt cop Fusco who is still bound by extortion with helping Reese, together they find the Killer of the Whitaker family in jail but the man doesn’t know who his contractor was and obviously can’t be the potential killer of Teresa Whitaker. Meanwhile Finch’s cover as an employee at the company he owns allows him to research the whitaker fincial history and he uncovers a relation with Landale Finacials concerning a plot of land. Apparently the land was polluted and thus cheap to buy, after the goverment cleans up the land gives the all important ‘bill of health’ the value would skyrocket 40 to 50 times. However Landale CEO doesn’t want to share and ordered the killing of the Whitaker family. In the meantime Landale finacials has sent another hitman to kill Teresa. At a laundramat Reese tries to convince Teresa to trust but the hitman interferes. In an unsual twist for a tv-series we see the hitman really kick reese’s arse who only manages to escape with Teresa by a close margin. The hitman next tries to extract the location of Teresa by torturing the girls uncle, but he only succeeds in drawing attention from detective Carter by shooting the uncle. However, the hitman manages to locate Teresa by wiretapping her aunt and is determined to kill both her and Finch who was looking after her while Reese was putting the load on the CEO of Landale Finacials. Teresa and Finch manage to keep the hitman busy while reese rushes back to the hotel where they are hiding. In a close call he manages to shoot the hitman before he shoots Finch and Teresa.

Reese taking out the carbage

Reese taking out the carbage

After the CEO of Landale Financials is arrested we see Reese contacting detective Carter and they arrange a meeting, Reese doesn’t show up but has instead left Teresa there to be picked up, after which finch and Reese watch Carter escort Teresa away they each go their seperate ways. Finch meanwhile is seen quitting his job as ‘Harold the programmer’ as his cover was blown by Reese, it appears he wants to keep his distance from Reese. As finch walkes out of the building we see the camera pan to a memorial of finch’s partner who died in 2010….

Carter

Detective Carter

conclusion…

The epsiode is quite gritty, with the major malice that ‘the machine’ uncovers being greed. The hitman in this episode seems to have considerable resources and almost seems to become the better of Finch and Reese and thus echoeing Finch’s warning from the pilot that they probably both would end up dead. Detective Carter’s character still only appears in a few scenes and is as of yet not an engaging part of the plot, the character of detective Fusco is still the same as in the pilot though he alludes that his fellow colleagues suspect him of being corrupt. Fusco as of yet doesn’t know the connection between Reese and Finch and doesn’t even know who Reese really is.

Score; 9/10.
Viewer rating; 12.42 million. Which is very good for the episode after the pilot.

Next week’s episode is entitled ‘Mission Creep’.
