Person of Interest Logo - Jonathan Nolan starring Jim Caviezel & Michael Emerson

I am glad to see that the Person of Interest finale scheduled for Thursday evening is so hotly anticipated by viewers online. As I mentioned in last weeks review of Zero Day PoI had some problems during the middle of its second season with character being killed off just because the actors playing them had scheduling conflicts. At this moment PoI is in as special sweet spot when it comes to plot development. So much so that a part of me is sad to see it unravel in the upcoming episode and season 3.

Before all that happens there is of course season 2′s finale entitled ‘God mode’. The phrase ‘God mode’ of course refers to a special cheat code used in old-school shooters that give players unlimited ammo and health. With regards to PoI it supposedly give users of The Machine not only total control but also the ability to ask it any question they want. If that were to happen PoI would definitely put a solid foot in the sci-fi genre that has so far only been hinted at.

‘God mode’ was written by the shows creator Jonathan Nolan. Alas he won’t be directing it.

Without further ado, here is the trailer for God mode…

Here is also the official synopsis for the episode…

“God Mode” – Reese and Finch team up with surprising allies in a race to save The Machine from a familiar, nefarious entity, and the true nature of Finch’s relationship with former partner Nathan Ingram is revealed. Meanwhile, Carter tries to bring Beecher’s murderer to justice and finds herself at odds with the criminal organization HR on the second season finale of PERSON OF INTEREST, Thursday, May 9 (9:00 – 10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Carrie Preston, Amy Acker, Sarah Shahi, Brett Cullen, Jay O. Sanders and Enrico Colantoni guest star.

Root and Finch walking in Manhattan - Person of Interest - Zero Day

This is the review of Zero Day, the first to last episode of Person of Interests second season. While this season has been notably bumpier than the first I am happy to say that the show has been able to get itself back on track. At this moment the sow seems to suffer more from having to many factions and characters than too few. As such this episode excludes some of those for brevity’s sake. Then again, we don’t want every storyline to be resolved now do we?

Alicia Corwin's file - Person of Interest - Zero Day

The plot of Zero Day…

The episode starts with Finch (Michael Emerson) and Reese (Jim Caviezel) eagerly waiting for a new number. As ‘The Machine’ has been infected with a virus they haven’t gotten one in over 10 days. Reese resorts to shadowing the police in order to protect those who might get murdered, but he is mostly failing. Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson) investigates the homicide of some of Elias’s men. Officer Marconi offers her his sympathies for Cal Beecher’s murder. She of course doesn’t know he murdered him. Carter spots Reese and asks why the hasn’t been able to stop any of the murders. She further warns him that the Russian mafia is starting to make more inroads in the underworld.

In Washington DC we see the Special Council making inquires about why The Machine hasn’t been offering any numbers. He states that the entire terrorist surveillance program is in jeopardy. Afterwards Root (Amy Acker), who had been working for him as a secretary, reveals herself and interrogates the Special Council at gunpoint. Finch has in the meantime finally received a number from The Machine, a Mr. Thornhill is either the victim or the perpetrator of a murder. However, Finch can find very little about the man as he has a small digital footprint. Finch does discovers that Thornhill has bought up payphone companies in New York.

Finch (Michael Emerson) - Person of Interest

Both Finch and Reese decide to visit the company that Thornhill runs but are told that a meeting is out of the question. While there Finch sees people typing in masses of code by hand after it gets printed on paper. Root meanwhile phones Finch, she warns him that she knows that ‘The Machine’ is in danger. She further taunts Finch by asking if he has found out who Thornhill is yet. A flashback to 2010 shows Finch talking about his future with Nate Ingram (Brett Cullen). Ingram encourages him to pursue an ordinary life but warns him that revealing his past might cause a lot of problems. It is alludes that Finch is wanted by the government for sedition. When Ingram leaves to get a drink Finch notices that Ingram’s smart-phone has got texts from The Machine on it.

Back in the present Finch discovers that Thornhill has rented a taxi to take him from the airport. While Reese shadows him he notices that another man is doing the same. Reese is too late to prevent the man from using a drone to attack the taxi, but the Reese quickly discovers that Thornhill wasn’t in the taxi. Finch deduces that Thornhill doesn’t exist. The Machine made him up to make people manually reboot the system by typing in code. A flashback shows Finch proposing to Grace, he seems ready to make a change to his life but also seems to have doubt.

Sarah Shahi as Samantha Shaw - Person of Interest - Zero Day

In the present Carter discusses with Reese the problems with the mob and Beecher’s murder. Finch meanwhile receives another text from Root. As the message has come from a place close to where Grace lives Finch fears that Root might harm her. While Reese is staking out Thornhill’s apartment to find out who wanted to kill him Finch makes an emergency call saying that there is an armed man in Thornhill’s apartment. Reese manages to talk to ex-CIA hitwoman Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi) about the problems with The Machine before he is arrested.

Carter is meanwhile tipped off by Marconi about whereabouts of Beecher’s assassin. At the park near Grace’s home Root questions Finch about what happens when the timer runs out at midnight. Finch says that a reboot sequence will occur that will wipe the virus from The Machine, but The Machine will also make a phone call to a payphone to give the listener administrative rights. Root quickly calls it the Godmode. The two make an uneasy alliance against the people who want to control The Machine themselves. This group was previously identified as Decima Technologies. Root however let’s it slip that she doesn’t appreciate how Finch tried to limit The Machine abilities.

Drone attack (Decima) - Person of Interest - Zero Day

A flashback to 2010 show Finch following Nathan Ingram. In an abandoned library Finch confronts him about the numbers. Nathan admits he built-in a backdoor into The Machine. So now he also gets social security numbers of people involved in violent crimes other than terrorism. After an argument in Finch makes it clear the government would want to kill Nathan over what he has done he shuts the backdoor down. As he leaves The Machine send one more number, that of Nathan Ingram though both fail to see it.

In the present Root and Finch walk through Manhattan watching as hired thugs from Decima Technologies are guarding every payphone in sight. While in police custody Reese is visited by Samantha Shaw. She tells him that it was Finch who gave the tipoff that got him arrested. Shaw questions whether Finch had anything to do with The Machine breaking down. Reese says he will want to ask Finch that very same question. Together they manage to escape from the police station.

Michael Emerson as Harold Finch - Person of Interest - Zero Day

When Root and Finch have broken into Thornhill’s office Finch tells her he made sure The Machine couldn’t grow beyond everyone’s control. He had built a purge mechanism whereby the last 24 hours of surveillance would be wiped out as well as what The Machine had learned from it. Except the information of open case files related to terrorism and homicide. Root thinks he has harmed The Machine by building such a mechanism. Finch contends that the Thornhill operation maybe a rudimentary way for The Machine to bypass the mechanism.

Carter meanwhile finds Beecher’s assassin and kills him when he draws a gun. After on no gun is found when Internal Affairs shows up Carter appears to be set up.

Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi) - Person of Interest - Zero Day

Later on Reese and Shaw also break into Thornhill’s office only to find Greer there. He states what it is as stake, complete control of The Machine. However, he also states that it was Finch who has sold him the virus to take control in the first place. The virus that was on the laptop that Kara Stanton and Reese had been ordered to retrieve from Ordos, China.

Near midnight, Finch and Root enter the library in which they know The Machine will make its call. Cleverly Finch reroutes the call to a phone not guarded by Greer’s men. At the stroke of 12 Root takes the call. Finch also reroutes the call to Reese and Shaw, thus leaving in doubt as to whom has access to The Machine as it reboots.

Reese (Jim Caviezel) - Person of Interest - Zero Day

Conclusion…

Zero Day is an excellent episode to lead the audience into the season finale of next week. It is tightly written and in 43 minutes a lot happens. It is a shame that Fusco (Kevin Chapman) couldn’t part of it. As is, there might have been a few too many characters in this episode already. While the revelations about Finch creating the virus and Nathan Ingram trying to protect would-be murder victims are cleverly done they do lose some impact because they were already alluded to before. Carter’s hunt for Beecher’s murderer wasn’t too exciting I fear. Her worries about the Russian Mafia probably means that we can guess what new antagonists will show up next season.

Nathan Ingram (Brett Cullen) - Person of Interest

Though I am happy to see Sarah Shahi back as Samantha Shaw in this episode her role was a bit limited. In essence she is another Reese when it comes to keeping a straight face. Maybe that is one too many for this show. Shahi’s character was bit of  stand-in for Kara Stanton after the actress playing her had to cancel because of scheduling conflicts. I hope Jonathan Nolan can find more for her to do next season.

As for the overall story arc related to The Machine. I think Person of Interest is slowly developing those science-fiction roots that have for so long been hiding in plain sight. The idea that The Machine is using people to help it remember seems to be an allusion to Christopher Nolan’s movie Memento in which the protagonist suffers from the ability to store new memories. Themes such as globalization and the ever farther reaching present of the internet are also accentuated in this episode.

As said, this episode sets the pace very well for next week’s finale ‘Godmode’. It would be best to consider both episodes as one story arc. So we will have to wait until next week to form a final judgment.

Score; 8.5 / 10.

Person of Interest will be back next week with the season finale Godmode. Expect a preview of that episode this weekend and review next week.

Tracie Thoms as the person of interest with Finch and Reese - Trojan Horse

Tracie Thoms as the person of interest

This weeks episode of Person of Interest comes after a break of three weeks and unlike the previous two episodes focuses almost solely on the shows mythology. Trojan Horse is intended to set the stage for the season finale later in May by placing all the pieces on the board. A figure of speech emulated in this episode when Elias plays a game of chess with Finch and detective Beecher. The ‘number of the week’ storyline also ties in with the shows mythology and as such viewers will probably feel more involved than on past occasions. To top it all up, Sarah Shahi returns as ex-CIA hit-woman Samantha Shaw with the intention of finding Root (Amy Acker). Overall, this episode moved at a quick pace and felt as an exciting chapter to a much larger story arc.

As for the plot of Trojan Horse…

Finch (Michael Emerson) is at Riker’s Island prison playing chess with Elias (Enrico Colantoni). Elias suddenly removes some pieces from his side of the board before the game even starts. He states that it is important to learn to win from a disadvantage. Finch says that many of his associates have been removed from the prison and that whoever is organizing the transfers is bound to make a move against Elias. Finch also mentions the District Attorney and detective Szymanski that were both murdered in the previous episode.

Reese (Jim Caviezel) has meanwhile been staking out the home of the parents of agent Cole, the murdered partner of CIA agent Shaw (Sarah Shahi) in the hopes she would turn up at the place. However, Finch has a new number for him. Monica Jacobs (Tracie Thoms) who works at Rylatech has been identified as the next possible victim by ‘The Machine’. Finch infiltrates the company as an employee and closely shadows Monica. He quickly develops a rapport with her but otherwise can’t find out why she may be a target.

Elias (Enrico Colantoni) playing chess with Finch - Person of Interest Trojan Horse

Elias (Enrico Colantoni)

Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson) meanwhile investigates the death of detective Szymanski. She briefly mentions the Mayor’s aide Quinn but otherwise is suspicious of detective Cal Beecher (Sterling K. brown). Fusco says that he will tail Beecher to find out if he set up Szymanski.

Finch continuous to shadow Monica Jacobs. She finally shows strange behavior when she breaks into the R & D department to look at the laptop of a deceased employee. As Finch discusses this with Reese over the phone Reese is paid a visit by agent Shaw. Shaw admits that she wanted the parents of Cole to know he wasn’t a traitor as the governments led them to believe. As Finch tries to find out what information Jacobs obtained from the laptop he is interrupted by her personal assistant. The man seems suspicious of Finch’s presence at the company but Finch manages to convince him he is installing updates for the security system.

Fusco meanwhile questions Beecher’s involvement in HR only to be countered by him with his own dark past. Beecher does begin to question where the information came from that led to arrest of Szymanski.

Sarah Shahi as Samantha Shaw in Finch's lair - Person of Interest Trojan Horse

Sarah Shahi as Samantha Shaw

Jacobs meanwhile sets a meeting with the head of R & D, Ross Haskell, to show him what she has found. Finch hatches a plot to retrieve the information himself but Reese simply picks his pocket to speed things up. On the files are references to the deceased employee, Justin Lee, a man whose background is a complete unknown. They quickly suspect him of being involved in corporate espionage.

Beecher meanwhile questions Quinn (Clarke Peters) about the tip he got. Quinn states he got from one of Elias’s men who is down on his luck. Beecher seems pleased with this information and leaves. Quinn is joined by Patrick Simmons (Robert John Burke) who asks whether Beecher is going to be a problem.

At Rylatech Jacobs is framed for espionage and is told she is fired. The next day she shadows her personal assistant as she suspects him of being involved in her being framed. Reese follows her both and manages to intervene after the personal assistant becomes violent. Reese questions why the man was speaking Mandarin on the phone. The personal assistant is promptly shot by a sniper and Jacobs and Reese barely manage to escape.

Detective Fusco (Kevin Chapman) - Person of Interest

Detective Fusco (Kevin Chapman)

Beecher questions Elias in jail and asks whether Szymanski was truly dirty as Quinn told him he was. Elias denies it and warns Beecher that he must plan his next move very carefully. Simmons later warns Quinn of Beecher’s visit to Elias. Quinn than orders Simmons to take out his godson Beecher.

Finch meanwhile is visited by agent Samantha Shaw in his secret lair. She questions who gave the tip to the newspapers about agent Cole being an agent of the CIA investigating domestic terrorists instead of being one himself. Shaw sees a picture of Root on the wall and asks who she is (Shaw has almost been tortured by her in a previous episode). Finch says its a long story. Shaw leaves with a list of Root’s know aliases and states she intends to find her.

Reese has meanwhile taken Jacobs to a safe house where she is properly introduced to Finch. They both suspect that Justin Lee was murdered over corporate espionage and that the head of R & D, Ross Haskell, is involved. After they fail to break into Rylatech remotely they infiltrate it physically. Finch’s dog Bear manages to trap a number of security guards while Jacobs and Reese gain access to the server room. Finch discovers from a data tap planted that Rylatech routers and switches have a backdoor built into them by the Chinese to steal data from the US government.

Finch (Michael Emerson) shadowing Monica Jacobs - Person of Interest Trojan Horse

Finch (Michael Emerson) shadowing Monica Jacobs

After trying to confront Haskell with this discovery they find him murdered in his office. It transpires that the CEO of Rylatech, Baxter (Larry Bryggman), was the real perpetrator. He explains that after the Dotcom bubble burst he needed funding and thus made a pact with an unknown Chinese organization. Suddenly he is by phoned Greer (John Nolan), the man who met with Stanton in Ordos. It is revealed that he is behind the Rylatech scheme and not the Chinese government. Greer orders Baxter to commit suicide and the man promptly does so.

Detective Carter is meanwhile confronted by Fusco with evidence that Beecher was set up to give a tip that Szymanski was corrupt. Fusco convinces to keep the information a secret because there is no one to trust. Beecher meanwhile attempts to arrest a drug dealer only to be lured into a trap by HR and murdered.

The last scenes of the episode tie up the plot. Rylatech is under investigation for espionage. All routers are being removed from government servers. Finch discovers that from the information obtained from the Rylatech servers that the Chinese government got very little of the stolen information. Instead, an other organization has hoarded it. Finch says that this organization is the same as the one that has implanted a virus into ‘The Machine’. Greer is on the phone to an unknown person whom he reassures that he will neutralize the person who obtained the information from the Rylatech server.

Greer (John Nolan) - Person of Interest

Greer (John Nolan)

Conclusion.

As you may conclude from reading the episode plot outline. A lot has happened in just 43 minutes. And there are plenty of subtleties in the dialogue that remain to make two viewings advisable.

I have few problems with this episode as it is very effective at continuing multiple storylines. However, both detective Carter and Fusco do get just a tad too little time on-screen though their scenes are very intense. The re-introduction of Sarah Shahi’s character Samantha Shaw and John Nolan’s Greer is nothing short of amazing and adds a lot of momentum to the show. Person of Interest is slowly developing those sci-fi roots it desperately needs. We learned a great deal more this week about who is attacking ‘The machine’ and so a return of Amy Acker’s Root and Brett Cullen’s Nathan Ingram are a sure thing before this season is over. The death of Cal Beecher (Sterling k. Brown) was somewhat premature though, I was just starting to understand his character. As I have said in previous Person of Interest recaps is that I hope this show will have more regular characters. Much in that regard has improved but most are villains who always remain at a distance from our protagonists. I hope we will see Tracie Thoms again as Monica Jacobs. She and Finch definitely have a lot in common.

In short. A good episode to tie us over, it’s more dialogue than action but I didn’t really mind.

Score; 8 / 10.

Agent Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi) wearing a gas mask - Person of Interest - Relevance

Agent Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi) wearing a gas mask

This week’s episode of Person of Interest is special in that it is the directorial début of Jonathan Nolan. Those who watch the episode will agree it is among the best episodes yet. Personally I think it is the best PoI has to offer. If that doesn’t convince you to watch it read the plot overview below and lament what you have missed on-screen. Relevance is the 16th episode of Person of Interest’s second season, so there are only 7 episodes left.

Root (Amy Acker) listening in on Special Council - Person of Interest

Root (Amy Acker) listening in on Special Council

As for the plot of ‘Relevance’…

The episode begins with two C.I.A operatives tracking a group is Islamic militants in Berlin. After being spotted by two terrorists agent Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi) is forced to kill them. Despite the setback her colleague Cole manages to trace them to an apartment. While preparing to assassinate the terrorist Cole questions how the ‘research’ department always manages to get ‘social security’ numbers of terrorists. Shaw doesn’t question the source and states she just follows orders. The terrorists in the apartment are using cesium to make a dirty bomb so Shaw is forced to make a quick entry. While Cole introduces a paralyzing gas into the room she enters it and ceases the cesium. One terrorist manages to fight back and after shooting him Shaw removes the bullets from his corpse to hide her presence. The apartment is subsequently blown up so it will look like a bomb making effort gone wrong.

Cole

Cole – Person of Interest – Relevance

Back in New York Shaw is given her next assignment by her C.I.A handler agent Wilson. This time it seems to be a case of a domestic US terrorist and she needs to track man named James Mercer. While tracking their suspect Shaw spots Mr. Reese (Jim Caviezel) tracking Mercer but thinks nothing of it. Shaw’s colleague Cole continues to question the source of the numbers and states that he traced money paid to a Hezbollah terrorist called ‘Aquino’ back to the C.I.A and that he has a filed a complaint of possible corruption. Shaw thinks it is a bad move but otherwise keeps her attention on her present assignment. Upon entering Mercer’s apartment Shaw quickly discovers that it is set up when emails of her are found on a laptop and shots are heard outside indicating Mercer’s death. Cole is subsequently shot as unknown gunmen enter the apartment, though Shaw manages to take them out in spectacular fashion. With his dying breath Cole states that he always wanted to be her hero and eludes to a connection between their ambush and his investigation.

Shaw and Gunman jumping out of window Bourne Identity style - Person of Interest

Shaw and Gunman jumping out of window Bourne Identity style – Person of Interest

While Shaw is trying to shoot her way out of the apartment complex she encounters Mr. Reese. Despite Reese’s best efforts at convincing he is on her side she shoots him. As more gunmen are making their way up the stairs Shaw uses a gunmen she injured (by placing a flash grenade in his helmet) as a shield as she dives out of the window two stories up. While getting up unharmed she finds more gunmen disabled by Mr. Reese. Shaw also encounters agent Wilson who is talking on a mobile phone to his boss the ‘Special Council’ (Jay O. Sanders) informing him the operation is failing. Wilson manages to injure Shaw before she escapes. Wilson’s boss encourages him to find her at all cost. Root (Amy Acker) overhears this conversation as she is acting as the private secretary to the ‘Special Council’. An injured Shaw abducts a drug-dealer and uses his apartment to patch up her gun wound. More drug dealers enter the apartment after she loses consciousness but Shaw manages to shoot them when she wakes up and finds them assaulting the drug dealer she abducted.

Mr. Reese (Jim Caviezel) removing the needle - Person of Interest

Mr. Reese (Jim Caviezel) removing the needle

Shaw contacts the person Cole used to tell them of the possible corruption within the C.I.A and makes an appointment to give evidence. The Special Council is convinced that agent Wilson alone can’t make sure that Shaw is killed for what Cole uncovered and enlists the help of Hersh (Boris McGiver). Hersh states that Shaw is one of the best and that he trained her himself. Hersh states that Shaw will seek revenge for her partner and to uncover what happened during the ‘Aquino’ operation. As Shaw meets with Cole’s C.I.A contact the audience discovers that it is actually Root posing instead. Shaw hears sounds coming from the bathroom and discovers Cole’ contact gagged. Root teasers Shaw and ties her up. While preparing an ironing board for torture Root taunts her with the true origin of the ‘numbers’ and states she seeks to uncover where ‘The machine’ is located as that was what ‘Aquino’ was working on. Then more government gunmen arrive and Root escapes. The gunmen receive orders to kill Shaw and try inject her with poison but she manages to disable them. With a needle sticking out of her shoulder Shaw is in imminent danger of being poisoned. When Mr. Reese shows up he manages to persuade her to have him help her in return for not shooting him.

Shaw (Sarah Shahi) takes out government hitmen - Person of Interest

Shaw (Sarah Shahi) takes out government hitmen

Reese introduces Shaw to Finch. Finch makes her an offer. Instead of running she can continue working for him trying to stop terrorist attacks. She refuses and states she is a soldier and follows orders. Shaw finds out where the ‘Special Council’ is and follows him to an official function. The ‘Special Council’ recognizes her and enters into a casual conversation with her. He questions her motives, but she replies she never had any intention of exposing the ‘Aquino’ affair and hands him the evidence. Shaw does question why Cole had to be killed as she could have warned him off. Shaw then shoots Wilson in the head because she didn’t agree with his methods. The Special Council then allows her to leave. Hersh ambushes her with a needle at a traffic stop. He supposedly kills her but when Detective Fusco and Carter show up it is alluded that she is still alive. Leon disguised as an ambulance driver quickly drives her away as a police officer starts questioning just how Shaw died. Fusco draws away his attention by ordering him to get a coffee. While Reese and Finch are discussing what to do about Shaw they are approached by an irritable Leon. Leon states that after injecting her with the anti-dote of the poison he ended up in a struggle with her. Shaw then approaches Leon, Reese and Finch and aims a gun at them. Reese berates Leon for not patting her down. After Shaw takes their mobile phones Finch urges her to reconsider his offer, but Shaw drives away with the ambulance instead.

Ken Leung (Leon) - Person of Interest

Ken Leung (Leon)

Conclusion…

Relevance is Person of Interest’s best episode so far. The season and half of episode’s that have aired until now feel comparatively more like a test run. Relevance has the feel of a pilot episode. And as Jonathan Nolan’s directorial début it can be best described as Person of Interest’s second pilot. The only worry I have is that so many future episode’s won’t live up tot he quality of this one. This episode also feels a lot like an episode of ‘Lost’ due to the clever use of drama. As PoI is a ’Bad Robot Production’ show you must not be too surprised by that.

Agent Samantha Shaw shoots Wilson - Person of Interest - Relevance

Agent Samantha Shaw shoots Wilson

Sarah Shahi’s character introduction is so effective that it exposes the awkward fact that PoI concentrated too much on Mr. Finch and Mr. Reese. Some bloggers have labeled Sarah’s appearance on PoI as a potential back-door pilot for another series. I don’t see that happening just yet  but it is high-praise. Sarah Shaw’s character Samantha Shahi is probably the best female action protagonist I have seen so far. Shaw isn’t a woman who uses her impossible good looks to unrealistically deceive men or win impossible fights against men twice her weight. Her character is carefully honed to the Person of Interest universe and as such it will be a delight to see more of her as either co-protagonist or antagonist.

This episode also brings a sense of realism as it alludes to many spy-craft methods and past events. I hope that will continue as well. The scene with the introduction of gas into the terrorist apartment felt like something out of a Frederick Forsyth novel. The scene were Shaw places a stun grenade under gas helmet of gunman felt like something from Half-life 2. Overall this episode introduced new elements while maintaining clever homages to other works.

The re-introduction of Leon Tao (Ken Leung) also promises to yield a lot more divergent storylines. Placing Detective Carter and Fusco in the pasture for a week is not negative thing per se, as long as they are back next week.

The only slight that I could think of with this episode is the Shaw’s poisoning by Hersh in the last act. If the poison kills within 4 minutes than how did anyone such as Reese or Leon manage to introduce the antidote? The timeline is a bit screwy, something that was noticed by many fans.

The episode was written by Amanda Segel and Joanthan Nolan. I do hope they will team again in the future.

Score; 10 / 10. Best episode of Person of Interest so far!

Song of week; Future Starts Slow by The Kills.

As has become tradition with PoI is that every episode has a fantastic track by a established band. Go ahead and listen.

Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi)

Feb 212013

As I have mentioned a few times before in the last couple of week I think Person of Interest is a bit lost (no pun intended). What I means is… the show’s mythology seems to remain even a mystery to its creative staff. After the surprise death of a number of a antagonists (Donnelly, Snow and Stanton) PoI seemed destined for a radical turnaround. And tonight’s episode Relevance seems to promise just that. The episode is the directorial début of Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher Nolan) and will see the introduction of a new uber villain played by Sarah Shahi.

Here is the preview trailer of ‘Relevance’…

I am glad they once again brought back the fact that bullets really are dangerous to people. I haven’t seen that since the end of season 1. What is weird is the reference made by Finch to Sarah Shahi’s character with regards that they work for the same team. Does this mean her character is really a villain? All the interviews with Sarah Shahi seem to indicate so.

Mr Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Finch check the foyer- Person of Interest – Booked Solid

The Person of Interest episodes ‘Prisoner’s Dilemma’ and ‘Dead Reckoning’ were so far the two only hard-core mythology episodes besides the season première, unfortunately at the end of the two episodes we had lost CIA agents Kara Stanton and Snow as well as FBI agent Donnelly. This drained the series of some important blood and put some story arcs in serious jeopardy. I was now looking for an episode that could reestablish the mythology for season 2 and with this episode entitled ‘Booked Solid’ I got more than I bargained for.

Mia Maestro as the maid - Person of Interest

Mia Maestro as the maid – Person of Interest

As for the plot of ‘Booked Solid’…

Reese and Finch work undercover in a hotel to protect a maid (Mia Maestro) who escaped the war in Kosovo. With help from Zoe, who is also working in the hotel, Reese follows Mia as a bellhop while Finch works as a concierge. Finch finds out that Mia is hiding her true identity, and they realize she is being followed by a hit squad. John discovers she is refusing to coöperate with a reporter attempting to uncover a Serbian general’s war crimes. When the reporter is murdered, she decides to send a DVD with evidence to the authorities.

Fusco escorts Mia to the station, where one last hit man attempts to kill her, before being shot by Carter. Carter receives an offer to join the FBI, and is asked to take a polygraph, but is rejected because she has had contact with a fellow officer they claim has a record of Internal Affairs investigations. Hirsh follows Reese to the hotel on the orders of the Special Counsel, intending to kill him, but Reese injures Hersch and walks away; the Special Counsel’s assistant, Miss May, is shown to be Root. Conclusion…

‘Booked Solid’ was meant as a transitioning episode in that it combines a procedural plot interspersed with side-plots that deal with the show’s mythology. Luckily for viewers both aspects are very well handled and are even too some degree interrelated. Which is not what ordinarily happens. The return of the ‘Special Council’ who handles all matters relating to ‘the machine’ for the government and his hit-man Hersh (Boris McGiver) a few episodes ago could only mean that Root (Amy Acker) would also show up sooner or later. Of the two main threads throughout the mythology I so far found the Root/Special Council storyline less interesting than the CIA/Stanton storyline that was killed off two weeks ago.

Detective Fusco (Kevin Chapman) finds something smelly - Person of Interest

Detective Fusco (Kevin Chapman) finds something smelly – Person of Interest

So far it feels too muddled by characters with obscure motivations. Only Amy Acker’s performance of Root as the ultimate femme-fatale stands out. That said, her interest in Finch is still a bit vague. There has to be more than just Finch being the designer of ‘The Machine’. No doubt we will soon know. In short, this episode of Person of Interest managed to put the show back on track after several important characters were killed off for little reason.

Pros; Kevin Chapman as Detective Fusco.

Cons; where do all those Serb hit-men come from?

Score; 8 / 10.

Person of Interest will be back next week with the episode ‘Relevance’.

Next Thursday Person of Interest will be back with the episode ‘Booked Solid’. Now that season 2 has been in full swing for a while it is time to look back. Has Person of Interest managed to live up to expectations? For the most part that answer is YES but there are plenty of gripes to be had with its second season. For one it took a while for the shows mythology to be brought to center-stage. Instead the procedural aspects of the show was starting to affect its quality. Now that the mythology is indeed back in the forefront one can criticize the rather ad hoc nature of plot development. Not only has the hacker Root been missing for like the length of the bible but other villains have been killed off in quick succession (most notably: agent Donnelly,  Kara Stanton and Mark Snow). Rumor has it that scheduling conflicts were part of the reason these characters were knocked off. As a fan of the show I can say I was not amused. Just when things got interesting we are back at square one. The revelation that Finch may have something to do with the laptop falling into Chinese hands which required Mr. Reese to travel with Kara Stanton to Ordos to retrieve it was a weak sweetener.

However, the show goes on. Let’s hope the creative staff can manage to find their way through these ‘setbacks’. ‘Booked Solid’ seems to be more of a procedural episode, but there have been gems with those in the past. By the looks of it our favorite sidekick Zoe (Paige Turco) will also return.

It almost seems like yesterday that the first season of Person of Interest stopped airing. Perhaps the fact that Person of Interest spanned 23 episodes in its first season while maintaining a very high level of quality that it seems that just a short while ago Finch was kidnapped. The first epsiode of the second season of Perosn of Interest will air next Thursday September 27th.

Now, as for The Contingency, below is the press release…

“The Contingency” – With Finch missing – kidnapped by his hacker nemesis, Root, in last season’s finale cliffhanger – Reese enlists Detectives Carter and Fusco to get his friend back, on the second season première of PERSON OF INTEREST, Thursday, Sept. 27 (9:00 – 10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  Meanwhile, The Machine never sleeps, disseminating a new number to Reese.  Ken Leung (“Lost”) guest stars as the latest POI, and Amy Acker (“Dollhouse,” “Angel”) reprises her role as Root.

Person of Interest - Michael Emerson as Harold Finch

Finally after 23 episodes has the incredible first season of Person of Interest come to a finish, next to series like Nikita and The Walking Dead there is no series like it and it certainly is the best new series of this moment. This show fantastic because just like series such as 24 and Nikita it is able to deliver high quality production along with daring plot development, the shows creators are certainly not afraid to pull some punches. Jim Caviezel’s Reese and Michael Emerson’s Finch instantly captivated audiences by their likability while their coöperation is entertaining because of their opposing personalities.

Person of Interest - Amy Acker as Root

As for the plot so far, well, Finch and his partner Nathan Ingram created an artificial intelligence to watch every digital communication for the NSA, while the NSA is only interested in terrorist Finch was also interested in the threats ordinary people faced. After his partners death he enlists the help of Reese to rescue people that are threatened.

Person of Interest - Corrupt Cops

As for the plot of this episode…

Reese becomes trapped with his POI in a heavily monitored part of the city and must rely on Finch, Carter and Fusco’s help. Reese is set the task of protecting the latest victim, psychologist Caroline Turing (Amy Acker) who is unknowingly treating the person who has hired HR to kill her. Finch brings in Zoe Morgan to help find the suspect while Reese protects Turing. After stopping the first attack, Reese takes Turing to a hotel but are found by not only HR but the FBI, who are hunting for Reese.

person of Interest - Elizabeth Marvel as Alicia Corwin

Carter suspects Fusco is working for HR but learns he is working with Reese as well. Alicia Corwin, who has been following Finch, interrogates him but is killed by Turing. She reveals herself as “Root” and Finch realizes that she was the one who hired HR. She forces Finch to drive off. Reese finds Alicia’s dead body, while Carter and Fusco anonymously reveal HR members to the FBI. Reese discovers Finch is missing and talks to the machine, a public phone call rings and Reese picks up the phone as the episode ends.

Person of Interest - Jim Caviezel as Reese

Review..

As I said before this show just keep on reinventing itself, that is also true for this episode which is very tightly written (almost like 24). The return of ‘Root’ caught me off guard and strangely has led me to believe she may be working with Elias. The fact that Carter and Fusco now know of each other is something of a blessing because it was turning into something like a running gag, the only slight i have with POI at this moment is the FBI agent names Donnelly, he replaced Carter with chasing after Reese and just like Carter the whole reminds me too much of the colonel Lynch/Decker thing from the A-team. Here is hoping POI will overcome these slights for its second season which I expect would air in September. It certainly has proved what quality TV means compared to canceled shows like Alcatraz which had potential but was ultimately doomed by sloppy execution.

Score; 9.5 / 10.

This ninth episode of Person of interest is entitled ’Get Carter’ and refers as a pun to both the Michael Cain movie and the fact that all the villains in this story are gunning for Detective Carter (Taraji Henson).

Detective Carter - Taraji P. Henson

Person of Interest meanwhile seems to continue its run of good ratings and such is almost guaranteed to get a second season, the only gripe I have with the series is that the sci-fi elements have almost completely disappeared. After the pilot and the second episode we have seen no background information on ‘The Machine’ and it is in fact rarely mentioned. I know that in time the issue will take center stage and that at first this series needs to develop itself and not alienate the audience but slowly it is becoming an issue.

Harold Finch - Michael Emerson

Now as for this weeks episode. It is clear from the title that it centers around Detective Carter. Early on in the episode we learn that she has a job as army interrogator in Iraq around 2004 and that she has a teen son who is on college. Despite being a homicide detective she also takes an interest in a woman who is repeatedly being physically abused by her husband Kovach. Carter is on the trail of hispanic arms smuggler called Hector after the latter murders an eye-witness. Quickly Finch (michael Emerson) learns that Carter is to become a victim and sets Reese (James Caviezel) and Fusco after her to learn who is the perpetrator.

Person of Interest - Elias

Fusco begins to think there might be a cop who also holds a grudge against her and asks around. It would seem all the dirty cops in the police force know that Carter is by Elias, this complicates matters for Reese who now has to look for suspects in every corner. One of Carters informants tells her that Hector was near the site of the murder of the eye-witness and thus Carter tries to wheel him, but not before Reese takes the opportunity to steal a car from Hector. Hector however has disappeared and Reese thinks he is an unlikely suspect to murder Carter. Elias meanwhile alludes to Carter’s impending death by sending her flowers with a small obituary. Carter learns that Hector is hold up in a warehouse and that the business he is in is selling guns. Reese and Fusco go along with her (Reese uses the cover of a SWAT from being recognised) to make sure she doesn’t come in harm’s way.

After Hector is placed under arrest Carter thinks she is safe, but Reese calls her and convinces her otherwise. After her informant tries to kill her on Elias’s orders Reese manages to intervene and kill the informant. Reese later on ambushes a captain in the police force who is high up in the ‘dirty cop chain of command’ and Reese gives him an ultimatum, either let go of Carter or Reese will bury everybody.

John Reese - Jim Caviezel

The episode ends with Carter and her son Taylor sitting in a diner while Reese observes. As Reese drives off Carter knows she is watched but doesn’t seem to mind.

Conclusion…

This episode of Person of Interest was very good, but not great. There was no doubt in the way the plot would develop and though there were tense moments there also plenty of dull scenes. This episode suffered like the previous one from an ambitious set-up that the shows writers simply couldn’t fulfill.

The fact that detective Carter is now very much part of the team is one problem that is fixed. Detective Fusco’s cover seems to work well as I feared he might only be capable of interfering in a limited way. The dirty cop angle that shows the NYPD in less than positive way is ice-cold, it got even me to breathe twice…

Detective Fusco - Kevin Chapman

Person of Interest now seems slowly march towards the season finale and as such the storyline surrounding its mythology should become more important.

Score; 8 / 10.

Viewer Rating; 12.66 million. This number is just brilliant. It’s the highest yet since the series pilot.

The way Person of Interest seems to avoid its sci-fi elements does have me a little worried about Alcatraz, the upcoming series involving
