Ender's Game movie banner - Asa Butterfield and Abigail Breslin

A few weeks ago I gave a small preview on Ender’s Game after several still pictures were released. Last week a teaser trailer was released but today we are also the happy recipient of the full trailer for Ender’s Game. The movie is scheduled for a November 1st release in the US and will star Asa Butterfield (Hugo) as Ender Wiggin, Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff and Hailee Steinfeld as Petra Arkanian. Last week along with the teaser trailer a still was released showing Ben Kingsley as Mazer Rackham. After his appearance in Iron Man 3 I think it is a good idea that he remains to do such high profile movies. Ben Kingsley also visually seems to resemble the Mazer Rackham from the novel very closely. And to think that Will Smith was once mulled for the part!

Well, without further ado. Here is the trailer for Ender’s Game.

Now that is what I call a trailer. If you want to see it in cinema’s than buy a ticket for Star Trek Into Darkness as it will be shown with that movie.

The song heard in the trailer is of course from Tron Legacy!. It is quickly becoming the standard fare for trailer and sneak peeks.

Below is that still picture of Ben Kingsley that I owed you…

This November the long-awaited Ender’s Game movie will finally reach the cinemas. For fans of the sci-fi novel from Orson Scott Card it means that the Bataan death March that lasted 28 years is finally over. The movie has been in development hell for several reasons. For a start it was thought that the adult theme of the novel excluded child actors as well the youth demographics for a potential audience. The other reason was that Orson Scott Card has some unpopular hardline ideas on homosexuality that is considered problematic by the studio’s.

Finally, Ender’s Game is moving forward. Probably riding the wave of success left by The Hunger Games movie (If Jennifer Lawrence can kill people than so can anyone else). As for Orson Scott Card, he will probably not be invited to the première…

As for Ender’s Game. The movie focuses on a young brat called Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) who is enrolled in a officer program in distant future. Humanity is at war with an alien race and Ender is one of the first recruits intended to take on the enemy in a future showdown. He will be trained by Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) while making a friend of Petra Arkanian (Hailee Steinfeld) and an enemy for life in Bonzo (Moises Arias).

Ender’s Game is directed by Gavin Hood whose only credentials of note is a X-Men movie from some years back. Ooh, he also got an an Academy award for the movie Tsotsi. Ender’s Game is scheduled for a November 1st release and is produced by Lionsgate films (Lord of the Rings).

Despite what has been said about Orson Scott Card as a person. I think he is a wonderful writer. I personally recommend ‘How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy‘ as an excellent starting point on writing fiction.

While some still pictures of the set have already been released we now also have the first Ender’s game poster. Which you can view below.

So, what now? You just might be thinking. Has George Lucas changed his mind on whether Greedo shoots first or was it definitely Han Solo. Or has it been confirmed that one of the spin-off Star Wars movies is going to be a mash-up with other J.J. Abrams franchises such as Mission Impossible and Star Trek.

No. Someone uncovered a new image of Carrie Fisher as slave Leia wearing the infamous metal bikini she wore in Star Wars Return of the Jedi. The image uncovered was taken circa 1983 on a beach in California. The idea of slave Leia has both its supporters and detractors. Personally I think Mrs. Fisher was stunningly beautiful wearing the metal bikini but I do believe movies should never be so shallow as to rely on such cheap gimmicks to reign in more receipts. I think the quality of the original trilogy gives credibility to this idea, as opposed to Natalie Portman’s rather blatant attempt in Episode 2 to sex things up.

Ever since George Lucas has sold LucasFilm to Disney the internet has gone Star Wars crazy. What is weird is that no one ever seems to mention the prequel trilogy anymore. Yesterday I came across just one article on www.scificool.com that only contained about a dozen pictures of Natalie Portman as Queen Amidala. All the other articles question whether either Harrison Ford or Mark Hamill will be reprising their roles in Star Wars Episode 7. Carrie Fisher has of course publicly stated she wants to be back, but let’s face it…. Neither she nor Mark Hamill have aged well.

The irony of the slave Leia picture is of course that Wired ran an article condemning what it considered the sexism that is pervasive in Hollywood movies. Female roles in movies have to walk a tight rope between being seen as ‘enabled’ by allowing their sexuality to come to the forefront and blatant sexist exploitation. You can read the Wired article by clicking the following link (http://www.wired.com/underwire/2013/02/opinion-star-wars-females-media/).

Another irony is that Carrie Fisher became such a 80′s sex symbol because of her own doing. She regarded her roles in Star Wars A  New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back as being similar to an on-screen nun. The discussion about the slave Leia pictures will probably not end soon. In fact it seems to be a recurring theme in Carrie Fisher’s and William Shatner’s pseudo feud. Mrs. Fisher suggests William Shatner subconsciously desires to wear the slave Leia metal bikini himself. Now that is one feud I hope will never be settled!

IGN.com has an interesting story, apparently Ridley Scott is working towards Blade Runner 2, a sequel to the 1982 original starring Harrison Ford. Though rumors first started to seem about two years ago on a Blade runner sequel things took a turn when Prometheus was announced, the long awaited prequel to Alien. Now it would appear Blade Runner 2 is back in the works. I still think the original is the best sci-fi movie ever so my expectations for the sequel are mixed. On the one hand I would very much like to see Ridley’s hand in a sublime sequel but on the other hand the original could be polluted by a weak sequel.

In the coming weeks expect to hear more rumors about Blade Runner 2, which will by then include a in-depth commentary on how a sequel can succeed to eclipse the original. Prometheus will of course also be discussed as will be the news on Mute (Duncan Jones’s cyberpunk movie).

Perhaps they will call this time, the golden age of neo-cypberpunk.
