Well, we are almost there. Next Monday on the 16th Eureka will be back for the last time with one more episode entitled ‘Just Another day’. Yet again, it seems that sci-fi fans have to take it in the gut as a favorite tv-show ends because of declining ratings. For me it isn’t difficult to see why Eureka failed. For the most part it didn’t seem to have an overall story arc to keep all five season connected. Ever since the shows’s humble beginnings in 2006 we essentially have been watching something like 7 different season (if we split up season 3 & 4) and they weren’t all of the same calibre either. Season 5 was for a bit of  let down which is partly why I am kind of looking forward to the future. Eureka has given viewers a great many fond memories, its abstract humor and characters combined with a different take on science gave this series sparks during its first three seasons. Things went downhill from then on with the cast turnover that occurred between season 3 and 4 (Jim Taggart, Nathan Stark and Zoe Carter), after which the series didn’t seem to dare all that much, though we were strangely blessed a few time with seeing Salli Richardson-Whitfield walking around in lingerie. Those things just like a few others were just attempts to not lose the already dwindling viewership. My overall verdict for this series is that it is OK, above average for sure, but it never managed to live up to the rather excellent pilot that started it all.

Now, we have got one more episode left, maybe it will be able to tie up this show proper as fans would want.

Here is the synopsis…

After the DOD shuts Eureka down, Zoe comes to visit before her graduation, and the entire town is threatened to be ripped apart by unstable wormholes unless Carter stops them.

Well, that is not much, but it gives an impression at least.

Here is the promo trailer…

And here are the promo stills, they include set picture of the cast after the final shot had been taken…

Dr Blake Eureka

Yes, its true, Eureka is back a little earlier in the year than normal for its fifth and last season. Sadly the trend towards wrestling ghost shows at the Syfy channel continues.

As for the first episode of season 5, its entitled Lost and information is so far hard to find, which doesn’t bode well for the ratings (And Syfy channel wonders why).

However, courtesy of SciFiStorm.org I have managed to get a small synopsis.

As Eureka’s thrilling fifth and last season kicks off, the town is reeling after the Astraeus and her crew mysteriously vanished just before their planned launch to Titan. When they finally crash-land, Allison and the crew members are shocked to find themselves back in Eureka – and that they’ve been missing for four years. As the town copes with the shocking personal changes that have happened during their long absence, Sheriff Carter and Henry try to uncover the truth about the forces behind the crew’s bizarre disappearance – with deadly results.

Strangely the synopsis doesn’t square with season 4′s finale when Dr Blake managed to launch herself to Titan by accident, I guess we will learn more about all that on monday.

Here is a small preview clip of season 5.

EUREKA-Liftoff-Season-4-Episode-11-5-550x366

In a press release Syfy Channel has announced its spring line-up of shows, this includes Eureka which will then première its fifth and final season. As you might expect the rest of the line-up is complete rubbish, ranging from wrestling, reality-horror shows and combinations of both!

Its sad to think that the only shows that really matters on Syfy channel is about to end. As for Alphas and Warehouse 13, expect those back in the summer.

Here is part of the press release…

EUREKA (SEASON 5 PREMIERE) Premieres Monday, April 16 at 9PM – Eureka’s fifth and final season culminates with an exciting series conclusion that will complete the journey of the residents of the unique little town of Eureka. As the thrilling final season kicks off, the town is reeling after the Astraeus and her crew mysteriously vanished just before their planned launch to Titan. When they finally crash land, Allison and the crewmembers are shocked to find themselves back in Eureka – and that they’ve been missing for four years. As the town copes with the shocking personal changes that have happened during their long absence, Sheriff Carter and Henry try to uncover the truth about the forces behind the crew’s bizarre disappearance — with deadly results. The last episode of the fourth season of Eureka is a fact, with just one more season to go it was interesting to see if the show creators would move the show in a new direction. This episode did see the launch of Astraeus mission so that still seems to be on for the next season.

The episode starts with the final preparations for the mission being made, president Obama is set to visit GD headquarters only his advance teams has its limo sliced into two by an unknown power source. It is for Sherrif Carter to find the source of the problem, which end up being wormholes of all things. along his way he also meets up with taggert and he squares his relationship with Dr Blake by offering her to move into his place (which she accepts). In the end Carter manages to extinguish the wormholes. And just when seantor Wen comes along for the final countdown do thinsg go completely haywire, suddenly the Astraeus goes into launch mode and is sent into space along with Dr Allsion Blake. And that were the episode ends, of course I have left out some details… like Lupo’s sudden solo out of eureka and such but then you can go and watch the episode yourselfs.

The episode strangely reminds me of the Eureka pilot… and in a good way, as though this show is coming full circle… the special effects are definitely better than some previous episodes.

Score; 9/10.
Viewers; 1.87 million, which is below par and worrisome for a season finale.

This weeks episode Eureka sees Fargo and Holly making preparations for the trip to Titan, however, due to the level of mutual distraction they keep bungling their tests and deside the best way to keep working together is to ‘to eat their dessert’ which is a pseudonym for getting to third base just in case you were still wondering. However, Fargo, who should be delighted, seems to have second thoughts as he is wary of missing out the steps before eating dessert and sees him apply for advice from non-other than Zane.

Zane meanwhile has been given a repreive of his crimes from senator Wen and canleave Eureka whenever he wants to, but does he? During the last several episode we sam him getting back together with Lupo and suddenly things seems less than clear in this episode despite the two of them ‘eating dessert’ whenever they can.

Henry and Grace have decided to say their weddign vows again, with Lupo given some very odd advice which I havent been able to guess why? Henry is still having some second guesses about the wedding and this weeks disaster of the week makes for some interesting dialogue tie-ins.

Carter and Blake get a visit from a bureaucrat from the DOD who is to inquire whether there relationship is appropriate or not, as the episode progresses we their relationship in action and it seems to be working just fine, but not accoding to the bureaucrat’s advice.

In the end the disaster of the week (Titan’s atmospehere brought to Eureka) is solved by venting all the gasses into a botanical garden. The problems facing our Eureka characters also seem for the most part solved with Fargo and Holly deciding upon going steady and so do Zane and Lupo.

The viewer number’s for eureka seem to slipping still somewhat, with just 2.03 million viewers in the US left, but then again that could be a Syfy channel problem. Fans are still reeling over the sudden cancelation of season 6 and with the other shows also not performing well that just leaves ‘Ghost hunters’ and wrestling…. can Syfu sink any lower, wait until ‘Person of interest’ and ‘Alcatraz’ hit the air.

Score; 8.5/10

Eureka next week preview!

Aug 192011

This weeks episode we saw another good attempt from the producers to force the mythology of Eureka full ahead. With the cancellation season 6 I can’t see that changing until the bitter season 5 end. Last weeks episode saw Dr Blake being mind-controlled by our former hot hostess Dr. Beverly Barlow. This week Dr. Blake is back at GD looking to resume her work as head of GD. However, Senator Wen is in town and she like most people (including Carter) can’t see Blake resuming her work just like that. This episode we thus see her working on the aftermath of last week’s episode and desperately trying to prove herself. Senator Wen’s character (played by Ming-Na from Stargate Universe) appears in this episode as more amiable to the Eureka characters though still tough and quite frankly hard-boiled. She decides against allowing Dr. Blake to resume as head and for the time being looks after GD herself, where she makes a few changes.

One brilliant quite from the episode is in a scene where Sheriff Carter asks what he should do after he enters a meeting in Senator Wen’s office. She reply’s, “Just stand there and look pretty” is just brilliantly delivered with a deadpan style.

As the episode progresses Sheriff Carter finds out that GD is under attack from mechanical Mites that were designed to create the hull of the ship intended for the Astraeus mission by eating tungsten. However it transpires Zane programmed them which means they do their job just a little too well and now are eating every bit of tungsten at GD and thus may cause the collapse of the complex.

As all this progresses the people that are being tested for the Astraeus mission to Titan find themselves tested by being put together in a small chamber and subjected to petty torment. Thus we see Dr. Fargo, Dr. Parrish, Lupo, Zane and Dr. Martin trying to both work together and sabotage each others efforts all at the same time. Dr. Parrish’s effort (played by Whill Wheaton) are quickly becoming an internet favorite though one questions how long the writers of this show can keep coming up with new sneering remarks before they come old, and I admit… perhaps that moment has already passed.

In the end Carter restores faith back into Dr. Blake who then manages to guide Carter to save the day by destroying the Mites, the episode thus brings us back to the things as they are of before the Beverly take-over of Dr. Blake and one might wonder what the entire point was of this short story arc.

Score; 8.5/10.

Next weeks episode ‘Clash of Titans’ preview!

Aug 102011

This weeks episode of Eureka entitled ‘Omega girls’ focused mostly on pushing forward the Eureka mythology. It tries to set in cement the changes that have occurred after our gang moved forward in time.

Allison Blake - Salli Richardson nude

The episode starts of funnily enough with Dr Blake (under the control of Beverly) sending the kids away to her mom’s so they won’t be a bother and afterward taking her time to pick her garment of the day while being nude (not that you see much). That the episode focusses mostly on Blake/Beverly can partly be inferred by the fact that it is Salli Richardson (who plays Allison Blake) is the director of this episode. As part of Beverly’s plot Blake will today take up the role of Acting Director of GD from Fargo. However, Carter quickly finds out that Allison hasn’t been acting herself lately and with the help of Zane and Henry uncovers the truth about Beverly’s mind control of Allison. Just as Carter confronts Blake/Beverly she sets of a stunning device that incapacitates everybody in Eureka leaving her with a level playing field.

One of the side plots of this episode is the return of Zoe Carter. Her dad can’t pick her up from the airport so Lupo volunteers. Things quickly come to a head when Zoe learns of the full implication of Lupo dating Zane. Obviously Lupo can’t say why she is attracted to Zane, especially after the alternate Lupo discouraged Zoe from getting into a relationship with Zane. This she can’t tell Zoe. After the two make it back to town they discover all the inhabitants unconscious. It was glad to see the production didn’t take half measures with showing the full implications of everybody in Eureka dropping to the floor.

Zoe finds her father and they take him to GD to run medical scans. After getting there they find Henry and Zane laying unconscious behind a computer terminal with a scan of Allison’s head displayed on it. Not after Lupo get’s captured by bad guys brought in by Beverly do they realise she has been compromised. The plot thickens when Beverly tries to steal every GD idea ever created from the computer mainframe. However Zoe on her manages to take out the two bad guys Beverly brought with her (with the help of a rather cute robot) and after she frees Lupo from her own jail they manage to stun Blake/Beverly.

In the epilogue Zoe once again starts asking awkward questions about the Zane/Lupo relation, however, her father buds in and the last take shows him telling her about his time travelling adventures.

Score; 9/10.

Eureka cancelled.

Sadly, it is true. Only last week both a full season 5 and a short season 6 were announced as a go. Unfortunately, the short season 6 was cancelled. Not only are declining ratings to blame but probably also actors not willing to renew their contracts. The creative staff most like wishes to move on as well as this show has been on the air since 2006. Personally I think this move could do wonders to make sure the quality of season 5.

Next weeks episode preview. It called ‘Of Mites and Men’.

Another week, another Eureka review! This week we see our crew train for the Astraeus mission to Titan, it is still too early to say whether the show will ever go to Titan but it seems suddenly that it has a goal to work towards to. Despite the fact that almost everybody is training for the mission (Blake, Lupo, Zane, Fargo, Henry and his wife) it is certainly not clear if anyone can go. In the meantime Carter has got his handful when a supposedly normal case of ‘bank robbery’ turns out into a suspected case where the entire ‘bank’ has been physically robbed. Quickly enough he manages to locate it and finds it floating in the air along with his own car! The cause is a ‘Higgs field disruptor’ which doctor Parrish (Whill Wheaton) tried to keep save with in the banks fault along with some other Eureka ‘graduate’s antimatter. Put together they disrupt gravity and make heavy objects float harmlessly to the tune of Eureka into the air. In the end Carter manages to put everything back together (not before some outrageous moves on his part).

In the meantime Blake’s condition is worsening, from the last two episodes we know she was implanted with nanobots that kinda make her fuzzy headed, now things take a turn for the worst when she suddenly starts to have memory lapses and things seemingly get done without any physical input on her part. This begs the questions whether the entire episode is just part of her imagination especially when she is later revealed to be strapped onto a table with Carter looking on and being sinister!.

This episode was good, but it could have been better. We see many storylines moving forward while Carter has to fix his usual problem of the week. It is in fact somewhat difficult to follow all the storylines especially that of Zane and Lupo who two episodes previous decided to hook up again but now show little evidence of affection.

Fargo’s attempts to get into a relation with Dr Holly Martin are as comical as it was the last few episodes especially with the troublesome mingling of Wheaton’s character, yet at the same time little progress is being made in their relationship and this banter between the three could quickly grow stale in the forthcoming episodes.

Score; 8.5/10.

Eureka is back!

Finally season 4 can continue. Since season 4 took the series in a new direction we have been delighted with mostly superb episodes after season 2 and 3 took a slow march downwards. The first thing noticeable in this episode are the special effects, lets hope will stay as good as they were.

The storyline revolves around the accidental launch of a Mercury era space capsule that is tested for an experimental FTL drive, only downside is that both Fargo and Zane are in it. After nearly blowing it out of the sky the gang on the ground have to rescue the pair with the infamous ‘goaly thingy’ but only if they are able to communicate with the capsule that has no radio or anything else for that matter. After a run in with the ISS Fargo and Zane finally seem to be able to activate the FTL drive and be caught back to earth, but only after Fargo makes a slip of the tongue about the Lupo.

The episode itself seems mostly intent on bridging storylines together for the rest of season, but for once that doesn’t matter as the dialog in this episode is just superb. The Lupo/Zane thingy slowly further unravels as Zane seems to come to some understanding about his earlier relationship with the Lupo from an alternate timeline. Alas the tension between Carter and Blake is the only major downside of this episode as it seems too contrived. Henry makes a return and together with Fargo seems hellbent on being the quirky nerds from the beginning of this show so many years ago.

Overall this episode seems an excellent start to the rest of the season.

Score; 9/10.
