Continuum is going on a brief hiatus and won’t be back until July 8th for the episode entitled Time’s Up.

Here is the episodes synopsis…

Kagame pursues the first step of his new agenda – winning over the intellectuals and the grassroots dissenters. When Liber8 kidnaps the CEO of a major corporation, Kiera and Carlos must race an actual ticking clock to save the CEO from public punishment.

And here is the promo trailer…

The trailer clearly shows that Continuum continues to explore it grittier side with Liber8 doing what they do best, terrorism. This show is blessed with the fact that it has multiple villains, besides some of the lesser known members of Liber8 such as Sonya, Garza and Lucas there is Curtis, Travis and of course Kagame. Now, Kagame’s character has depth and a history that shows he is not carved out of wood villain but is more of misguided intellectual. The of course there is also Kellog, who seems to be blend between Elim Garak from DS9 and Ben Linus from Lost.

Another piece of good news is that the shows ratings have picked up, they now stand at just a little bit under 500.000 and that is just in Canada!

Enjoy the other still…

total-recall-remake-poster

As the summer holiday approaches it would seem that we are flooded with movie trailers, after Dredd and Looper we now have a second ‘official’ trailer for Total Recall starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale. This second trailer seems like an improvement over the first which to me showed a plot that differed too much from the 1990 original made by paul Verhoeven. As an interesting sidenote, it would seem that the team behind this remake is also going to remake that other Verhoeven sci-fi classic, Starship Trooper. Sadly enough it was confirmed that both the new Total Recall and that remake  of Starship Troopers would have almost no nudity or gore because they want the highest possible rating. To me that sounds more milking a franchise. With a topic such as sci-fi it is often difficult to keep a sense of realism, gore and nudity if done artistically can help with that. Afterall, what would Blade Runner be without Zhora’s boobs and Leon’s exploding head?

Here is the official new trailer…

And for those who haven’t a clue what this remake is all about…

Here is the movies official synopsis…

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

And if you don’t know already, Total Recall will hit the cinema’s August 8th.

Looper - Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Bruce Willis

This September we will be getting another sci-fi flick, as though we haven’t been indulged enough by then (Dredd, Prometheus and Total Recall).

Here, we have the official international trailer for Looper which basically shows the same footage as the previous teasers and trailers but seems a little bit more polished. Unfortunately, Looper does seem to be a movie whose premise rests upon just one sci-fi device on which the entire plot is built upon, in this case a limited form of time-travel. Movies of such a type are rarely great and usually end up on the mediocre pile (Surrogates, The Adjustment Bureau, The 6th Day and I, Robot to just name a few). These movies try to appeal to viewers sympathies for about two hours before they out stay their welcome. I hope Looper will be different, but I fear it won’t.

Looper stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt and is set for a September 28th release. The director is Rian Johnson who has absolutely no notable work in the science fiction genre whatsoever. Maybe he will surprise us then?

Blade Runner - Harrison Ford as Deckard

Today, 30 years ago, Blade Runner hit the cinema’s in the US, though its performance at the box-office was lackluster it certainly shined as an example of thought-provoking science fiction. Ridley Scott’s movie had a difficult start in production. The movie is of course based Philip K. Dick’s ‘Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep’, after its publication there was much interest in producing a film but none really managed to ferment. Strangely enough Gregory Peck had a role in keeping the project alive before it was optioned by producer Michael Deely who tasked Hampton Fancher to write a script, after many rewrites and even a second writer taking over the job the script landed at the Ladd Company where it finally was made into the Blade Runner we know today. If your interested in the difficult history of Blade Runner, read Paul M. Sammon’s Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner, it gives an accurate picture of the cutthroat world of the movie business in Hollywood.

Blade Runner - Zhora - topless nude boobs

As for Blade Runner itself, is it still relevant? It think so.. One of the challenges of today is the ongoing encroachment of Artificial Intelligence, and it is not the fear that one day they would either take over the world or that we would become so feeble for relying on them, but that without knowing how or seeing the moral dangers that we will create artificial beings that have true feelings, emotions and even a soul while treating them as disposable machines with a ’4-year lifespan’. To me that has always been the true message of Blade Runner, the message that was executed so deftly with realistic sci-fi instead of ray guns and unrealistic utopian worlds.

Blade Runner - Eyes, just eyes!

Now I can only hope that the rumored sequel to Blade Runner will either keep that message or create a new one just as good.

After four episodes where Continuum has managed to assert itself as the thrilling, clever sci-fi show that it is we now have the first episode, entitled ‘A Test Of Time’, in which its boundaries are explored. One of the earliest questions raised about the concept behind Continuum was the so-called ‘Time Paradox’ or grandfather paradox. What happens if you travel back in time and kill your grandfather? Do you see to exist as well?

This episode as did the previous two with a scene in 2077, Kiera is after Liber8 but only belatedly recognises that their next terrorist target is SadTech, where her husband works. The subsequent explosion of the building leaves it unclear if he has been killed or not.

Next the story moves back 2012, Kagame is asserting himself once again over Liber8 and decides to test the time-paradox by killing the grandmother of Kiera. The only problem is there are nine woman known as Lilly Jones in Vancouver and he doesn’t know which one is the correct one. So in true terminator style he sends Travis to kill them one by one. Keira meanwhile one woman of being her grandmother, this girl is intelligent and successful. It comes as a surprise then when she uncover her true grandmother to be a dropout junkie who is pregnant with her mother. This ‘real’ Lilly Jones has not intention of keeping the child and it is up to Kiera to convince her otherwise less she would be erased from history.

Meanwhile Kagame is putting the squeeze on Kellog after he find out he was betrayed by Kellog, by abducting Kellog’s grandmother and threatening to kill her he hopes to make a trade. Kellog has other plans and instead kidnaps Kagame’s pregnant mother. Kagame admits defeat and releases Kellog’s grandmother, but she is shot by Travis who was lurking nearby with a sniper rifle. Kagame is enraged at Travis because he gave his word to Kellog, but otherwise does nothing. After kellog’s grandmother dies there is surprise with both Kiera and Kellog about the fat that he hasn’t disappeared. This seems to undermine Kagame’s theory of time-paradox and clear Kiera of one direct threat.

As part of a deal between Kellog and Kiera he will make sure that Kiera’s mother is whisked away safely and secure.

A side-plot involves a young Alec Sadler having to deal with his stepbrother, but this isn’t very exciting at it doesn’t get very tense.

Review…

Now, I have merely given out a plot outline, this episode is certainly still very fresh if you want to watch it. The thoughts about time travel in this episode proofs this show can be clever if it wants to be. The storyline between Kiera and he grandmother were a bit too dramatic for my taste and they slowed this episode down too much.

Score; 8.5 / 10.

Judge Dredd Poster - Karl UrbanI have never read a Judge Dredd comic in my life, and though I am aware of 2000 AD I have never read one of those either, and after the rather dreadful 1995 Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone I really had  no inclination doing so, ever…. However, when Karl Urban and Lean Headey decided to star in this remake the movie at least caught my attention but for the most part I was simply waiting for the inevitable reviews that would tell me whether the movie was worth watching. That leaves the summer of 2012 in an odd state when it comes to sci-fi blockbusters. Prometheus was a standalone in the Alien series that nobody seems to get though The Next Generation episode that it is based on is one of my favorites. Total Recall gets an unnecessary remake that seems bound to flop and now Judge Dredd is coming this September in what looks like a movie that may work because it doesn’t aim too high, and yet could all to easily flop because no one really cares. In order to give Judge Dredd the benefit of the doubt I am here to tell you that you should definitely see the trailer below, because it seems that the director of this flick is at least trying to get something good on the screen. I hope you enjoy the stills too.

The reboot of the franchise is known as Dredd and will hit the screen on September 21st.

As for the official synopsis…
The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and director Pete Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film. Filmed in 3D with stunning slow motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Continuum - Garza

The next episode of Continuum starring Rachel Nichols is entitled A Test Of Time and will air on June 24th. The last episode of Continuum was quite good but ratings have been in steady decline since the shows pilot and I dare say it is already in the danger zone.

Here is the promo video for …A Test of Time’…

Here is the synopsis…

Kagame’s return begins with a reset of Liber8’s agenda, away from violence and towards blending into the community and fostering their revolution through co-opting existing structures. But they have a vulnerability - the possibility that if their ancestors, living in this time, are murdered, they might cease to exist. A test of this theory is devised and Kiera and her grandmother are the guinea pigs.

The Assassination Game

After less than a week to go until its supposed June 26th release date publishers Simon & Schuster have finally revealed the cover of the fourth installment in The Starfleet Academy young adult novel series. Book 4 is entitled The Assassination game and is written by Alan Gratz. So far, I have reviewed all earlier novels in the series and I must say I am looking forward to this one. And even though the plots seems to have elements from the 1980′s movie Gotcha it also seems that series will continue its often bleak view of reality.

The cover itself is OK I think, it seems to continue the style of the earlier covers while also adopting IDW’s retro look they use for their comics. The third character besides Kirk and Uhura is of course Hikaru Sulu (played by George Takei in TOS and by John Cho in the Star Trek Reboot), as far as I recall his character was not yet introduced in Starfleet Academy series. In the previous novel, The Gemini Agent, we were introduced to Pavel Chekov who was certainly the best character in an otherwise lackluster novel.

Here is the synopsis of The Assassination Game…

The rules are simple: Draw a target. Track him down and “kill” him with a spork. Take your victim’s target for your own. Oh, and make sure the player with your name doesn’t get to you first. No safe zones. No time-outs. The game ends when only one player remains. James T. Kirk is playing for fun. Leonard “Bones” McCoy is playing to get closer to a girl. But when a series of terrorist attacks rock the usually placid Starfleet Academy campus, it becomes clear that somebody is playing the game for real. Is it one of the visiting Varkolak, on Earth to attend an intergalactic medical conference? Or could it be a member of a super-secret society at the Academy dedicated to taking care of threats to the Federation, no matter what rules they have to break to do it? Find out in The Assassination Game, the fourth installment in Spotlight’s exciting series for teens.

See you back on SciFiEmpire.net for the review of The Assassination Game.

Continuum’s fourth episode is entitled ‘Matter of Time’ and is in my opinion on par with the quality experienced from the first episode. This episode also sees the return of Tony Amendola as Edouard Kagame, the leader of terrorist group Liber8.

As for the plot of ‘Matter of Time’…

The episode opens with a flash forward to the 2077 time period, Kiera’s husband Greg has just gotten promoted when a terrorist attack takes out the city power supply, boasting that it isn’t a problem he slowly counts down from 10 after which the power is restored, Greg states that to counter Liber8 he was put in charge of decentralizing power supply.

The next scene jumps back to 2012, Kiera is trying to do her make-up as she wants to blend in as much as possible, Alec is watching her through Kiera’s implants while noting down all the technology Kiera says exist in the future. Just as in 2077 the power goes out just as Kiera is trying her eye-liner, Carlos calls her saying there is a situation in a laboratory that is just her thing. A brief scene inserted here shows Kellog getting rich on betting the stock market. At the laboratory it transpires that a professor Ames has died in a freak accident while making anti-matter, Kiera isn’t so sure and believes he was murdered.

Continuum - Mayko Nguyen as Melissa Dobek

Meanwhile Edouard Kagame, the leader of Liber8, has finally emerged from his time travel ordeal and while unconscious is taken to the hospital. Kiera and Alec continue their discussion of the future and Alec promises her he will try to repair her suit with some notes that his father has left him. This is the first sign of the origin of Alec’s equipment that he uses in his barn. Kellog continues to make an impression on this timeline by buying his grandmother’s home and solving all of her debts. Carlos and Kiera meanwhile question the rather arrogant Shane about what he knows on Callisto, the Anti-matter device that Ames was working on. The man shows little sympathy for the professor’s death as he thinks Ames was about to sell his research to the military to create weapons. Shane does show surprise though when he finds out that the back-up database with all the research has been deleted.

Members of Liber8 continue their rampage through Vancouver, after they assaulted two bikers they managed to get a new hide-out in a marijuana lab. The female members of Liber8, Garza and Sonya, show of their vicious side by seeming to enjoy murder.

Carlos and Kiera search out everybody who may have a motive to murder professor Ames, after questioning a Luddite group they suspect Ames’s former partner Melissa Dobek (Mayko Nguyen), she confirms that they had a row some time back because she was sure that his research would kill somebody one day but is adamant about her own innocence. While all of this is going Carlos questions Kiera about her uncanny ability to recognise exact length en be so knowledgable in science.

Kagame meanwhile walks out of the hospital, which finally alerts the authorities that he is in Vancouver, Kiera of course has not mentioned he is from the future and the police think he is the gang leader who came over from Portland. When Carlos and Kiera have made their way back to the police station they are confronted by a member of JAG who tells them to stop their inquiries into the death of Ames. Carlos and Kiera intend to disobey their orders by doing so anyway. Kiera does feel a little bit of unease as Carlos seems to want to catch the killer out of a sense of enjoyment in the hunt.

Liber8 has found out that their leader has arrived through the time portal and is set out to look for him. Kiera and Carlos once more question Melissa Dobek and confront her with her relationship with Shane, which she comments on as saying it isn’t illegal. Though Dobek is forced to admit that she is also engaged to be married. Kiera also questions her about the fact that Ames got all the patents when their partnership was broken up. Carlos’s boss questions him about his continued search but Carlos states that it is unrelated to Ames’s murder.

Carlos and Kiera once again interrogate Shane, this time he admits to murdering Professor Ames but denies Melissa Dobek had anything to do with it. This causes Carlos to ask him why he is willing to ‘fall on his light saber’ for her, but Shane doesn’t answer.

Melissa is confronted by Shane’s confession but won’t budge about her own involvement, her fiancé is meanwhile introduced as Drew LaRouge and Kiera understands that she will become Melissa LaRouge and decides to let her go so as to not change history. Alec chides her for it and Kiera knows she will be often confronted by people from the future having a dark past. Kagame meanwhile is found by Liber8 after Kiera has first managed to catch up to him. Later she is visited by Alec and they meet face to face for the first time.

Review…

This episode is about as good as the pilot mainly because of its very tight writing. Almost all characters take part in significant events while some of Continuum’s downsides are also addressed. Alec is now being portrayed as more mature and Carlos finally seems to understand that Kiera isn’t what she seems. I hope that Carlos will manage to figure it out soon because the present situation will only work for a few more episodes before it becomes a drag. The return of Kagame will also make sure that Liber8 will become even more important in the coming episodes.

Score; 8.5 / 10.
