Continuum - Fast Times - Rachel Nichols as Kiera Cameron

Sunday the second episode of Continuum will air, and from what I have seen of the trailer (see below) and the synopsis is that this series is not planning on settling in and churning out 24-episode seasons for seven years but st instead seems hellbent on twisting and turning with the concept of time-travel. I just like it when some creative producer decides to screw with everybody’s heads. Well if that isn’t a ringing endorsement to go see the second episode then I don’t know what is. So go see it Sunday!!!.

Here is the synopsis…

Kiera tries to find the members of Liber8 before they do more damage.   Her attempts are hindered when her cover is blown and her partner on the VPD, Carlos Fonnegra, arrests her.  But when she discovers Liber8’s plan to attempt to get back to 2077, she has to escape and possibly ally herself with her sworn enemies to get back home.

Finally the full trailer for the Total Recall remake has arrived, after the small video clips that have been released so far you would almost think the producers don’t want us to see the flick at all. I will say this fo the trailer, it will sure as hell draw me to the movie.

The movie will be released August 8th.

Continuum TV-series

Continuum continues where shows like Stargate, Fringe, The X-files, Sliders, Alcatraz and Total Recall 2070 went before it with principal filming being done in Vancouver, unlike the other shows it is also set in Vancouver, both in the year 2077 and in 2012. Continuum has however kind of slipped under the radar. Even though I first heard of it last summer I had totally forgotten about it until the day it aired. That said it was only aired in Canada, the rest of us will have to wait a bit. After a spectacular year in which four new sci-fi shows aired (Alphas, Person of Interest, Alcatraz and Terra Nova) we are blessed with a fifth which I believe has more staying power than all but one in the previous list of shows.

Continuum - Rachel Nichols as Kiera Cameron

So what is Continuum all about…

The story begins in 2077 when all governments have been bailed out by corporations, people seem happy though it is a little bit totalitarian, but from what I have seen not unusually so even by our standards. Nonetheless a number of liberal/terrorists have plotted to kill the heads of all corporations in order to start a revolution. They actually succeed but also kill some 30.000 people at the same time. The head of the terrorist group, Edouard Kagame (played by Tony Amendola who played Bra’tac in Stargate), quietly allows himself to be taken prisoner after giving a rousing speech. The arrest is made by Inspector Kiera Cameron (played by Rachel Nichols) who is the main protagonist in the series. We learn she is married and has a kid, in that regards the show tries to introduce drama and it works well though it feels a little forced. Kiera’s husband and friends discuss the terrorist attack and its background thus giving the viewer more background information into the story (this shows tries to be brainy as well). One mysterious character does show up and that is Alec Sadler (played by William B. Davis, Smoking man from The X-files) who is one of the surviving corporate leaders and seems to be behind the major plot developments in the pilot. The year 2077 is mostly shown in a visual futuristic way seems like an update of Cyberpunk, it is more Minority Report with pink billboards than Blade Runner.

Continuum - Tony Amendola as Kagame

The series then jumps six months into the future, Kagame and the other terrorist have been sentenced to death and the inspector responsible for the execution is Kiera Cameron. However the execution goes wrong and the unusual machine that was supposed kill them actually sends them back in time. Kagame is missing and Kiera learns from one of the other terrorist named Lucas that they have a plan for this time period. While Kiera is getting her bearings in Vancouver 2012 she suddenly hears a voice in her head, something not unusual in 2077 but it is in 2012. She finds out that a young Alec Sadler invented the technology that allows implant speech. After overhearing that she is from the future Alec is resolved to helping her, a subplot reveals that his step-father may be a nutcase anti-government terrorist himself, something for later I suppose.

Continuum - Erik Knudsen as a Young Alec Sadler

Kiera quickly manages to blend into city life in Vancouver 2012 but not after some hilarious ‘adjustment’ problems which instantly gave this show credibility over other shows such as Alcatraz and Terra Nova. Despite the pilot episode being just 43 minutes long it manages to pack some serious plot development. After Keira has managed to adjust to 2012 life she teams up with detective Carlos Fonnegra by pretending to be from the gang task force of Portland, Oregon. Fonnegra has been assigned to investigate the strange happenings in Vancouver which we know have been perpetrated by the escaped terrorist. The plot briefly follows their rampage through Vancouver and it really show they are mindless, bloodthirsty terrorist not unlike the prisoners from Alcatraz.

Continuum - Victor Webster as Carlos Fonnegra

Kiera Cameron and Carlos Fonnegra manage to take down a few of the terrorist but this is revealed as a diversion of the real attack on the police station where Carlos works. The attack secures the freedom of Lucas who is the terrorist’s expert on time travel. Meanwhile the young Alec Sadler uncovers more about his future self but Kiera tries to hide this from him in order not to harm him, Alec believes this reason because he doesn’t want to know his ‘bad’ future. The episode wraps up between the partnership of Kiera and Carlos in hunting down the terrorists and Kiera and Alec in their explanation on the time travel thing. I do sense that like Peter Bishop the character of Carlos Fonnegra is there mostly to legitimize the appearance of the rather attractive female lead on the show, I can’t say I really cared much for his character in the pilot. The relationship between Kiera and Carlos also seems like a reverse Lois Lane Clark Kent thingy with Carlos never finding out she is from the future.

Continuum - William B. Davis as Alec Sadler

Review.

My feelings after seeing this episode are generally positive, most of the down sides can be explained by the jamming of the plot development into one episode and so far I haven’t seen any of the major downsides that I saw in Alcatraz and Terra Nova, I hope this show isn’t going to turn into a ‘Terrorist of the week’ show like Alcatraz was a ‘Prisoner of the week’ show, I  also hope this show won’t be like Bionic Woman either because the suit that Kiera wears might be very sexy and tight it also packs a number of ‘rabbits’ she can pull out of the hat at any time. The show seems a little bit like Nikita in style, not in the least because another attractive woman is seen in the lead which after Fringe and Alcatraz seems like necessary part of the formula. Just like Fringe the show attempts drama so that is a plus. I also hope that Vancouver 2077 will remain an integral part of the series, when the time machine was about to be activated we saw Kiera’s husband arguing with the older Alec Sadler and so it would be fun if he would follow his own investigations, that would give this series a real Total Recall 2070 feel that fans of the show have craved for over a decade now. It will also make use of those other cameo’s actors that appeared in the pilot.

Score; 8 / 10. Still some growing pains before this show will really hit.

Viewer rating; 0.9 million (that is just in Canada).

A couple of months ago I updated on the coming release of the fourth Starship Troopers movie that is scheduled to be released this summer. Since then things have been quiet on this front and not surprising as it appears to be a direct to DVD for this movie, not unlike the second and third movies. Hopefully this CGI version of Starship Troopers will be better, certainly the trailer seems to catch the theme well enough.

Here is the synopsis one more time…

A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth. Carl Jenkins, now ministry of Paranormal Warfare, takes the starship on a clandestine mission before its rendezvous with the Alesia and goes missing in the nebula. Now, the battle-hardened troopers are charged with a rescue mission that may lead to a much more sinister consequence than they ever could have imagined.

On august 8th the Total Recall remake will hit the cinema starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale.

Here is the official synopsis for all those who keep forgetting the rather thin plot…

Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life—real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police—controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world—Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Here below is small clip already used, mostly its stuff already seen in the trailer but there is one exciting homage to the Paul Verhoefen original, can you spot it?

Person of Interest - Michael Emerson as Harold Finch

Finally after 23 episodes has the incredible first season of Person of Interest come to a finish, next to series like Nikita and The Walking Dead there is no series like it and it certainly is the best new series of this moment. This show fantastic because just like series such as 24 and Nikita it is able to deliver high quality production along with daring plot development, the shows creators are certainly not afraid to pull some punches. Jim Caviezel’s Reese and Michael Emerson’s Finch instantly captivated audiences by their likability while their coöperation is entertaining because of their opposing personalities.

Person of Interest - Amy Acker as Root

As for the plot so far, well, Finch and his partner Nathan Ingram created an artificial intelligence to watch every digital communication for the NSA, while the NSA is only interested in terrorist Finch was also interested in the threats ordinary people faced. After his partners death he enlists the help of Reese to rescue people that are threatened.

Person of Interest - Corrupt Cops

As for the plot of this episode…

Reese becomes trapped with his POI in a heavily monitored part of the city and must rely on Finch, Carter and Fusco’s help. Reese is set the task of protecting the latest victim, psychologist Caroline Turing (Amy Acker) who is unknowingly treating the person who has hired HR to kill her. Finch brings in Zoe Morgan to help find the suspect while Reese protects Turing. After stopping the first attack, Reese takes Turing to a hotel but are found by not only HR but the FBI, who are hunting for Reese.

person of Interest - Elizabeth Marvel as Alicia Corwin

Carter suspects Fusco is working for HR but learns he is working with Reese as well. Alicia Corwin, who has been following Finch, interrogates him but is killed by Turing. She reveals herself as “Root” and Finch realizes that she was the one who hired HR. She forces Finch to drive off. Reese finds Alicia’s dead body, while Carter and Fusco anonymously reveal HR members to the FBI. Reese discovers Finch is missing and talks to the machine, a public phone call rings and Reese picks up the phone as the episode ends.

Person of Interest - Jim Caviezel as Reese

Review..

As I said before this show just keep on reinventing itself, that is also true for this episode which is very tightly written (almost like 24). The return of ‘Root’ caught me off guard and strangely has led me to believe she may be working with Elias. The fact that Carter and Fusco now know of each other is something of a blessing because it was turning into something like a running gag, the only slight i have with POI at this moment is the FBI agent names Donnelly, he replaced Carter with chasing after Reese and just like Carter the whole reminds me too much of the colonel Lynch/Decker thing from the A-team. Here is hoping POI will overcome these slights for its second season which I expect would air in September. It certainly has proved what quality TV means compared to canceled shows like Alcatraz which had potential but was ultimately doomed by sloppy execution.

Score; 9.5 / 10.

Total Recall - Colin Farrell

Thanks to Sony Pictures we can enjoy 7 new stills from Len Wiseman’s adoption of Total Recall, the movie stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel. So far the buzz surrounding this movie has been low, not helped by the action packed trailer which gave the impression that a Philip K. Dick’s original story was once again abused for its title only. The movie is scheduled for an august 3 release date!

Blue Remembered Earth - Alastair Reynolds

Blue Remembered Earth - Alastair Reynolds

Alastair Reynolds’ latest sci-fi novel is entitled ’Blue Remembered Earth’, it was released earlier this year and here is the full review. The novel is the first in a planned trilogy called ‘Poseidon’s Children’ and as such it suffers from the fact that it tries too hard to be both epic and the necessity that certain plot points can’t be fully developed yet.

The author Alastair Reynolds first rose to fame with his Revelation Space novels first released in 2000, the standalone sequel Chasm City still occupies a warm spot in my heart. Over the following years we have seen more sequels which didn’t live up to the original but we ave also seen more standalone novels such as Century Rain and the recent Terminal World which saw the author try his hand at the Steampunk genre (and did so excellently). Due to his success it was reported that Reynolds got a big contract to write ten more novels which sounded too me a little like he was going to write pulp fiction and not the hard-sci-fi we come to admire. His latest novel Blue Remembered Earth may be a victim of that change.

Blue Remembered Earth…

The story takes place roughly in the year 2160, during which technology has of course advanced further but perhaps not as considerably as could be expected. The story follows Geoffrey and Sunday Akinya, two siblings belonging to a powerful family that has vast interests in space exploration. The families legacy was built by Eunice Akinya, their grandmother, who exiled herself to a space station. Her death sparks a search for answers to her ‘big secret’ by following the bread crumbs she left behind. The last revelation is that she didn’t die at all but instead traveled on board an alien ship she found just before her exile, leaving a digital proxy to deal with her family, a deception that only worked with the cooperation of the families friend Memphis. Eunice tasks her family members to prepare humanity for the stars by following her lead. Here the story ends…

Review…

I have only briefly described the plot so as not spoiler too much, but I have to say that the end was already clear early on and that most parts of the story were a bit of drag on the pacing. Too many characters and scenario’s conform to the Cyberpunk genre and several side plots seemed merely to exist so the author can forcefully explain his vision for the future, these divergences mostly distract though they might be hints for the sequels. The book seems to suffer from the fact the author is trying to make three novel space opera, somehow I doubt it that was his goal when he wrote Revelation Space. The author may have given himself too much freedom to develop the plot and as such it feels a bit thin at times. Here is hoping that the sequels will be different. Expect the second novel to be released in early 2013.

Score; 7.5 /10.

Conclusion; one of the weakest Alastair Reynolds novels to date.

Another Prometheus viral video is making the rounds before the movies early June release. These viral shots are almost becoming as famous the movie itself. This promo shot features Noomi Rapace (swedish version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) calling Weyland for reinforcement. It is eerily moving as it sort of gives the feeling that Weyland knew what was going to happened.
