Guy-Pearce-as-Peter-Weyland-Prometheus-slice

Everyone familiar with the Alien franchise will know the name Weyland-Yutani, it is the name of the powerful conglomerate that in one form or another is an important part of the franchises back story. Now as a tie in to the upcoming Prometheus we get a viral-ad featuring Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland.

Here is the description that goes with it.

Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.

Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.

Conceived and designed by Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof and directed by Luke Scott.

All Ridley Scott needs to do now is deliver with Prometheus, certainly no pressure there.

Guy Pearce will later this year also make an appearance in the low-budget scifi movie ‘LockDown’, or ‘Maximum Security One’ if the renaming holds.

Well, Vin Diesel has done it again, he has updated his facebook page with another picture from the set of the third Riddick movie. It is an interesting and effective way to keep the buzz about the movie going.

Fringe - Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv)

Fringe has been much in the news lately, rumors are plenty about it getting canceled after this season but many more allude to a shortened fifth season that will follow. If the producers continue than the show will get the magic number of 100 that is the usual benchmark for syndication. So far season 4 has been a mixed bag, with episodes being notably dumbed down as to not alienate audiences. The ratings seem to have leveled off at 3 million though this show has always been stronger with TiVo users.

As for this episode, ‘The End of all things’ is intended to give closure to events that have happened so far in season 4 and act as a jump off point to the finale…

Fringe - Box with Lights

As for the plot…

Olivia has been taken to a disused medical facility by David Robert Jones and his agents. She is placed in the same room along with Nina Sharp, also secured to a chair, revealing she was also abducted by Jones the night before. Jones arrives and asserts that Olivia has great abilities due to her Cortexiphan doping but must coax them out of Olivia. Jones presents a light box test (“Ability”) that Olivia should be able to activate with her mind, torturing Nina to create the emotional driver, but Olivia admits she can’t do it without rest. During this period, Olivia, her memories a mix of her own and that of Olivia from Peter’s timeline, asks Nina to help her make an emotional connection, but she recognizes that this Nina is not the real one. Olivia continues to play along, explaining to Nina that her Cortexiphan abilities could only be induced by being near Peter; Nina fakes illness to be extracted from the room, where she explains that they need to abduct Peter.

Fringe - Observer - September

Following Olivia’s disappearance, Peter Bishop discovers a surveillance camera in her apartment. He takes its memory device, which has been overwritten numerous times like a palimpsest, to Walter’s laboratory, using forensic tools to examine previous images on the disc. Lincoln and Broyles take Nina into custody, learning that someone with Nina’s biometric signature had accessed the Massive Dynamic supply of Cortexiphan over the last few months; Nina is surprised by this but refuses to talk. As they work, Walter accuses Peter of taking advantage of Olivia’s state, even if unintentionally, imprinting his memories of Olivia of the original timeline onto her. They identify a face belonging to Leland Spivey, a man with ties to Jones and Nina Sharp, and Peter suspects that they are dosing Olivia with Cortexiphan for nefarious purposes. Their work is disrupted by the sudden appearance of the Observer September, bleeding from a chest wound.

Fringe - Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop

With the Observer nearly dead, Peter decides to use Walter’s equipment to enter the Observer’s mind to try to learn of Olivia’s location. Within September’s consciousness, Peter learns the Observers are a team of scientists from one possible future of humanity, having used technology to travel to the past to witness their own creation. September, however, disrupted events by attempting to observe the point where Peter’s cure was discovered (“Peter”), and his disruption has since caused several unintended changes within the timeline since, including the war between the two universes. Ultimately, this would lead to the birth of Henry, Peter’s child with the parallel universe’s Olivia, which September claimed never should have happened and a catalyst for disruption of future events. By Peter entering the Machine and altering the timeline, Henry also ceased to exist. September explains that Peter’s reappearance may be a means to set things right, and insists he find a way to reunite his romance with his original Olivia. As the reality of September’s mind breaks down, claiming “they are coming”, the Observer tells Peter to “go home”. Peter is suddenly woken up in the lab, September’s body goes into convulsions and vanishes.

Fringe - David Robert Jones

Peter realizes that September’s message was literal, and returns to his home, where he is knocked out by Jones’ men. He is brought to the same facility as Olivia and tied up. As they prepare to torture him, Olivia begins to use her powers to activate the lights, not only on the box but within the facility, creating electrical sparks that kills one of Jones’ men. As Jones and Nina retreat, Olivia frees Peter and they give chase, though Olivia suffers from intense pain from excessive use of her powers. They catch up to Jones and Nina as they are crossing back to the parallel universe, and even though Olivia fires a bullet through Jones’ neck, he is only momentarily stunned, a side effect of his earlier teleportation. Jones and Nina escape in the confusion.

Peter contacts the authorities to bring medical help for Olivia. As they are waiting, Peter admits to Olivia that he fears what he has done to her memories, and has seen his original Olivia through the Observer’s memory. He leaves her, believing that staying away from Olivia would be for the best.

Fringe - Anna Torv as Olivia

Conclusion…

This episode was very clever, it was tightly written with plot developments following logically from one another and yet there was also tension… the deadly seriousness of David Robert Jones and the unfolding drama between Olivia and Peter made this episode feel so much more intense. it’s a shame that not more Fringe episodes were like this, I think we need to go back to season 3 to find the last one (the finale).

The fact that the Nina that was held with Olivia was a changeling must have quickly occurred to viewers and yet the episode this press this matter beyonf the realm were it was impossible for Olivia to know this fact as well.

As like last week the tension between Walter and Peter is again rising with Walter becoming increasingly more assertive. Almost all the characters on Fringe have been undergoing somekind of transformation.

The episode is also noteworthy in that it doesn’t rely large action scenes to convey excitement, it is in fact a very humble episode that feels a lot like how the X-files was during its first 5 season.

Score; 9 / 10.

Viewer rating; 3.1 million. This is slight bump over last week, please visit ScifiEmpire.net on the latest news concerning Fringe’s continuation.

It never rains but it pours…. After yesterdays surprise set pictures we suddenly have 6 more pictures from three different sources. More exciting, in one picture we can see a IMAX camera which means that at least part of the movie is being filmed in this format. The scenes that are depicted in these pictures are much the same as yesterday and seem to have been made at around the same time.

Over on Trekmovie.com there is already a lively discussion about what these pictures show, though the fact that Zoe Saldana shoots Cumberbatch’s character is very spoilerish. I personally can’t wait until May 2013.

It was bound to happen soon, first Simon Pegg celebrated his birthday with video that offered a glimpse of the Star Trek 2 set a couple of days ago and now MTV has uncovered two set pictures.

The first picture below shows Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) in his role as the main antagonist, sadly I found the pic a bit spoilerisch. The other person (with the pointy ears) is Zachary Quinto reprising his role as Spock.

The second picture below shows Zoe Saldana as Uhura holding a phaser. I’m glad they are keeping to the original uniform.

As for the first picture, does it show Cumberbatch’s character with pointy ears? Who can say, Star Trek 2 (or 12) is set for release on May 13 2013.

Battleship - Peter Berg

Peter Berg’s Battleship starring Rihanna is one of two movies that has everybody guessing just how much it will bomb at the box office this year, the other being John Carter (from the John Carter of Mars franchise). Both movies have recieved little attention on this website and it has been suggested on various websites that neither movies has generated much awareness among the public. Sounds like box office fodder to me.

Well anyway, we still have a new trailer for Battleship. It’s the international trailer that not only shows Rihanna’s eyeliner in much more detail but it also has aliens!

Well, after seeing the new trailer my earlier judgment still stands, it’s going to be utter crap.

Alcatraz - Johnny McKee - Jack Sylvane

Even though the last episode of Alcatraz aired on Monday I haven’t gotten round to writing a review yet, mainly because the episode was kind-off boring. It was so far the worst episode in the series and it was a definite step down from last weeks excellent episode. That said, ‘Johnny McKee’ has its moments. Strangely enough the moments of brilliance are closely related with the moments when I just stopped caring.

Alcatraz - Warden James and Doctor Sangupta

I’ll give an example; the main antagonist Johnny McKee is like almost all previous inmates a serious OCD candidate, he is brilliant but flawed, choosing to see the world in a strange black and white that he himself has helped creating. After his character has been established we see him go on a killing spree that not only contradicts with what Doctor Sangupta has tried to do for him but they also disagree with his raison d’etre (reason of existence) and that is to take revenge for a woman who has scorned him. Later on it is revealed that he was the one who had burned the woman with acid and that his revenge spree is thus pointless as he is punishing the wrong people. This contradiction makes this episode rather boring as it feels pointless.

Alcatraz - Nikki

Meanwhile some scenes between Nikki and Soto are great and the scenes set in 1963 are as always just fantastic. That Alcatraz has landed in troubled waters with ratings below 6 million has been on the internet for a few weeks, and it is too late to make alterations to season 1 as they are already filming the last episode so we just have to hope that the rest of the seasons episode are better and at least try to fix some of Alcatraz’s chronic problems.

Chronic Problem #1; how to mix a studio’s desire for a formalistic/procedural mystery show with a story that really requires episodes that are asymmetric (like lost)

Score; 7 / 10.

Now that we have talked about Johnny McKee we can at least pretend to be optimists and take a look at Clarence Montgomery which will air next Monday.

Tron Uprising

This summer a CGI/animation series set in the Tron Universe will air on Disney XD. The series timeline is set between that of the two movies and will most likely deal with the ‘Uprising’ (duhhh) that was alluded to in Tron Legacy.

The main character is called Beck and will be voiced by Elijah Wood.

Here is the official synopsis…

Beck is a young program who becomes the skillful leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu 2 and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron – the greatest warrior the Grid has ever come to know. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting and light cycle skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but he will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful, strong leader. Destined to become the next Tron of the system, Beck adopts Tron’s persona and becomes the archenemy of General Tesler and his oppressive forces

Other actors lending their voice are Bruce Boxleitner as Tron, Lance Henrikson as General Tesler and Mandy Moore as Mara.

Back during comic-con 2011 we saw a preview video containing artwork stills and yesterday HeroComplex did an in-depth with the developers and showed the first in-series still.

Here is the still…

I am looking forward to this one as Star Wars The Clone Wars has so far been a mixed bag, I do hope this series will try to remain serious about the source material and not just cater to the young.

Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv)

So far season 4 of Fringe hasn’t been all that captivating. It has been OK in a time when just being OK isn’t really good enough. Last weeks ratings of Fringe once again dipped under the three million mark with a viewer rating of 2.99 million.

This weeks episode of Fringe is entitled ’The end of all things’ and is focused on the mythology. In some respects I am becoming rather tired with the mythology, it isn’t as captivating as it once was, the mystery is kind of gone.

Well, lets give this episode at least the benefit of the doubt.

Here is the press release…

Alcatraz - Johnny McKee

Last weeks episode of Alcatraz, ‘Paxton Petty’, was a huge improvement over the previous hit-and-miss episodes. It was still a little formalistic but it combined a very dark story with broad character development. It is a shame that over the last few weeks the series has started to take a nose-dive in the ratings. I guess viewers aren’t as forgiving of the unpolished nature of Alcatraz.

This weeks episode is entitled ’Johnny McKee’ and deals with a poisoner, a rather unusual kind of murderer. Like many other inmates that have returned he is a complete psychopath (and I though Petty was bad) and that strangely is the most polished aspect of this show as so far to the last one they have given me the creeps.

I hope the creative staff keep working on polishing those deficiencies of Alcatraz, all I can advice is that more Chief Warden James and Lucille Banerjee is never a bad idea.
